Tbh I'd prefer they keep it as is. Not because it's too dark or anything, I just really like the way the ending is. Gamma wins, but still has the conflict of it's own existence, only to be killed by Beta before it can act on it. There's a nice sense of ambiguity on whether Beta's final attack was out of mercy for Gamma, with Beta having gained his own sense of sentience, or simply a killer robot acting on instinct in it's final moments. I feel like that's lost in an anticlimactic scene where Gamma just shoots itself. At most I would like them to merge both endings. Gamma thinking Beta is defeated, turning away from Beta, and contemplating shooting itself to complete it's mission (with great hesitation), only to be shot by Beta from behind before it can make a decision.

A cool detail about the japanese version of SA1 that I think was kinda lost in translation is the way Gamma speaks throughout the story. You see, in japanese there's a very distinctively stiff and impersonal way of military speech, and stereotypically robots speak this way all the time (I guess all that is true for english as well to some extent). Anyway, the brilliant thing they did was that, while Gamma speaks like this most of the time, sometimes he breaks out of it to say something that sounds much more like how a normal person would speak, kinda like if his real personality was breaking out of that cold robot exterior. I have to play the game again to have more examples, but the two I remember best were him saying "komatta" (困った), which means "(I'm) bothered" or "(this is) troublesome (for me)" when he was transported to the past by Tikal (this same line was translated as "this presents a problem" in the english version). The other line was when he was listing the robots that were left to "save", and named Beta, then when he realized he was one of them as well said "boku?" (僕?), which is a first person pronoun mostly used in everyday japanese by boys and young men, and not something you'd ever expect a soldier to say.

I will forever be incredibly puzzled why the direction in storytelling in the adventure games isn't the one the series follows now and how the direction the series is going in now with its stories is "more appealing to sonic team" Clean off the cheese, improve the presentation and you've got a good set of stories, Gamma's story is one the best examples of this. 10/10 video

Because the fans were not impressed with the stories after SA2; especially Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06 (both of which were deemed to be trying way too hard to outdo SA2). Not to mention many people were getting sick and tired of Eggman predictably getting usurped by the monster of the year (nor does it help that Eggman was treated like a villainous punching bag so often by Sega). They also felt too much attention was being taken away from Sonic himself and that some of the gameplay style made during the 2000s just did not it the series (especially treasure hunting). It was eventually decided by the fanbase that they wanted the stories to become more simple again. For Sega to focus on fixing the gameplay; even if it meant at the cost of the story (considering mainline Mario often has basic stories (aside from Rosalina's backstory in Galaxy 1) and classic era Sonic also didn't have deep stories). For Sonic to really be the only character that needed to be playable or even have that much focus on the story. Considering that series is called Sonic the Hedgehog for a reason; a reason that Sonic Forces forgot. Ironically, however, the fanbase has grown to regret telling Sega to make Sonic the only playable character (the closest to having more than just Sonic in years is with Forces and even then it doesn't quite hit the mark well). While many of the Sonic games of the 2000s tried too hard with their stories, now it feels like many of the games in the 2010s (and persumbly 2020s) play things too safe; especially at the cost of any real emotion in the story (though I can still do without Sonic ever getting into any romance with humans).

Sonics become a brand before a game franchise. The games are made to appeal to current trends of meme culture and purposeful cringe-humor before selling more plushies and figures. Sure Sonics always had a big mainstream brand presence (ppl who don't even play games sometimes have Sonic merch) but from the Genesis to Adventure run the games were the focus. Now they're just made to support the merch, like Disney's strategy

Gamma was always my favourite as a kid because "wow big robot shooty shoot" but when I saw omega I had no idea why I didn't like him as much As time has gone on I've grown and realised why Gamma is such a wonderful character, and you summed it up wonderfully. Though I'd love to see Gamma come back in something like a spin off game, I'd hate to see him brought back and weakened as a character like shadow was. Funny enough, in Sonic X, amy witnesses the very end of Gamma and Beta's battle, which, instead of taking place on the engine or whatever that cylinder is, takes place inside the egg carrier itself. They still knew to play to the original tragedy of the two killing each other. It, like all of Sonic X, is best experienced in subtitled form.

This is something I've been trying to get across to many people for a long time. Gamma's story in sonic adventure is one of the best I've ever seen in any media. I feel like you can't properly replicate every bit of Gamma's story in any other medium besides a video game, and that's part of what makes the journey from beginning to end so bittersweet. You grow and learn alongside gamma, even if you have knowledge through the other character stories of the overarching plot. You're with gamma for his entire life, from his birth to his end, and that's only part of what makes it so great.

Gamma will always be the G.O.A.T of Sonic. He's the best character in the series, story wise and one of the best design wise since he has such a great design and has so much personality. Gamma is also really one of the few actual characters in Sonic because most characters are just one personality trait and that's it. We need a Sonic Adventure remake just for thus. Imagine the cutscenes on a modern day console, so we can see more emotion and them moving a bit more freely. It would make already beautiful scenes from Gammas story mode even more beautiful, like the E-103 scene in the egg carrier where he turns to Gamma, the Amy scene, when Gamma deletes his master registration and especially the final scene. Gamma is the absolute best.

Actually in the Archie comics, Gamma stayed alive for a while and had such an awsome issue with Shadow and Omega that fairly expand on the character.

As a Sonic fan with no ability to play SA1 currently, I've always heard of Gamma but never actually took the time to learn what his story was. Watching this, it's a beautiful story. And imagining that Beta dismantling scene probably would have shocked little kid me to my core (heck, it shook me a bit watching it in this video). And it makes me a little sad because of Omega. Omega has been one of my favorite Sonic characters ever since my first Sonic game, which was Heroes. I love his design, and I think it's interesting how instead of being this pure soul who's been raised to kill, he's not like that. He's angry at Eggman for wasting his power. He's a machine of destruction and sees himself as that, but Eggman doesn't. Because of this, he wants to destroy Eggman with the very powers he so created. However, he never really gets to do much outside of that, just sorta becoming a robotic friend who helps out Sonic and friends, usually with Rouge and Shadow. I wish they would do more with his character, like have him go through this struggle of finding a purpose of what to do with his own power, now that he no longer has the purpose of fighting for Eggman, and the Sonic crew doesn't want him to destroy things. Maybe have him slightly go into a villain arc, where he becomes a mercenary, fighting only for causes he sees as just, occasionally turning against Sonic and friends if that's what his boss decides, but not having the heart to turn against Rouge and Shadow, the two who he truly cares about more than anything. There's potential with his character, but usually he's just relegated to spinoff games and minor appearances, not usually playing a big role in the story. Maybe he does in the comics and I just don't know about it, but I'd love a Sonic story with a big emphasis on Omega's desire to be powerful, and his innate desire for destruction.
