Sounds like you have a weak cell in the battery pack. It will cause the voltage to sag too low on high power and the PCB will cut off power thinking either the battery is discharged or unsafe. Probably time for a replacement. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I got curious, my V10 is still working just fine (smaller house) but wanted to see if this used plain old 18650s. Not a fan of them being in series. I'll admit I was (was) bought into the marketing a bit with their fancy cobalt-aluminum crap, glad I checked; had no idea they claimed 15 years of life (I freaking wish). Also, $130 for maybe $70 worth of cells, is their PCB and plastic shell _really_ worth the extra $50?
@HouseOfVacuums3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Cordless machines have given manufacturers a new guaranteed income stream with replacement batteries, which is why they are so expensive. Bought in bulk at wholesale I can't imagine that they pay more than $5 a cell (probably less), so MAYBE $35 worth of cells, then the housing and PCB. In any case, battery pack a very profitable for these companies... which is why they want you to buy in to their ecosystem. The whole thing couldn't cost more than $50 to make, especially since they are using Malaysian labor which is even less expensive than modern China. It is indeed kind of a ripoff, but a necessary one.

Anstatt billige Konsumer-Ware kaufe man lieber teure Industrie-Ware.

It's unfortunate, but that goes with the territory for anything that has a lithium ion battery. Some may run for 8 years with abuse, some may be well cared for and die after a year. There are just a lot of variables at play. Sorry to hear yours didn't last long!

Useful video! Thanks a lot. I add that all these packs CANNOT LIVE 15 years, even with good cells with good instentaneous amps like here, because must of all are built with only ONE range of cells in series... and that means a lot of out-amps quickly used for each cell, in particular with maxi power, with problems if it's used a long time without stop. Lithium does not like fast discharges in the time, even with good cells . And in a lot of videos I see it's sometimes also a problem for the BMS which cannot support a long time such a use ... These packs resist maximum 2 years if often used It would be necessary to have minimum 2 // cells ranges or more to preserve the out-Amps for good durable performances( like for good screwdrivers) , but it 's another weight...and another price! Specially with the new items with bigger power...and always weak batteries👺 Al these wireless vacuum cleaners must be used only occasionally and during a short time for small areas...but a lot of people are seduced by novelty of these technically interesting...and fragile devices. I got this V10 Dyson, but I will build MY own 2 // battery with a good BMS!...And I keep my old and good wired Dyson cleaner!!!...100€ every year for a new pack , no thanks. Excuse my approximate english, friendly from France, Michel.

Hi there! Sorry for the delay, It has been a busy few weeks and I'm just catching up with comments. I think the V10 battery project sounds cool, I'd love to hear more about it when it's done and see how it performs! I will say this. Vacuum companies in general don't take battery management systems or robust construction seriously. I have 8 Milwaukee (I think that would be similar to AEG in Europe) power tool batteries that are going on 7 years old now without a hitch. The power tool industry has proven that you can build a robust consumer battery pack, but that costs money. And vacuum companies are notorious for cutting corners for either profit or price advantage. It's unfortunate, but consumers will continue to buy Dysons over and over again with batteries that fail. Tradespeople are less forgiving when they rely on a tool to make a living. Cheers!

@@HouseOfVacuums Hi Matt, thanks for your answer! It's very easy (for the moment) to build a DIY battery with a dead power drill pack. Simply disconnect the BMS and change the cells , BMS re- connected and it runs like new. Impossible with a Dyson one : BMS (more exactly PCB because no balance...a shame) is immediately blocked after disconnection.. This "locking" is technically absolutely not necessary for a good protection of the pack by the BMS . It simply obliges to change the battery without possible repair...first of all for trash commercial reasons (like for a lot of E-bike batteries now). So my project is simply open a good one and connect a second cells line with same capacity and discharge amps under the first one without touching the BMS always connected. And modify the packaging. Normally that will allow a use for minimum 5/7 years, although a cleaner is much more used than a power drill! A 400/500w motor cannot run a long time with such "one line" packs...and Dyson knows that precisely. So they explain not to use the "Boost" , or only for a very short time..It's a joke?? I add that we find on KZbin a lot of dead Dyson batteries (red light) with simply faulty BMS without any cells issue...as like BMS was programmed to switch off after X recharges or uses (like for some printers)...and I dread this issue. Well, by Dyson deliberate weak and "protected" batteries behind a performing and efficient technology. Maximal seduction...with poison in the apple. And you guess why. Friendly, Michel.

I just took my battery pack apart and had a bad 18650 battery, Dyson would work for about 5 minutes or so. Apparently, the batteries are rated at 3amps. Ordered 6 batteries replacements and will be replacing the one in the pack when the replacements arrive.

Cool project! Just make sure the BMS gets power (low voltage) the whole time you are swapping the cell. If the voltage drops to zero, the BMS will basically lock the battery out of ever charging again. Hope that helps!

Dyson claimed No loss of suction and then when Cinetic came out that claimed it's the only vacuum to never lose suction. Unfortunately it is not just Dyson. Pretty much any vacuum cleaner that runs on lithium ion battery packs cannot have the cells replaced/repaired. Lithium ion cells can be recycled, but it is sometimes hard to find a drop-off depending on where you live. Thanks for watching and commenting!

You can do a cell replacement, but you will need to maintain power to the pcb board. If you don't maintain power, once you disconnect a cell, your board will be locked, even if you spot weld new cell back, it will be locked and flash red

I'm not saying Dyson actually does this, but it is well established that you can extend the life of a lithium battery by using shallow charge-discharge cycles. So for example, instead of recharging to 100% you recharge only to 80 or 90%. Some electric vehicles and cell phones have shallow charge modes for default day-to-day use, which you can override in cases where you need full capacity. The extreme ends of the charge-discharge curve are where the most damage happens to lithium cells. All modern lithium packs already attempt to limit this with battery management circuitry that limits the max charge voltage and minium discharge voltage, but these thresholds are set to be a compromise that gets you maximum capacity for reasonable lifespan. Manufactures don't like optimizing for lifespan because it isn't in their interest. A longer lasting battery with the same usable capacity costs more and is bigger. Will a buyer switch brands if the battery only lasts 5 years instead of 10? Probably not. Very few will even still use a vac or tool more than 5 years. Adding the additional cell might have been done to achieve longer life, rather than more capacity. (Increased probability of failure from having more components not withstanding.) You could test this by measuring the charged and discharged voltages on a 7 cell battery and comparing it both to industry norms and prior Dyson models with 6 cells.

It's not true. It's kind of true. No one knows what is 100% of the charge. Dyson's 100% is 40.35/7=4.35V . Its too high, max lion cells voltage is 4.2V!!! . Should be 4.2Vx7=29.4V. The original Charger is 30.45V 1.1A . I'll change to 29.4V 1.95A. Overheating kills batteries.
@imperialsecuritybureau60372 жыл бұрын
Very true. You could avoid this issue with one of those chargers that lets you set the voltage and amperage, which can also be used for other batteries. I’ve heard good things about these. Although I’m not sure if the BMS would do its top-end balancing if the maximum voltage isn’t reached, so that may result in cell imbalance.
