2:45 Almost EVERY car you can buy is capable of exceeding legal speed limits. In fact a car's (or motorbike) top speed has NO bearing on its road worthiness. So why should it be any different for an ebike? Unless you're arguing (by implication) that cars and motorbikes should be speed restricted to not exceed legal limits, your comparison actually works against you. It's a dumb rule that only adds confusion, inconsistency and unnecessary complexity to ebike regulation. Picture an ebike that's "assist restricted" travelling down a steep hill below the legal speed limit but above its assist restriction. In this case no rules are broken but the "assist restriction" law is made a mockery of. If an ebike (or any other bicycle) is not breaking the law going down hill, WHY should it be deemed to be breaking the law on a flat for travelling at the exact same speed?

I agree 100% I've been looking up E-bikes as I'm really thinking about getting one, as I don't have a driver's license yet, and our only grocery closed in town. So I started looking into these as a way to get to the town over. I realized very quickly that the speed limitations, doesn't make any sense. If anything I've learned that a lot of people that get E-bikes, don't feel like their going fast enough for cars behind them.

Exactly 👍🏾 How can prove it ? My ORBEA rise will do 15 mph at max assist but I’ve hit 35 mph on a downhill trail and it’s NOT de restricted AND I wasn’t pedalling so
@johnf33262 жыл бұрын
15.5 mph is ridiculously low. 20mph assist limit would be sensible. Even on my emtb on the flat I can get to 22-23 so why not have the assistance? Likewise if you have high assist like turbo you can move along the flat barely tickling the pedals, so why not have a throttle mode for emergencies (get you home with an injury) or even getting up those difficult areas where many pedal strikes could not be avoided. I can hit over 30 downhil and roadies can pedal at 30 on the road. Whats safer? Pedalling hell for leather side to side or having assist where you can progress more smoothly and pay attention to the traffic?
@herrtomas67292 жыл бұрын
Agree. I feel I’m battling beyond 15mph, where I ride my ordinary commute at about 18-20mph on the flat. Don’t need ridiculously higher limit, but 20 would be the sensible spot. Anyway where did 15.5 come from? Sounds like a kph conversion…

Also look at gearing. My eBike is 4:1 max, yet road bikes are closer to 5:1 and can easily top 40mph. I can reach 35 on a gentle slope with my motor off - and I’m the wrong side of 60!

You are choosing to ride on a surface designed for vehicles, you are in their domain, if you want to keep up with traffic put more effort in or pay the insurance for a higher wattage bike, i find most peoples attitudes to e bikes are just lazy cyclists, im a lycra wanka and an e bike rider, when i want exercise and speed i ride my road bike, if i want an effortless leisurely ride I grab my ebike. Now this is a different story for elderly and disabled as there is a legitimate reason for needing the assistance, but again if you want to go faster in a vehicles domain then you pay for insurance. So its not really about safety when it comes to speed, you are naked in the air with just a helmet vs a metal box, you choose to take the risk, just like anything in life, i mean id like it if the e bike went faster but that is just me being lazy
@AleksandarGospic2 жыл бұрын
As I wrote several times, for me cool solution would be to have additional ROAD mode, in which limit would be like in the US (20mph/32kmh, although round 30kmh would still be fine with me), while rest of the modes can keep this 25kmh value. Of course, law should change to allow that, but from my experience I don't think it is necessary to have 32kmh limit in every mode and every situation cause saving battery and working more is also important. One can argue, well you can just turn off the assistance at 25kmh if that's you want, but that's not the same cause it's not practical and transition is way smoother when bike does it. Or maybe we could choose the limit for each mode in the settings menu, so if someone likes to go 30kmh in trail or eco, why not.

As you guys are regularly smashing rides on e-bikes, why not show some realtime stats on wear and tear on your own bikes ie., how many miles you rode before the chain gave up, distances travelled, issues that presented themselves. This would give existing and potential users of e-mountain bikes a perspective of owning one.

Volspeed 4 on my Bosch. You plug it in, put the motor cover back on and you now can go up to 28mph. No error codes, no pressing buttons to set etc. Its amazing and how the bikes should come stock. Now when you're running up to a big grass table top in a park you don't have motor shut off right before the jump, same goes for any biggers jumps, it is downright dangerous to have a 53 pound bike of dead weight right before a jump, I couldn't even imagine it shutting off at 15mph. Remember this has NOTHING to do with the motor or battery, the only reason was the nanny state Karens who felt that was a good limit, well f.....k them. Do you need over 20mph in regular single track or if you don't do bigger jumps? maybe not, but would be nice to ride to the trail head a bit faster.

