THANK YOU ! I had emailed Dyson to inquire about cleaning that filter, and out of many answers, NOBODY told me the filter cannot be cleaned. ALL of their responses were about the foam filter at the top. Not one mention of this bottom filter. Are they just stupid, or what?

Neglectful, for sure. For the DC15, they mention you should, "...clean both filters at least once every 6 months. You can find filter maintenance instructions in the machine's user guide." But they don't show the post motor filter ANYWHERE and they don't seem to offer either filter for purchase. I just ordered a generic replacement from Amazon--hoping for the best.

I checked on that and Dyson says that only the pre-filter (the one on top) is rinsable-- NOT the HEPA post-filter. I also checked with another vacuum repair center and they state that most HEPA filters are non-rinsable unless they specifically say so on the filter. This video is probably bad information based on a set of two filters that says "washable" in the title, but only means that the top one is washable (the foam one) and NOT the post-filter.

I just watched this, and I had a question. I've got an old DC15, and when I went to open my Post Motor Filter, I realized that it was all one piece. There was no separation between the filter and mounting plate. When I went shopping on Amazon, the Dyson part is Dyson Part 908561-02, and you'll see that it comes all as a single piece. I'd honestly prefer the washable post motor filter, do you have any modification to do a swap out for this?

Same question again on DC15 !! I am trying to get this bottom filter out and after moving the bottom hose out from the back of the filter, have popped the clip, but the front two clips wont release the filter, and I feel any more pressure would break the unit !!
@RetroPillowcase

@@honeybadger2732 here’s what I had to do. You need to totally remove the hose. Unclip it from the neck. Let it come down to the floor. To behind the vacuum. Place the whole hose downward. It may detach from the vacuum once it is flipped down . That’s ok. Get flat head screwdriver, very thin tip. Along the wall of the filter body un clip the back clip. For the front clips you will need to firmly get the head of the screwdriver between the wall of the grey body and the clip u shape. Press the wall in. You may need to have one hand pulling the back freed clip up at the same time. Don’t worry about pushing the teeth in from horizontal area. It does nothing. It was very hard. I had to fight my dyson. I found replacements on Amazon for about $15 each. On Amazon search this 910471-02 And fdit dc15 dyson

My DC07 does not have three clips on the HEPA filter cover. It has just one at the front and it seems to be impossible to remove without breaking it. And if it's a "life time" HEPA filter, why should I ever need to change it, anyway? But the exhaust gets very hot after a few minutes. The foam of the washable filter has crumbled to dust so I'll have to replace that. {:o:O:}

Much appreciated your video! I'm a woman who can do all this but well rather not but am haha. So very much appreciative how you explain everything. My question is though I have had my dyson no lie like 10yrs and never serviced it. Trying to do it myself watching your video and others. Can the washable hepa filter you gave a part number for work on a DC07 like the original big yellow guy? Do you also suggest buying new rubber band things? Mine do not seem cracked or anything but I might need a new brush bc of the use over time and hair trapping.
@gpelite6616
@gpelite6616 6 жыл бұрын
Do you mean new rubber belts? No, I wouldn't replace those if they still are good and without cracks or tears. The belts usually just fail based on tension (to save the motor on purpose). The brush bar can be a bit torn up and still be OK, but if your bristles are really beat up you could replace it; that is completely your preference. I only really replace brush bars if the bearings are making noises or restricting the turning of the bar reallllly badly. Yes the washable filter will work on the DC07 since the motor base is the same. It may be a tight fit like the DC14, but it will go in.

Hello, first I wanna say thanks for this informative video. Now I need to know do you happen to have a video of the breakdown and cleaning of the DC14? I haven't lost suction but my cyclone assembly is clingy dust and dirt ever since I began breaking it down 2-3 years ago to wash and clean the bin and cyclone. Thinking you might be doing something different or know what's causing the build up.
@gpelite6616
@gpelite6616 8 жыл бұрын
I could do a breakdown vid for this one but if you are talking about the innards collecting dirt and dust in the cyclones that is normal. The fine dirt swirls and catches on static charge and moisture on the plastic. It looks worse than it is. Dysons do not look show room new unless it's just after a cleaning, and on yellow like mine the dirt is very visible too. The outer cyclone chamber mesh part you can wipe down if it bothers you but you risk breaking things/tabs the more you take it apart than is necessary. If you have more specifics let me know and I will try to help!

Have you ever accidently used it without the top filter? that can clog the motor, I've repaired some where the motor was running fine but air flow was zero because the fins were clogged and all I was doing was spinning the dirt around (fire hazard). other things to check are for coins, toys, string wads, rocks, anything sitting in a tube or hose. Make sure your belts turn and brush bar is moving. Simple deduction and ruling out every part gets you to a solution. With older Dysons it's so easy, just take your time. The worst case scenario is you have a clogged motor and need to open the metal motor shell itself and pull out the debris by hand or tweezers from the sharp fins. Document everything as you take it apart and take pictures when you can it'll make reassembly much easier.

