Great video - I saved a fortune replacing the clutch on my 15yo DC33 myself. Only mishap was that the lower of the two clutch plastic mounts snapped as I (manually) turned the screw for the first time since it left the factory. Prolonged the job by ages but managed to deal with it. The brand new brushbar belt was BLEDDY stiff to get on. Along with a wash of both filters and clearing muddy dog hair from various parts of its innards, it works as good as new again.

First - I had never heard of a TORX screw (lol), second - my screw bit set only had T20 and up so had to go get a T15, third - that screw location is NOT easy to remove or reinstall!! Awesome!!! These machines really do last. Mine is from either 2007 or 2009. (There are 2 dates on mine so it’s confusing). This vacuum has held up very well and is now a part of my pretty collection. Very happy to hear that you’re is still running strong. Make sure to replace your clutch every few years. Between 3-6 years or so. Just depends on usage. Once it no longer ray cheats like I demonstrated, that means it’s time for a new one. And brushroll ss should be replaced every 6-10 years again depending on usage. You’re welcome!! Replacing the belts is certainly harder in this vacuum than just about any other vacuum. But they last a lot longer than most vacuums which is a nice plus.

Good job on the video. Really felt wrong to stretch that big belt so far but it worked. When putting the clutch back in note that there is a thin slot around the clutch near the small belt. Get that lined up with the features on the case and it goes right in. Mine started to jam and I smelled the belt burning so I stopped and pulled it apart. The pulley spindle for the large belt seems to have, sort of, melted a bit, and had lumpy grey stuff around it. I trimmed off some of the lumps and it is operating again. Probably won't last long so I have ordered a new clutch. You made it easy for me. Thanks.

Hi Dillon, recently I trash picked a Dyson DC-07 and a DC-33 right next to each other by a dumpster in our apartments. For eight years, I have trash picked (among many other things) dozens of Bissells, Dirt Devils, Sharks, Hoovers, Eurekas, a Kenmore, and even a Riccar, but no Dysons until just recently, which I found the same day I also found a Windsor/Karcher. I hope to make one good Dyson out of two bad ones. And dealing with the clutch is part of what I have to do. Your video helps to make my salvage attempt possible. @@kevinc6763 yes! Do everything you did in reverse and put the knob on last. It should just clip on easily. If it doesn’t go on, you may have installed the clutch wrong. But that’s rare.

That’s awesome!!! I had that same issue at the end of this video. I fixed it by taking the clutch out and putting it back in again. I know that sucks but it’s something you may have to do. I put mine in at the slightest wrong angle and it messed everything up. So I’m sorry that you’re experiencing that but I hope you get it all fixed and I hope my video taught you a new skill!!

One note. When working with plastic, always turn your screws backwards slowly till you feel the threads of the screw click, then tighten just till stop, then only 1/8 to 1/4 turn more. Many plastic items are assembled with self cutting screws, if you don't find the original threads in the plastic, your doing yourself and a future tech a disservice.

Took me an hour to clip the clutch in .Nearly gave up on it.It took me a day to finally get it all done but I took the clutch fully apart to replace both belts. The white spindle was nt too worn. Same probs as you getting the last screw in .A magnetized T15 is needed to get the screw in the hole centrally .Also similar prob with that last job. I would nt recommend trying this job if you re not used to fiddling with stuff as it will drive you crazy . I managed to wrestle the large belt on without the tool but it was a bit brutal .

There were a few steps that were more difficult than led on in the video. In particular, in order of sequence: 1) Getting the brush roller off in the beginning without using the metal removal tool thingy is quite difficult, much more so than led on in the video. Common sense told me to use the metal tool (the one used at the end), I did and made it much easier. 2) Removal of the orange carpet/floors knob was absurdly difficult. The tabs you speak of are not noticeable and it is was extremely difficult and frustrating to finally get it off. 3) Getting the new clutch belt back on the main motor shaft is extremely difficult, way harder than made out in the video, people attempting this be warned - take a little break and few deep breaths before you attempt and get it a little stretched out before you go for the final placement. VERY DIFFICULT! I do appreciate the video, but I felt a little misled on the difficulty level of the steps mention above. R

13:18 I’m having a big issue with getting the cover off of my Dyson DC14 so I can get to the clutch. I think I can safely say that it’s never been taken off before and despite how easy you make it look, mine just won’t come off. I’m afraid I’m going to break it. It’s most likely an issue with my small motor functions and finger strength not being that great. Is there a way to safely pry it off? There are 2 tabs. One at the top. And the other one you need to go under the machine and get it from below. It can be tricky. But it will come off. Keep trying , just make sure to not break it

I have a question. I have a DC33 and have 3 motors blow up on me. I’ve noticed that when I move the vacuum back when hoovering it sort of bounces against the pile of the carpet. Could the clutch be causing this issue thus making the motors blow up?

