Well the title of the video is kinda click-baity, as it is more about the lacking support of TCG-Yugitubers, than Konami not understanding their own product. I expected stuff like the lack of localization of essential cards of an archetype ("Frightfur Patchwork" & "Subterror Guru"), because they don't get that those might be needed and can sell products, if they are still relevant then. or stuff like "F.A. Winners", which shows a clear misunderstanding of the archetype.

I heard exactly what you said, you could have a point, but there is a huge difference between your two examples (tcg ygo and heartstone). Blizzard is known for wow. That is crystal clear to all of us. Wow isn t what it used to be, as an income for blizzard, so they released heartstone and it worked(possibly better than they thought). For konami, ygo is just a mere percentage from their income, especially in Europe or usa, so it is only logical for them not to "care" so much or "understand" at all. If ygo starts being the main income for konami, you can make the same discussion again, with much more to talk about. But right now, you were just biased and trying to prove an illogical point (at least from my POV). Keep up the good work.

While the commercial was cringey and meme-worthy, I understand Konami's logic, from a business stand point. Duel Links targets a casual, nostalgic audience, primarily. In that regard, casting a Pokemon Go KZbinr was a stroke of marketing genius. There's probably a lot of overlap between people who fondly remember Pokemon and Yugioh, so if that guy's name cache caught their eye, there was a good chance they would be interested in the product. Can't justify those bizarre boxes, though.

@FeanixFlamage6 жыл бұрын
i get what you're saying, but at the same time i'd really hope that if they do see that, that they'd understand where he's coming from as a player and a consumer, and take his criticisms seriously in order to build better packs moving forward. granted, they only have so much control in the tcg since the ocg determines the bulk of each set usually, but they can still control the rarities of cards and when the set releases for the most part, and they have complete control over the non core sets like the legendary collections/decks, star packs, and any time they do something like making the pendulum evolution structure deck a booster set instead.

While it's true that Cimo does that, it's also true that he's targetting a meta sliver of the community with his content hence he will give opinions on product based on how useful it is for the metagame. Surely Konami is well aware when they release product that's not intended for competitive players, and if the only reason for excluding Cimo is something as petty as retaliation for justified criticism, then Konami shows a facet, as a gaming company, that spells more of ruin than success. But since neither of us know for sure this is merely speculation.

However it feels like it was more of a 2nd thought than anything else. In my communications with "Konami" they expressed a desire to reach out to DuelLinksTubers and YugiTubers more in 2018 (Whatever that means). Why they choose 1 channel over another I have no idea. BTW Duel links players play and keep up with the TCG meta lol. If they are anything like me, they keep up with the meta by watching channels like these. I think there's a lot of personal wants that people could have from konami for yu-gi-oh, but then there's large pockets that come to agree with wants. Interaction with the player base, rarity bumping (personally I don't care as much on this one), prize support, JUMP promos etc. I think it's fine to voice displeasure, but I also do agree, when they do a good job like Konami Europe does so often, they deserve some props also.
@DARKGORZ6 жыл бұрын
The thing with Konami, like with other large gaming companies like EA, is that they seem to be drifting more and more towards "Get rich quick" schemes rather than keeping to a loyal fan base and actually doing things right by them. It's all about a fast dollar, hence the erratic ban lists, the severe lack of synergy between OCG and TCG releases, and pushing petty apps like Duel Links as opposed to actually paying care and attention to the real life card game. Personally I had hoped that after the backlash against EA's loot box scam, that it would have been a wake-up call to gaming companies across the board and across gaming mediums. That sadly doesn't seem to be the case.
@admontblanc6 жыл бұрын
I don't have anything against DL and it's actually like their best idea in decades even though I rarely play it, it was a good decision. But, the prize support, the mess with Jump Promos that make it seem like there's 3 versions of the game instead of 2 (and reminding people here that initially there was a single banlist but the player base insited on different banlists since OCG got the new stuff first always anyway). This video mentions Blizzard a lot, and they are definitely a large gaming company that is thoughtful about their fans/costumers, even though they are basically trying to make money as well. And although Konami needs to improve a lot in many areas, what the majority of people want isn't always the best, and the proof is that even though being so often and hugely criticised for their decisions (often correctly), Konami is still a big company and raking profits.

