But all the other games support a variety of formats that keep old cards alive. And somehow I think that allow card designers to work better as just they have to focus on new standard every 3 or 4 years, setting a long term strategy and guidelines for the sets included there. In Pokemon there're just 20 banned cards (from the total 9k), and there're no cards banned for standard (yet), just for expanded (one of the 3 formats), and I think that's remarkable. Of course, I see in Pokemon a much cleaner architecture on how the game is designed and the impact is much more measurable. In Yu Gi Oh every card released impacts on other 10k cards (of course, with certain guidelines most of those cards gets a neutral impact), but this impact could be so good in certain cards that can lead to break the game, and therefore have N new cards on the banlist, with that promise of "all your old cards will be able to be used forever" actually is putting a high amount of your old cards out of the game (even for casual matches, because they are not fun anymore to play) and the ones that can be useful fall in the banlist risk zone, because they have an effect that has not a certain cost at the time was designed.

However, not adding a set rotation leads to much quicker powercreep. So technically you could play an old deck, but you will get absolutely wiped 10/10 times against a modern deck.

I hope Foolish Burial stays in the game. I just recently replaced a Dragon shrine I ran as a two of in my deck and it's been awesome since I can use both on the same turn! Anyway, the fact that there is no set rotation puts Yu-Gi-Oh in a class of its own!

I've never played this game competitively and never had the money for real cards, but back in the day I had that WC 2011 game for the DS and made a Horus/Jinzo deck that abused Grepher, Armageddon Knight, Destiny Draw, and Future Fusion to dump 3 Dashers and 1 Malicious into the GY ASAP. I could get double silence out extremely fast or just go into two level 8 synchros first turn by abusing Plaguespreader and Glow Up, with DAD for big problem monsters. Idk if that was a legit strategy but it's the only deck I ever built by myself that had such good synergy that it was basically impossible to ever draw a brick hand. I was really proud of that deck.

Effect Veiler being a Spellcaster and a lv1 Tuner and a hand trap, makes it not only a budget impermanece but also a really good card for casual play since it enables basic Synchro plays and for some fun strategies like an extra name in GY for Quintet Magician.

The drawback to upstart goblin isn't the 1000 lp. Rather, it's when you go 2nd and draw this instead of a hand trap or a card that breaks the opponent's board; or to a lesser extent, when your opponent locks you with imperial order and secret village.

That's not exactly a drawback, what upstart goblin is is basically a free space in your deck, you practically get to run 39 cards instead of 40. So if you draw into upstart goblin you can use upstart to draw into the next card for free, and that draw has a higher chance of drawing the card you need cuz there's one less card in your deck, upstart is broken no matter the context. Except of course the imperial order or secret village scenario you put forth but those aren't common enough to warrant calling that an inherent downside to the card

super-poly also combos very well with "Evoked Elysium", since it takes one evoked monster and one monster summoned from the extra deck. Not too easy to complete all by yourself, but if you take one of your opponent's monsters, it's suddenly very good.

Is there any chance that Summon Sorceress could come off the banlist (only to 1 copy)? Call me nuts for asking this but what about zoodiac ratpier to 2 copies or zoodiac broadbull (only to 1 copy)?

Summon Sorc kinda falls in the category of being a generic, easy to summon monster that can summon basically any monster from your deck, which is kinda just too broken to exist in yugioh. Doubt she's coming back any time soon. Broadbull at 1 would also be super scary. Ratpier to 2 is the most reasonable i think but even then Zoodiac was hit for being hyper consistent in a way that no other deck has ever been. Giving it that consistency back is definitely a little sketchy and I'm not sure Konami would want to do that.

@@TheMightyGiantDad I see. I do agree that summon Sorceress is a little too broken, i wish that something similar that was not as powerful but could be effective in some strategies existed. I mainly asked about her because I recently saw her and was going to order her until I saw that she was banned. Also, I play Lyrilusc's as my main deck. But shortly after master rule 5 began, I started playing Zoodiac's. They're really fun but I think that they need something to be a little more consistent. I found out that they were one of the most consistent decks in Yugioh history so I do understand that Broadbull might be too much for me to ask for. I'd be okay with either another Ratpier (I truthfully don't think bringing it back to 2 would effect much, 3 I definitely see being a problem) or at least 1 more barrage back but I think that was hit on the last banlist to limited so I don't think that will happen either. I highly highly doubt it but is there any chance that they'll print an anime exclusive card for the Lyrilusc's? I say highly doubt it because there are only 6 birds in total(3 main deck, 3 extra deck).

So, just so you know, there are multiple formats in Magic besides standard. If you want to play just the old cards, there's a format for that. If you want to play any card from any point in Magics 25 year history, there are two formats for that. If you want to play with cards from a point where card design really started to get good, oh man is there a format for that! Do you want to draft? Magic has sets that are meant to be drafted. And of course an ever changing standard. I don't know if you were trying to generalize, but the point kind of comes off uninformed. It also takes away from the fact that, if I were to walk into a Yu-Gi-Oh tournament with my deck from 2006 it would be a dumpster fire due to the ridiculous power creep and new mechanics. I could build an MTG deck from 2006, walk into a tournament, and still have a chance.