@@davidgreaves6560 THANK YOU! You have solved a decades-long mystery for us. We knew there must be a way to replace this filter, yet the component looked like it was all one piece. My husband thankfully refrained from prying it open until we read this. It's a good thing, because we didn't know about the clip in the back! You're right, it wasn't easy prying the top loose. But we did it. And boy, was it clogged! We knew the vacuum's suckability was decreasing and we knew it had to be this filter. We could find no such part on the Dyson website anywhere. In fact, the post motor filter isn't mentioned or even identified anywhere in the manual despite an FAQ saying, "We recommend that you clean both filters at least once every 6 months. You can find filter maintenance instructions in the machine's user guide." We just ordered the "Dyson DC15 The Ball Replacement Post Motor HEPA Exhaust Filter, Fits Dyson Part 908561-02, or 910471-02 by Dust Care" on Amazon (smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B000SQHD4C/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) Most reviewers say it's a perfect fit. Do you have a video that shows how to clean the hose? Or is it a non-washable part?
@gpelite6616
@gpelite6616 5 жыл бұрын
I do not have a hose cleaning video, but all Dyson hoses detach in some way and it makes it easy to replace and check for clogs. Sometimes the hose ends are difficult to transfer parts from, but detaching the hose from the main body you just need to find the release tab or button location. Sometimes they hide it up against the body of the unit, underneath by their hard "U" tubes, or in plain sight in what would normally look like aesthetics where different types of piping meet. I suggest taking off the hose and wand off as if you were using it and carefully going over the entire piping of the unit to find it. You are bound to stumble across it somewhere depending on the model in question.

How long do you boil the filters for smelling issues my dc14 animal smells like dog hair I've cleaned it out just want to clean the filters now
@gpelite6616
@gpelite6616 6 жыл бұрын
On the worst I've done them for a few minutes at a real boil. Just don't melt it, dip it in or circulate the filter with tongs under/in the hot water to not allow the heat to gather in one place too long. Smell it between cycles to see if it is where you want it. Sometimes a hint of it will still be there if there is mold or urine smell deep in it. Baking soda in the water helps sometimes as well. With mold smell, vinegar is better (mold can't grow in acidic environments). Even after that if you still smell it, I spray mine with cologne and let it dry completely. I really don't like buying new filters as you can see :) If all else fails, it probably will be new filter time.

First off, I will say I respect your video & wanting to help people upgrade to a washable HEPA & save some money. However, I found a Dyson DC33 at the side of the road last year....4 1/2 yrs old & working, but needing a new brushroll, a LOT of cleaning, & new tools & filter replacements. I chose to replace the pre-filter with genuine Dyson, but went with Crucial Vacuum & their HEPA filter. Why? Well, after 4 1/2 yrs, the Dyson filter was STILL black even after washing. Sure, as you say the HEPA filter wasn't "bad", & it still would have captured dust & done it's job....but would it still filter down to HEPA H12 levels (99.97% @ 0.03 microns) ? No!!! Go ahead, take your Dyson after a couple of years of use & regular HEPA filter washings to a vac shop that has a particle scanner for air purifiers they sell, & have them scan the Dyson while running. You'll be shocked & surprised at how well your supposed HEPA filter is REALLY doing it's job rather badly. I also own a Electrolux UltraCaptic bagless canister vacuum, & they clearly state right in the owner's manual to wash both the prefilter & washable HEPA filter every 6 months, & to replace both filters entirely after 2 years. That's basically an admission on their part that they KNOW a washable HEPA filter will lose it's efficiency & no longer filter to HEPA levels after a period of time has gone by. Interesting to note as well, all the major high-end upright & canister brands sold in vac shops (with exception of Electrolux) DO NOT use a washable HEPA filter on their vacuums. While I respect your opinion & wanting to help consumers save money, I think it's only fair they know exactly what that is going to cost them....namely degraded air quality in their home. Personally, I would much rather spend 1/2 on the Crucial Vacuum Dyson HEPA filter, replace after 2 or 3 years, & know my air is cleaner as a result.
@gpelite6616
@gpelite6616 7 жыл бұрын
I think I see what you're arguing here, and this is a common argument for any type of filter media. However this sounds like your gripe is with the entire concept of washable filters and with Dyson for even offering them. I think your comments are less with the video of using one to retrofit and more preference which is fine. You can have a personal preference and a difference of opinion, but I have found no reduction in air quality. I think you should really only be using the solid argument of saying, as with any washable filter, you will lose efficiency on s sliding scale as the filter gets older. The filter has the ability to clog faster if all debris on a molecular level is not removed completely (which is near impossible to remove). The HEPA filter and its rating rating stay intact when you wash it for the life of this filter. Finding a badly neglected DC33 roadside and a caked/possibly unwashed old filter probably means they didn't exactly follow the manufacturer's maintenance schedule it before you got your hands on it. If they destroyed the filter in this manner, there is no salvaging it. The filter still functions as designed as you are not changing the mechanics of the filter itself by washing it. Any manual stating when to replace a washable filter is more for the benefit of the motor, heat, and efficiency of motor air flow. You're also comparing 2 different brands, with competing designs, and different patents with Electrolux and Dyson. You can make some logical connections in theory but you can't compare apples to apples on recommended usage of 2 different systems. Where I can agree with you is that, yes, you will need to clean any filter more often as it ages. This is even true of the washable pre-filter on Dysons. Do you put more particles back into the air as a result of washing? No, you categorically do not change the air quality by washing a washable filter. By reusing any filter more than 1 time you get partially reduced efficiency only. I have found this to be negligible as a real issue with the washable swap. All HEPA's discolor and often after the first usage because they do your job but still continue to perform. At what capacity the HEPA performs to alter the efficiency of the exhaust flow while performing is based on too many underlying factors of usage to use a blanketed statement that washable HEPA filters are conclusively bad. If you maintain, wash regularly, and monitor the health of all filters in your vacuum they function as intended. All filters need replacing eventually but the circumstances leading them to overall failure vary from person to person and their usage. Dyson states having a discolored filter doesn't mean it is bad, it continues to work in spec far beyond signs of discoloration which shows in the first few usages. If it is easier and less of a hassle in your experience and you feel that you see the difference in efficiency with replacing the HEPA with non-washables I could see that working for some. Personally I like washing, sanitizing, or boiling filters when I do my deep cleans if the filter isn't trashed so that works for me. You have to be willing to actually wash it at regular intervals and not abuse or let the filter cake up. To each his own on whatever method the user finds best for their overall need.

