@@geraldundone I am currently using a Sony a6000 for my videos with the kit lens but I'm looking at the Sony a7Siii but I am seeing the leaks of the FX3 and now I don't know what the hell to do. I'm hoping that the FX3 shoots raw and otherwise maintains a reasonable price. So disappointed in Canon right now because I like their glass and would prefer to stay in the Canon ecosystem, but really would like to have dual card slots recording video and the file sizes are tremendous. I'm also not a fan of my camera overheating. I would like it to remain reliable at all times, because the likelihood of it overheating at the worst possible moment is pretty high. I really don't feel like spending the money on a ton of CF Express cards, and after watching your videos on the Sony's realizing that they can shoot without the expensive cards and get most of the benefits is huge. I really wish that Sony would have the ability to control more from their touch screen like the Canon's do. but right now I'm focusing on lighting, and just got 2 of the new aperture 100x with a light dome II and the MC 4 light travel kit, which has been the biggest difference in my video quality thus far.

Just got my Full Vespid set a few week ago and I'm loving them a lot! They have a really beautiful focus roll off which makes your images look very cinematic and also makes skin very pleasing to film since the sharpness is not that high. High sharpness is not always the best, especially when you want cinematic images.
@nicktherogue73063 жыл бұрын
I agree with your aesthetic observation, but it's worth noting that you can do a lot of things to soften an image on set or in post if you want that look for a particular scene or shot, but you cannot make an image which is softer than you like sharper in a pleasing way. These lenses look awesome though. Definitely considering picking up a set so thank you for your recommendation. :)

Nick, why waste time in post. I feel a lot of new filmmakers rely on the cliche modern saying, “let’s fix it in post!” Time is money. Get it right the first time. I say screw the post production fix, it’s a bad habit to get in. Just my opinion. Everyone has their way of doing things.

Great video as usual! It's always interesting to see more simple optic designs compared against modern lenses especially in the photo space. A certain level of softness is usually really pleasing and things like that cat eye bokeh are sometimes sought after in the cinema space with lenses like the Clavius lenses even having a fake insert for it. I really like the overall look of the Vespids and I agree they are probably some of the best value lenses in this segment. I'm on a waitlist for an upcoming set from Dulens (the APO Mini Primes) and their optic designer is taking heavy influence from vintage cinema lenses (retrofocus, double-glauss, etc..). They breath like Ultra Primes, have a rainbow circle flare, bokeh deformations, they are very "imperfect". An APO design though so no CA. I'm excited to compare the two when they ship. As well as compare them both against my cinemodded vintage sets like the Contax Zeiss and Mamiya Sekor C.

Thanks for this review :) The pricing is approaching that of vintage prime sets from the stills world like my favourite Contax Zeiss lenses, so I can definitely see the appeal to get a matched set with gears and full manual control already in place. A matte box will take care of most of the veiling flare so that's not a big deal in the cinema world.

Thanks for this very helpful review. Couple of questions for you (or anyone who has used the 90mm macro). Is the focus breathing on the 90mm macro so bad you can't pull focus (in which case why would they put a focus ring on it!). And secondly, I've seen reviews of the Irix 150mm macro which says the focus so SO, SO sensitive, like a couple of mm on the focus ring equates to 20-30ft, making it almost impossible to nail the focus. How is the DZO 90mm on that front? Thanks in advance for any help.

Ever since I got my first Veydra lens, and then Meike I've been trying to understand what makes them feel so cinematic. DZO's lenses seems to be in this category too (from what I can tell from test footage). I have a theory that it has to do with well controlled Spherical Aberration creating really immediate smooth focus fall off but I really don't know at all. It would be fantastic to have that topic get the Gerald Undone treatment--see what objectively it is that makes some of those budget lenses that are purpose-built for cine (not rehoused stills like Sigma or Rokinon) just look so much more cinematic.
@roland.boyden3 жыл бұрын
Or maybe this is just a category where there is no non-subjective answer. I have no idea. but I like the idea that all these traits that get described as cinematic or organic or filmic actually have scientific explanations to them.

@@husainfoolath4287 Overall I think I prefer the Meike lenses (but it's close). But they also don't have a full set out yet so if you need to shoot a feature or something now then DZO makes more sense. The telephoto DZOs are beautiful but the 25 and 35 just didn't do it for me when I rented them. They felt a little soulless. Honestly I think Meike's Super 35 lenses look even nicer than their Full Frame ones though so if your camera is Super 35 would 110% recommend getting their Super 35 lenses instead.

SLR magic are optically good but terrible at focus breathing... I was going to take a kit for Fuji but saw a focus breathing test and was shocked... For the price the old Fuji lens 1.4 (at least 16mm macro and 23mm have no focus breathing at all, light, same format insane optics...) Considering those vespid have skyrocket in one month since I began to search for a cine kit (all dzofilm have taken 300€ ) they are no longer a good deal in my opinion. At almost 1600€ you can have better option for slightly more or almost as good (irix, meike?) For way less.
