The quotations that best sum up the theme of fate in Rome and Juliet are 'a pair of star-cross'd lover take their lives' and 'I defy you stars' because the audience was foreshadowed the tragic events of the future, whilst the characters in the play had no idea of this, creating dramatic irony. Romeo exclaims 'I defy you stars' after finding out about Juliet's 'death', from Balthasar, making it seem that it was the stars (his fate) that determined this to happen.

Brilliant video! Thank you so much. One point that I thought would be interesting but wasn't mentioned, is that fate is something that the characters continually use to alleviate themselves from responsibility. I think that can be seen in many of the quotations you so wisely picked e.g "o' I am fortune's fool!" where it can be argued that Romeo's excessive passion and fickle behaviour was debatably the genesis of this tragic outcome. Might not be right but thought it was interesting :)

I think it's the quotation "a pair of star crossed lovers" cz it foreshadows from the genesis that this fate will happen without planned