I’m really not too sure why the motors would be failing in a case like this. So it may be happening she to improper maintenance of the filters and brushroll. But I do have an idea. The bouncing affect you’re getting it most likely due to the cleaner head not sitting properly on the floor. There will be a clear or translucent hose that may be improperly seating or worn out. It’s a good idea to replace that anyways on a vacuum of this age. The part is only $9. The other thing I could think of the the baseplate being Improperly seated on the cleaner head, thus resulting in the bouncing affect you are getting. You can also take apart the cleaner head until you get to the clutch assembly and inspect it for any damage that may be causing the motors to blow up. The clutch may be the issue. It’s hard to tell exactly what’s going on without me actually being there, but something surely isn’t going right in the cleaner head area.

I have the belt off and can't get the brush cover off. I keep doing what you say and push on the gray part and it won't come off. Any suggestions?

Place a flat head screwdriver between the yellow and gray plates on top of the housing. Like when the machine is sitting straight up you’ll see the two prices meet on top. Use a flat head screwdriver to stick it in there any gently pry it apart on both sides. Sometimes getting those two catches off are hard, to trying from the top usually always works

Make sure the clutch is in the carpet setting when the McGwire is reclined back. It should work. If not please let me know

After stripping my machine as you instructed I find that Dyson Australia stopped making spare parts for the DC07 several years ago. Any idea where I can source drive belts and clutch?

As machines get older such as the 07 and 14 parts do become harder to source. I would highly recommend ebay and Amazon. Just make sure they are designed for your machine and read reviews if you’re buying off of Amazon. But those are generally the places that seem to have the most parts at the best price. There are other wel sites such as parts warehouse and they have tons of parts, but they are usually a little more pricey.

I have a DC33 and the brush bar will not spin I took it apart and both belts seem alright the small belt it pretty loose. I had the whole bottom off where I caold look at the clutch. And put it in carpet mode and turned it on both belts will spin but if I pull on the larger belt just a little the clutch stopped spinning. You think the clutch is bad or do I just need new belts ?

The belts are worn out for sure. Sounds like your biggest issue is the small belt. The big belt will work ok even if it’s stretched and worn. But my recommendation would be to replace the whole clutch so it will last the longest and give you the best cleaning performance. And so you don’t have to go through the hassle of replacing the small belt. The larger belt can’t be replaced unless you really know what you’re doing. That’s a job that I can’t even master and I’ve worked in vacuums for 10 years.

Sounds like it. Unfortunately, Dyson doesn’t offer a suction relief valve so there isn’t much of a way to solve this. But I do that some ideas. Make sure the brushroll is spinning very well. Replace clutch if needed. But I do have another idea. It may cause a loss in performance but not always. Remove the baseplate, you would see a black seal around where the baseplate would sit on the vacuum. Remove that black seal and put back the baseplate. That should solve your issue. Only do that if it’s really hard to push. It may cause a loss on performance but it’s not likely. If any issues happen, you can always put it back. But removing that seal has solved this issue for many people. So I hope this helps.

I don’t own a dc33. so no I have not. However it does work. The dc04,07,14,and 33 all have the same molding in the plastic of the brush bar housing. I am 100% certain it does work. I hope this helps😊

I ended up taking the clutch out again and putting it back in. I must have put it in slightly at an angle. A bit annoying, but you need the cover in order for it to work

Great video. I followed it, with all parts. But I'm having a small problem, when I switch the mode to hard wood floors it doesn't spin but it does when I switch to carpet mode. But all genuine Dyson parts. It's a dc14.

On hard floors mode it should not spin to avoid damage to sensitive hard floors. And the brushroll should spin on carpets so it can best the carpet to Posen the dirt and suck it up. From your comment I believe your clutch is working perfectly.

@@Michael-ob1yp haha yes these certainly were expensive. And these were actually the best built Dysons. The newer ones are also great and they clean better than these older ones. But these older ones were built a lot better and will last longer than any newer dyson. Not that the newer Dysons are bad per se. They still last longer than the average vacuum. But man these older Dysons are nearly indestructible. Simple maintenance and replacements along the way and this machine will be good for many more years. But you’ve gotta take care of it!!