The one thing I will say about the Duel Links trailer specifically, they may have looked at how Pokemon GO attracted mostly people who weren't into either the TCG or the video games and attempted to go for a wider audience that might have some kind of nostalgic attachment. It's weird, but I can kind of piece together what the thought process was.
@Phase4TheProphet6 жыл бұрын
I'm not saying they're actually comparable, but I can see where Konami maybe didn't understand the difference between the two applications like you outlined. Also, bear in mind that dzeef even mentioned that one of the presenters in the ad was a PG youtuber. I think Konami just saw PG as a 90s nostalgia cash grab and figured they could go for that same market. And I don't think it's a huge stretch to say Konami didn't know what made PG successful when people in general seem to have a hard time picking out what made it work so well. I don't think Konami's decision was a good one, I just think you can kind of see the wonky logic behind it.

WotC does something similar with spoiler weeks ahead of prerelease for a new set. They give cards to members of the community to reveal to the players in the weeks leading up to the set release. It is especially relevant because during prerelease players know what cards are worth playing in a sealed environment and it lets them develop strategies early.

A fellow Duel Links KZbinr here, who also got a crate from KONAMI (And had only ~11K subscribers when I got it). Clearly the product was a KONAMI US PR thing, intended to promote the beginning of Duel Links' second year and in the words of their PR staff was 'as a thank you for supporting Duel Links this past year'. As Dan said below, they did express to me that they'd be hoping to work closer with content creators in the future and if we needed anything just to reach out to them. It does suck the TCG doesn't seem to get the same treatment, but given how big Duel Links is - and how much of their revenue it accounts for I can see why in this instance they're more focussed on it (which you can also kinda see by them introducing speed duel products to the TCG this year)
@pingchang23326 жыл бұрын
Konami is detached because it is not an English company. Even if they are going to reveal cards, they will tell Japanese youtubers to reveal them. It will only work if TCG players get to reveal TCG exclusives. There is a bigger bridge to built for konami because the release dates for products are at different times of the year. Not to mention the different products that are available/unavailable.

@Mernom6 жыл бұрын
YGO and gaming may be handled by different departments, but they bow to the same board. And with how much bad publicity the gaming department has been gaining, I'd pass the word to do some reforms there if I was up there... But they didn't. So they don't see it as a problem.
@robledosarhento15676 жыл бұрын
The higher-ups only say if a brand will be discontinued or not. They do not really influence what each specific department does. You're seeing Konami as a monolithic entity when they're not actually. The Konami that manages the Yu-Gi-Oh! card game can in fact be subdivided into Japanese, America and Europe branch (could be more, but those are what we know for now). Their operations are in fact different. The European division of Konami is actually doing great (interacting w/ community through reddit account, Facebook polls, bringing back traditional format tournament, etc) compared to America's hands-off approach.

Japanese led brands seem to always have major fuck ups in the west and in general be slow to capitalize on opportunities. I think the problem is that they usually have to get approval from the Japanese side before they can really do anything. I suspect either Japanese businesses are very slow to do things or they just don't understand how a change can benefit them overseas and carry on as normal until their ship sinks.
@owenbegoin97276 жыл бұрын
The problem is that they pass up channels that talk bad about them. They constantly try to fix things by covering it up. Also, link monsters ruined Yu-gi-oh, they are basically required at this point because so many decks rely on their extra deck, they killed pendulum too, and every kind of new special summon mechanic is better than the last with power and consistency.