Hello, I have a Dyson DC14 Overdrive and was wondering do you need to put the rubber ring at all on the bottom of filter as the one on mine at the moment has one, or not as it's a tight fit anyway?
@gpelite6616
@gpelite6616 7 жыл бұрын
Michael Gould I assume you mean on the HEPA filter? Ideally yes, it creates an air tight seal to force the air flow through the media filter. Without that foam gasket the exhaust will kick some dust back in the air which may lead to more dust settling in your home over time. You can still use the unit, just be aware of that.

@gpelite6616
@gpelite6616 7 жыл бұрын
Michael Gould well if it's a washable on a DC14 and you have to force the door a bit to close like I did in the video the foam won't do as much as the seal is really the tightness of the 2 plastic parts. if you have a generic non-dyson brand washable HEPA and the foam ubber creates a more solid seal, yes, you can remove and reapply the ring. I did so on the non washable and took my time with dots of superglue in key areas, let it dry, then a second round of dots to give it more shape. If you feel your washable is super tight, it might be overkill to do all that as it won't yield much Vs. the effort. Good way to test is if you shine a bright light on the area where you're using the vac you can usually see if dust is being shot up from the HEPA exhaust area. You can make a judgement from there before diving in. :)

Yes, but usually very hot water will be needed to get it to really get clean. I sometimes boil the filters of the worst vacs I get to save on money with fixing up refurbished units. It kills all the bacteria and helps loosen tough dirt. Just don't melt it, dip it in or circulate the filter with tongs under hot water to not allow the heat to gather in one place too long.

Dyson says that only the top, pre-filter is washable-- even on the DC33. The set does say washable, but that only refers to the top foam filter, not the bottom HEPA filter. This info comes straight from Dyson. Anyway, that filter is out of stock, anyway. Sorry. I think you gave some bad advice, here. Most HEPA filters are not washable or rinsable unless they specifically say so on the filter.

Sorry to disagree, Dyson specifically says the post motor HEPA is washable on the DC33 on the website and on the original part on their parts catalog. The one in the video is indeed designed from Dyson to washable. If you google this it was a big highlight of this model by reviewers at the time and has quite a few mentions. 3rd party versions of this filter are often are not washable as generic replacements.

After a couple years I just took mine out. As soon as I took it out the vacuum worked like new. Before after vacuuming I noticed it was really hot, so I was thinking that couldn't be good for the motor. I think this Hepa filter is a bunch of BS what the truth probably is the manufacturers add these filters as obsolescence so people that aren't aware discard there vacuums sooner and buy new units. Use common sense people is this tiny HEPA filter really helping or freshening your big room ? By vacuuming your stirring up more dust anyways.
@gpelite6616
@gpelite6616 5 жыл бұрын
The HEPA will cause more heat on the motor, you are correct and that is the nature of the beast. However, it is mainly there to remove the excessive dust not captured by the pre-filter and to keep the room dust contamination from the exhaust lower. If you have a really clean home and are not worried about smaller dust particulate you most certainly can remove it if you want. I keep mine in because I have a lot of electronics and that fine dust is just worse for those than the heat is for my vacuum's motor. If I was using my older Dysons as a garage project clean up machine I wouldn't care as much about a HEPA post filter and would consider removing it when it reaches end of its useful life.
