This is my version of the speed hack that doubles the speed limit without having to buy an expensive electronic device. Of course you need access to a 3D printer, but these are getting more common. Please feel free to leave your comment and/or suggestions. I always like to get your opinion about how I can improve.

Thanks heaps man it worked. I printed your EVO MD-1 design then filed the plastic down to fit my bike (Merida eOne Sixty). I used zip ties to strap it on. So far it works but in the long run I will have to print it again with measurements for my bike. Donated some money too cheers!

With some, actually a lot, of help from Thomas I made one of these for my bike. Works like a damn. Changed the crank sprocket to 44 tooth, can maintain 40 kph on level ground. Always carry a spare elastic or leave the original sensor further out on the spoke in case you need to reposition to get you home. Carrying an extra battery if you like longer rides can be helpful getting you home.

It is cheap if you dont factor in the costs of learning how to 3D model and owning a 3D printer. But I do love this solution. You can fine tune your speed limit instead of removing it all together. You'll probably want to machine the parts out of metal for rougher terain though. And maybe use a chain instead of a rubber band.

On latest Shimano steps you can not remove E014 if you use the magnet on pedal option. Motor need to be replaced. So this may be the way to do it.

@@jamiegrayson3739 I have not tried this. Important is that speed are not the same so different diameter is needed. But still the ratio always will be locked but not 1:1 but f.ex 1:2. So It may undersand that you have hacked it. I do use a box inn beween the sensor that gives normal signal up to 22-23 kmh, after that It just show speed around 23kmh even if I run 30Kmh

The frame has 3 holes where the sidestandard is attatched. There i attatched the wheel. Then i gluded a tierib on the plastic of the bachwheel axis. I bought a bag whit 3 camping elastic. I cut one and gluded it together. I gluded a magnet on the refreshingdevice and it works!

Most e-bike's depend for speed regulation on the train=>wheelcircumference/magnet/sensor. Most sensors are fed with pulses of 0,6 volt, but 0,5 volt will do the trick. If one tries to derive the pulses from a magnet placed on the pedals or primary pinion,you will have a lower cadance and still see the pulse , but the tension would be in the area of 0,2 volt, given the small circumference of the pedals.It is not so difficult to feed the sensors 0,6 volt using an elektro magnet.

I agree, but since i'm better at mechanical stuff than electronic stuff... Also, this is quite rugged and doesn't require battery, don't risk to destroy the shimano electronics and is fail safe. If something goes bas, you just slide the original magnet back in place and continue your ride. I've done 3000km with this and it is still working like a charm. Just need to replace the rubber band every 1000km or so.
@IvanBenkovic
@IvanBenkovic 6 жыл бұрын
Sure, your gear is nice and simple, I like it. But there is problem with very slow ride in steep hills when Shimano says some error code and interrupts motor power for second. It is caused by SW protection. Electronics can do non-linear gear ratio (up to 20km/h 1:1, faster 1:2) , but mechanical does not by simple way (maybe centrifugal gear switch would be needed). Anyway, your machine is helpful and good solution for road riders who are familiar with 3D printing.

It has been almost 3 years since you installed the system. Has the system thrown any error code and is still the engine still working? If so, how many miles on it have you put (I mean real miles since I guess the miles reading is wrong and reduced by the same proportion as the ratio between your wheel and the rear axe). Thanks
@atcaron
@atcaron 4 жыл бұрын
Good question! So far 7150 km so about 4400 miles. Real distance, I installed another speedometer to read the real speed and distance (as shown in another video). I only had codes when the elastic band broke (every 2000 km or so) normal maintenance I guess. Other than that everything runs fine. The key is that the motor is not overdriven to higher power or current. I just removed the speed limit.

@@atcaron Thanks thomas, that is great. I was only worried that even if the power is not increased, technically the motor spins faster when you pedal at lets say 30 or 35km/h (the speed I would typically go at) so feared the internal gears (made of Nylon I think) would get over-worn very fast, and since I think/understand no replacement gear can be found, this would be very problematic.

nice work, did not you try to change the wheel circumference through e tube software? I have steps 8000 and it works for me. you need only logged in a company version. I have a wheel of 2200 mm circumference and I set 1400mm. At a speed of about 30 km / h, the display shows 20km / h. the actual maximum speed is about 45 km / h depending on the gears
@atcaron
@atcaron 5 жыл бұрын
This is really interesting information. I have a steps 6000 system. In the past I tried to use the e tube without success. Maybe I should try the latest version. Is there a minimum wheel circumference? Could you set it to half the real circumference to double the seed limit? With my modification, my top speed is 64 km/h (twice the original 32 km/h). I frequently go to 50 km/h, so in my case 45 km/h would not be enough. I also changed the front gear to a bigger one to have more top speed.

If you put the magnet on the pedal, the Shimano system will detect that the wheel goes exactly at the same speed than the pedal and will give you an error message after a few turns... To make this work, you need to put 2 magnets on the crank. But then the max speed drops too much.

While this is a nice idea, just a friendly reminder - in EU countries - being caught with this on your eBike will be a very serious punishment. Not to mention, if you have an accident and/or injure someone with this kind of modification you will be punished severely for it - since the 25km/h speed limit is there to prevent serious risk to both eBike riders & the general public.

My bike has 11 gears and the motor cuts out on the 9th that's dangerous your going up a gear and hit a massive wall you got a massive sudden loss of power its like throwing a car in reverse when doing 80 mph especially when going up hill down hill i hit 30 mph so what is the point when you go down hill the restrictions don't work anymore any way lmao

Can you just add a second magnet on the wheel?
@atcaron
@atcaron 5 жыл бұрын
Sam's Town Cyclery Cameron Park Shingle Springs this would have the opposite effect. The speedometer would read twice the speed. Therefore the max speed would drop to 16 km/h instead of the original 32 km/h.

Damian Szymański you will get error e014 if you put the magnet on the pedal crank. With my modification you will not get E014. The system reports E014 when the wheel speed and the crank speed is the same.

I'm now up to 10500km with this modification without any problem. Maybe the magnet is not properly aligned with the sensor. Double check where the magnet should be relative to the sensor. Maybe also your magnet is to strong or too weak. make some test holding the magnet in your hand and passing it near the sensor.

Why dont buy an ebike that can go faster, innstead of this shit. Ive a mecanic in a bikeshop and we are importers of on eof the big brands worlwide here in Norway, and i cant count the times people commes with a hacked bike. They want me to fix after they fuckem up. We just show the the door and explain why we dont want to help. Pluss all garanties are out the window as soon you do something like that. And its also dangerus. How many times ive seen accidents with ebike s becouse they go to fast to other people to react and move. One of my friends broke here arm after beeing hit by and ebiker that was to fast. Polise tok his bike, he has to pay for all here treatment, pluss a big fine for him. And he deserves it. People comming in 40-50 KM/h on the sidewalk its absolutley insaine. And are you lucky and a old lady comes around the bend on hers ebike, you dont have a chance. For me its about care about other people and safety. And why do you need to go ,,40 km/h on the trails, its dangerus for other people that walk same plase. Its better to by a class2 ebike, register it so you can drive on the road legally. Ore buy a fucking mxbike ore moped, its cheaper also. Then you have more power for less. Ebikes are great tol for the right guys, they are funny even in uphills. But i crush every ebiker around here with my endurobike in the downhills every time. So for me its just stupid. And most of the time its so tecnical trail you cant go that fast anyway. Thats what these bikes are made for. And you can ride longer, so you can play more in the woods. But do it the right way guys. Thats all.