However, while he did go to film those videos, he was ultimately shutdown from uploading them. Not by Konami though; someone higher up (potentially N.A.S. TV Tokyo).

i wish people would stop beating the dead horse about cash prizes. Takahashi said no cash prizes, so until he changes his mind on that, move on. Play ARG in the US or CCG in europe if you want cash prizes. But Konami can have better prize support overall, thats where the focus needs to be. Point 1:We all assume konami makes lots of money on YCS attendance, but in actuality, they ALWAYS operate at a loss. Simple math: multiply # of attendants times entry fee($20). Usually to rent out a room in a city's convention center takes upwards of $30,000, that does not include security, vending(if applicable). So theoretically each & every YCS has to have a minimum of roughly 1500 in the states to break even. But we know even in the USA(with larger general population than EU or Central/South America)that isn't happening. Salt Lake city YCS had less attendees than regionals in my home state of Texas. So Konami operates at a loss for almost every YCS except big commemorative ycs events like the 75th, 100th, 150th, etc.. Look it up in your own city how much it is to rent out a space for 2-3 days for ygo & you will see that Konami don't make shit off of YCS attendance, period. This is also why there are no live streaming in US YCS events, the logistical nightmare of child consent & privacy laws that vary from convention center to convention center & from state to state in the US & the monetary constraints associated with that. Point 2: What other TCGs give educational scholarships(how do they do it) & can it apply to Yugioh?(though it would me unrealistic to hear Konami give a response on that) Point 3: Giving out the latest gaming console isn't inherently bad(unless you already own it). Point 4: Prize cards, the crush card fiasco back in the SJC days is proof that they aren't putting meta-relevant or busted cards as prize cards anymore. People need to better frame the conversations & concerns in an intelligible manner. Every year the community complains the same about the same thing. We need to unite on a feasible solution that works for all parties involved.
@manytorchics6 жыл бұрын
The really interesting stuff is that Wizards of the Coast actually does that for Magic the Gathering. About three weeks before a new set releases, spoiler season starts, and so many Magic youtuber get exclusive preview-cards. The player surveys they take and seemingly listen to and at least try to understand their playerbase, it's more than they ever used to do. dpYGO (Yu-Gi-Oh!), who is a YugiTuber, already does the "reviewing new cards that will come to the TCG soon" idea. He's pretty good at reviewing new cards, says the pros and cons of the new cards, and says what Archetype deck, the new card would be useful/good in.

as someone whos apart of the gaming side of youtube as well as a yugioh player,i don't understand the disconnect yugioh players have with thinking konami cares about anything.

Your videos, cimooos, Davinators + Yuginono, are all a very interesting lot that i like & frequent primarily because it lets a casual such as myself that while will probably never play championships gives me at least some ghost of what mindset I'd want to carry as a player and how i would want to arrange my deck as a whole. what combos can i pull? How often? What weaknesses? Can i defend said weaknesses and is it worth it? What monster is best suited to be "The final boss"?These are but a few questions I've always asked myself since watching yours and all the others.

What i hate about yugioh is how konami insists on nerfing cards instead of printing nerfed versions like other tcgs or even them in the past have.

Magic The Gathering does the stuff you mentioned hearthstone and others doing as well. They have players that are known on youtube to reveal cards from the set on videos either on the official MTG youtube channel or their own channels.

5:39 in fairness to team APS those at 30-40% of their content is opening packs and products so Konami may have noticed and thought makes sense.

I don’t watch or follow other tcg games too much but my friend and I talk about this kind of stuff a lot. I always bring up Trainer Tips for comparison. He is a Pokémon go channel I’m sure most people are aware of and niantic the company responsible for the game does a great job using his passion and audience as a way to promote and communicate with the player base

Dkayed (owner of Duel Links Meta) shared with us after the World Championship that Konami has 1 person who speaks Japanese and English who keeps up with the Duel Links community. He follows youtubers, and reads through reddit, then reports back to Konami. It's surprising they seem to have noone fulfilling this role for the TCG.
@johnbakasmoothhotchocolate6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I agree. Sometimes the rules of the card you use can get lost in translation because of the way it's worded. Even worse, some cards that once gave a duelist an edge have horrible errata issues because Konami feels that more is worse or just totally change it to make you think that the new effect of the card is better. I do like Konami, with all due respect to them, but they need to know to leave some things alone.