Since your group of channels ignore the S-Pedelec options available. it is mainly German channels that review those. The EU has better integration into the transport system by realizing E bikes are not Mopeds and changing the laws to allow for Ebike helmets rated to the Dutch safety standard and not requiring a non breathable motorcycle helmet like the UK. So it is quite reasonable that the available ebikes are being derestricted so that comfortable full suspension rides can be had on the way to work over all the pot holes. Dutch statistics have realized that most people who ride unrestricted ebikes travel at about 35kph. Since roadies normally exceed these speeds with ease where are the calls for those speedsters to have tax and insurance?

I was expecting ways to overide the speed limitations of the eBike. The eBike is capable of much higher speeds than the default settings, most riders would need to pay significantly more loot to buy a faster bike when their current eBike is cable of the same speed that of the more expensive faster model. It's by law that the eMotor not be tampered with for higher speeds than regulations would allow. Look at the $millions being taken with these laws, but of course it's all about people's safety and not the money. Let's face it, no one is sensible enough to ride a bike at a higher speed than 25kph, we'd all fall over and die a horrible death. "Silly human race".

If your bike has walk assist mode you can hold that whilst peddling and it by passes the derestrict 😎 thank me later guys 👍🏻

Hey Chris & EMBN, Happy New Year!🎉 And in the new year, I hope you will retrain from content on "derestriction." I would suggest you focus in on "the right e-Bike for the job," depending on where a rider intends to ride. I say the above as more and more BLM officials, here in the U.S., are EVEN banning various classes (1, 2) of e-Bikes from Multi-Use Trails and Shared-Use Paths! All because of unsafe, illegal or irresponsible use! BAD FOR ALL OF US RESPONSIBLE RIDERS! Thanks & respectfully, CS The (USA) eBike Guy⚡(x2)

What on earth are you suggesting by skinnier higher pressure tyres and other tips; the point is we're restricted to 15.5mph by the Bosch or whoever algorithm. As soon as you hit that speed you're pedalling against the motor, so no matter what you do won't make any difference. I added a Bafang motor and 1000whr battery to an old Dawes hybrid bike and it was a hoot, especially going past 'serious' group riders. That's now died so I've ordered a Cube Reaction hybrid 750 which will have plenty of torque but ludicrously slow top end...Volspeed, I think to the rescue.

You don't know physics. Skinnier tire = less resistance = faster speeds. The bikes computer will not show that (because it is being fooled) but your gps will.

Chip it and set to 22mph. Ideal speed
@MrJoelDavies2 жыл бұрын
22 is certainly quick enough. But I find it’s easy enough to pedal 20mph at full chat. So 25 is a nice bonus for me. Although mine will go to 30 at 100% effort/engine assist ratio. 30 is good for keeping the cars behind happy (if any). Whereas anything lower feels like crawling speed to them. I feel I would still feel the speed limiter kick in at 22 like I can feel it kicking in at 16mph on my dads limited bike, which is a horrible feeling and at times more exhausting than not having any assist at all. I think it also depends on where you ride it. Off road, yeh 22 is fine I suppose. Around town I would more like 25/30 to keep myself away from traffic.

If you increase tire pressure a little bit you can do easily 35-40 kph on the flats with a little training. On the uphill sections 25 kph is fast enough. If that's not fast enough, Husqvarna and KTM have some very nice enduro motorbikes.

I’ll pay you £500 if you can demonstrate to me you can pedal a heavy EMTB (restricted to 15.5mph) to 25mph on the flat. I don’t believe you. I’m an ex racer, have a threshold power of 350watts and I can’t do it. Are you a macho man with a loose association with the truth?
@f87max302 жыл бұрын
@@turbolevo8703 The Bosch CX 4 runs absolutely frictionfree above limiterspeed. The numbers I quoted were numbers I've seen on my display but I'm not sure if that was on completely flat terrain . As soon as the weather clears I go testing.
@turbolevo87032 жыл бұрын
@@f87max30 Peddling a heavy EMTB with high rolling resistance tyres to 25mph (which is a 100% human effort) I reckon takes north of 700 watts. If you are an exceptional athlete you might be able to manage it for a short while. The average weekend warrior has no chance. The average power output for the average rider is around 280-300watts and that will give you a speed of 17-18 mph.

No it's not, there would be too many idiots tearing up trails and riding too fast in places where they shouldn't be. The laws punish the responsible unfairly but also protect folks from the idiots.

I'm looking at getting a whyte e-160 (with bosch e-motor i think) how easy is it to derestrict? I have private land I can use the bike on and would reallly love to have the derestricted option. I'm UK based. Due to injury I can no longer use a normal push bike but really don't want go down the road or light off road bike option.

45 is ok on the road but not off road erm ok . I thought UK voted for brexit to get 32 , maybe it was other reasons ? One google away from sorting your limiter if you want 40 is the sweet spot where you don't notice it fading out and it still has some punch if you fall short of a bigger jump while not draining the battery stupid fast. Its people that need a limiter and judgment of where to use the full capability and its not on a shared single track. Before you go mental my country has no legal limits you only void wty which was not a problem for me p.s. the motor is still perfect after 1000s of km