For only a card single tribute getting a level 6 2500 archfiend monster isn't anything to cough at. worth note that M:tG also has multiple sanctioned nonrotating formats (including the recently-introduced Pioneer) and runs tournaments for them. i think the very existence of this video shows a big problem with having the "default" format be nonrotating - you consider it noteworthy that a handful of older cards are still used, because they have to be continually power-crept out of the game or no one will have any reason to buy new cards!

Mtg player here, former yugioh player, but only casual. In magic, yeah they rotate sets out in the standard format. But that's why it's a format, there's like close to 6 others you can play including modern, which is closer to yugioh format of using older cards. You can use any card that isn't banned all the way back to a certain set from the early 2000's and even a format that goes all the way to the beginning of magic called legacy. Prepare to shell out some cash in legacy but modern is pretty open to new players willing to learn and on an actually realistic budget, and has decent entry level decks like mono green stompy and mono red burn. Sorry to ramble on and thanks for indulging me about my favorite hobby I can't do right now!

they don't set rotate but if you trade cards with any competitive player they can value cards as "seasonal". konami is not shy about using their ban list to ENSURE their newest set is the most broken and valuable thing in the meta, i remember the start of xyzs level limit area B came off the ban list, no one ever used it because they managed to UNFIX XYZs with rank up magics but ya, they never really use it for deck diversity. ty for content.

Spyral Resort is limited for a reason, and having essentially 9 copies of Necrovalley with Gravekeeper's Commandant + Terraforming will always be ridiculous. Other archetypes with great field spells aren't exactly competitive, but to use an infamous noob-killer of my local scene as an example, Terraforming at 1 means that surviving Ancient Gear OTK is no longer entirely contingent on being able to throw out a negate before Chaos Ancient Gear Giant shows up. Plus, you're assuming that no more field spells of equal power/utility will be made in the future, and that no existing field spell will find itself used in an unanticipated and/or degenerate combination with future cards, which is a pretty big "if" to be playing with. Limiting the generic field spell searchers not only curbs the strength of current field spells, but also acts as future-proofing against the consistency of any field-spell centric strategies that might develop later.

As much as I agree with you in that YGO not having set rotation is fun, I think it has become the only way to fix the game. Power creep (or as I call it in YGO's case: power sprint) is so out of control in YGO that I don't see any way of toning it down without implementing set rotation or doing a hard reset on the entire game.

@@smonkk8556 Because it's out of control, and arguably more importantly, will continue to spiral more and more out of control. Decks have become SO consistent that they can put up 4+ negates on turn 1 off of MULTIPLE 1-card-starters. Traps are a joke now because they're useless unless you go first (or have a way to be used from hand or grave). Don't get me wrong, I love combo decks, but when something like 7/8 viable competitive decks utilize 10 minute plays it becomes a barrier to entry for people not already familiar with every card in their opponent's deck. I could go on and on, but I shouldn't have to; current ygo just doesn't have enough interactivity anymore. Do you go first? If no, did you draw any/enough hand-traps? If no, you just lose. Also, if not having rotating formats is the reason you play ygo, then I have good news for you! Most games that use rotating formats also have a format available to use everything except a handful of ridiculous cards.

Effect Veiler is so old that Yusei uses it in the anime. Its first appearence was during the wild west-arc, I think. When I first watched that, I asked myself if that's truly the next episode. There was no build-up to it. It really has barely anything to do with the story in general, but it gives some closure for Kalin Kessler's story, I guess.

Not for the special summon but for the foolish burial effect yes. You can tell because of the semi-colon.

I think it's a summoning cost, kinda like tributing for a lv5+

@@NeX-ow1ih it is in a single line of effect "You can Special Summon this card (from your hand) by discarding 1 Level 5 or higher DARK monster" Since there is no ";" there is no cost to summon this card which means that you can trigger all your Darkworld and Shaddoll effects. The other effect on the other hand has a cost because the text is "Once per turn: You can discard 1 DARK monster;" meaning that everything inbetween the ":" and the ";" beeing a cost therefore you can't trigger Shaddolls since they have to be sent by a card effect and not the cost. This has nothing to do with Tribute Summoning lvl5+ monsters.

@@drak5860 The summon of Dark grepher is inherent and discarding is a condition that needs to be fulfilled for it. It is NOT considered an activated effect, therefore cards that need to be sent to GY/discarded by an effect, such as Shaddolls and DWs will NOT trigger

One of the main reasons that I left the game ( besides insane non restriction of special summons) was that light monsters and Fairy type monsters have the WORST support. It's like whoever is in charge of Fairy type monsters is the chick dressed in a maid outfit getting everyone else coffee. F... THIS GAME!!