@dzeeff it would be cool if you made a series explaining why some archtypes are "bad" and explain helpful ways of how to improve said archtype kinda like what you did with F.A.s for example in one of your streams you told me that dark magician is bad because it doeant have a win condition and to this day im still confused lol

The exclusive card reveal for youtubers is a thing in MtG which is played in paper so I don't see why Konami can't do the same for tcg exclusive cards. Imagine if dzeeff got to reveal the FA cards himself?

Its so funny that when ppl start comparing the games they do youtube on to another game that is doing something better its always blizzard doing the thing better. Blizzard does loot boxes the best in overwatch compared to call of duty. Blizzard does promotions on heartstone bettter than yugioh. Blizzard does looter games way better than destiny like diablo 3 and Wow.

A pretty good review with good references of Konami’s missteps. Another couple of mishandling of the game is the following: Not releasing sets the same time in ocg. Not getting all cards imported to tcg like they did for electrumite and some of link vrains pack cards in EXFO. (Frightfur Patchwork, Number 29: Mannequin Cat) Not extending Shonen Jump Promos to the Euro TCG.

Konami just needs to rebuild YuGiOh. Start over fresh, at least in the TCG. No more crazy errata, no more localization issues of cards being or not being part of an archetype.

I hate the current pie chart. Too big pieces. I want many (somewhat) equally small(-ish) ones. Every deck should have a chance to win and compete. Loop: New support > alternatives > bravery > deck building > competing > success > diversety >happiness > new players DO IT .

I subsricbe to the tcg channels such as yours for helpful info on certain cards and strats.. that cross over. YTDAN, duel links meta, gunsblazing, shadypenguin, mariozrg, are some of the bigger links streamers.

Maybe Konami is just making more money from duel links atm, so they want to focus on the more casual scene that spend money on micro-transactions rather than the TCG where some players make decks out of after market singles. Let's not for get Konami has a very exploitative past when it comes to video games. It's possible that's starting to seep into Yu-Gi-Oh.

Here's another problem - lack of official YGO online dueling sim. None of these complaints matter to people who are located in places around the world where the game is not supported and physical cards are not being sold. YGO card game is inaccessible to majority of countries around the world - how do these people play and support the game? I'd be willing to pay for streamlined, official YGO online game with frequent updated like YGOPro. Monthly payment/subscription, micro transactions, I don't care as long as the game is good.
@EgoChip6 жыл бұрын
It's not strange they had non-YGO people to front the promotion. They want to appeal to non-YGO players as well as YGO players.YGO players already know about the game.

Trish is a big ol nerd. She is a gamer and vlogger. She was huge on Sourcefed. It was a weak move for Konami to put her in commercial from a "Yugi" standpoint BUT she is an actor and nerd so i can forgive.

Now I like Konami, but I often feel like they’re trying to kill Yu-Gi-Oh!. Why do I say that? Well... They stopped developing video games to (from what I’ve heard) focus on Pachinko slots as they are supposedly more profitable & killed the Castlevania franchise with a bad reboot. In addition, I feel like there are way too many YGO cards out there with ridiculous effects & few/no drawbacks that the game is less about playing by the rules & more about twisting the rules in one’s favor. It often feels like they are trying to kill people’s interest in the game so they can move on to something else... But that’s just my crazy conspiracy theory...

The major problem with yugioh right now is the EXTRA MONSTER ZONE and all the Stupid rules that came with it, I mean for the most part I was fine with the field changing and I was looking forward to the effects the link monster were bring, but the E.M.Zone and the rules are what pissed me off and what's really annoying is nobody is talking about it, like they've all been brainwash to like it.