Dillon, hellllp! Why is the T15 closest to the front not coming out? It just spins and spins with about 40% resistance but never comes out any further. Not sure what's on the other end. A loose nut? I removed the big knob on the side off already to see if it would help. It didn't. After watching a handful of these same videos I don't see anyone else dealing with my problem. I am so mad. I have a house that's half clean and needs to be finished for a party in 3 days.😢

Don’t worry! Let me try and help. Although this isn’t common, it’s certainly not unheard of. The best advice I can give to you is the try and pull on the piece that needs to come out at the same time as you’re unscrewing it. That should pull the screw out while you unscrew it. The plastic where the screw sits is likely stripped.

This might be the answer to my troubles! My DC33 turns on, but the beater bar does not turn. It’s associated with a terrible burning smell. I broke the beater bar trying to clean out the bearings, so I’m going to try your instruction. It can’t be the motor, right? Since it turns on? Before I go headlong into buying all the necessary replacements and tools for this repair, I’d want to know if it was the motor. Because that’s where I draw the line 😂

I’m sure it’s not the motor. The brushroll won’t turn, that is most likely due to stuff wrapped around the brushroll and bearings. And belts can smell really bad if it’s not spinning. So I’m sure it’s the brushroll. But since you smell burning, that means the clutch has been burning. So you should replace the clutch too. It could just be the small belt on the clutch, but since you have clearly had it for w while, you should just go ahead and replace the whole clutch. Please buy a genuine brushroll off of eBay as that is the cheapest place for a genuine brushroll. Amazon has generic ones for really cheap, but they don’t perform well. But you can buy the clutch on Amazon since it’s a genuine component. Clutch is $28. And brushroll is about $20. I hope this helped!

This 100% fixed my issue! So glad you posted this video. Replaced the clutch and the beater bar with genuine Dyson parts. With some good parts and a little know-how, I’m able to keep my beloved Dyson for a fraction of the cost to replace it with a new one. Thank you again!

I have a Miele vacuum as the best one that I can have; the Dyson has its merit being fairly powerful, but it's a pretty crude design overall in comparison. I liken it to an old muscle car compared to a BMW. Noisy, crude and effective. Holding down the head with your foot while tilting it into position, manual cord wrap, knob switch for carpet or bare floor. Not refined, but it'll do. My Miele runs silently in comparison, adjustable speed, retractable cord mechanism, electric switched brush, under bed capability. It does require a bag though; I like the bagless design of the Dyson, though having the attendant filter maintenance and replacement requirements offsets that.

This is a great video! Question, do I have to replace whole clutch of roller not spinning? Can I just do the belts? Wondering what I should order?? Or do I have to open it up to see, looking at the white band as you said?? @Dilloncleans

It is indeed possible to replace only the belts, however it isn’t an easy job. I personally would not recommend doing it unless you are very mechanically inclined or like challenges. As for the brushroll not spinning, it’s important to find out why. If it doesn’t spin at all, it’s likely a problem with the brushroll or a broken belt. So find out what condition the belts are in, then we can find out the solution to your problem.

@@DillonCleans I bought the whole clutch. Honestly just hate wasting plastic and hurting the earth but I got whole thing. In taking it out, I saw the wear and tear on the white ring so glad I got it all. Will let you know if I’m successful! Thank you!

I installed a brand new clutch assembly with Dyson labeled belts and it still doesn't turn!! The brush bar spins freely. The floor selector toggles between the 2 positions. Yet no spinning brush!

If it spins freely but doesn’t spin when it’s on, make sure it’s in the carpet setting and the vacuum is reclined. The brushroll will not spin if it’s in the upright position

That’s a little more complicated. That would involve rebuilding the clutch. You can watch videos on that. Not from me however. It’s generally better to replace the whole clutch because changing that belt in very complicated. Unless you are very good with taking things apart and you have the tools to do it. @@dubmob151 certainly replacement parts. Belts and the white wheel as well as the bearings are the main wear points. But after the machine being so old, it may sometimes be worth it to just replace the whole clutch

Hey genius. I didn’t say to change both belts, I said you can change one of the belts. The other belt is not replaceable by a regular consumer as there are a lot of parts to it. And I did mention at 7:54 that it is worth it to replace the whole clutch because even if you replaced both belts, that white wheel inside is still worn down, which it shouldn’t be. Rude comments are never appreciated, but if you ever have a question, I’m more than happy to answer.

THey are slightly different. The dc14 was probably the best because it has better cyclones than the dc07. The dc33 was made out of the cheapest materials and has less power. But they are all good
