I do a lot of group rides with men. As a 58 y/o woman it’s hard to keep up for the entire ride - I can manage for a third of it (on an 80 km ride) take my turn on the pace line etc.. and then I’m done and have to fall back. I’m considering getting an e-bike so I can stay with my group for the entire ride. We’re not racing here but going at a good pace of 26 to 30 kph. I feel bad that someone always comes back to pull me which is great but you know? I wish I could pump out the same watts as a guy but I can’t. The group is awesome though and we have so much fun! I think it’s good to be inclusive of everyone and like you said Jon, if someone is riding erratically they should be spoken to. Great video 🤩

I ride with one of the most well respected bike clubs in Utah. EPIC Cycling Team. I love the association, good will and upliftment a cycle club has to offer. I ride a CREO e-road bike. Never at any time have I heard a disparaging comment from my team. What is a group ride? As stated above Jon wanted his group ride to be an organized training session. I'm sure "Race" teams have those kind of organized training sessions. Our team has some racers, they are great guys and gals. They can get together and lead out at what ever pace they desire. The rest of us just love being out there. Should I be banned from the club ride? Absolutely not. Should I ride with respect for the other team members? Absolutely. I am 64 years old and love my team/club. I can keep up and enjoy the workout. My bike has no throttle, it's pedal assist and I work hard. FYI I have lost 40lbs with the club.

One thing about ebikes is most are ridden by those who have problems with staying together when on normal road bikes. I ride a recumbent trike in my group rides and my trike weighs 45 lbs. Plus I'm heavy so I'm at a disadvantage to the other riders in the group. Having e-assist would allow me to stay with the group and not be dropped and still get my exercise.

Thanks for talking about this. I'm doing my first event in a couple weeks, a Gran Fondo with a lot of gravel and elevation gain, and I'll be on an eBike. I've watched videos of previous events and haven't seen a single eBike, but the event organizer assured me that eBikes are Ok (and a "touchy subject with some"), I just won't get a placing time, which I'm cool with. My big concern is being received with scorn and disdain, because the event is viewed as a big sufferfest, but I'll be riding with assistance. I'm on an eBike because an injury slowed me down and limited my mobility a few years ago, so I wouldn't be able to experience the event otherwise. I don't want to show off, or take anything away from anyone, or disrupt anyone else's experience, I just want to enjoy the ride. I'd prefer to be invisible but my bike will standout in a big way. I considered hanging back, but then I worry about the hills, because that's where I'm most likely to pass people, and I don't want to do that. So, since I'm not being timed, I'm considering asking the event organizer if I can start 15 minutes early, to get out well in front of other riders so that if anything, I'm offering a confidence boost for anyone who passes me. What are your thoughts?

E bikes are a life saving machine for those who are way up in the age range of cyclists and those who are physically challenged for whatever reason. It’s a joke in our bike club about the ebikers who ride up hills as slow as us non ebikers do but to each his own. If the ebike enables older or physically challenged folks to ride a hilly 30mi ride it’s good. And it’s good to have them out riding with you where they otherwise wouldn’t.

Hey Jon, I'm relatively new to the sport so I'm curious - thinking back to when you started out riding, did you ever get leg cramps after 25-30 miles? I have more than enough juice mentally to push myself, but the cramps physically lock my legs out to where I have to stop every couple miles and stretch once they start. I'm very on top of my nutrition, hydration, and electrolytes, and I've heard for newer riders it may just take your body getting used to longer rides for the cramps to stop. Just curious of your experience and how long it took/how much riding you had to do before those stopped (if you did experience them). Thanks!

I have only had cramps under extreme conditions in a race. I would check your overall hydration and nutrition. But if you have not done any exercising at all prior to cycling it could be just your body getting used to it

@@jonmaloneycycling7593 thanks for the reply! I’ve been a weightlifter for 8+ years and ran semi-regularly before cycling so I wouldn’t think it’d be that. But yeah I’ll take a look at the nutrition again and see if there’s anything I should tweak. Thanks!

If a guy turns up to a group ride maybe the group could then decide to do threshold type efforts drafting off the TT bike

E-bikes on social rides is fine, but any ride where people are being dropped and there is some element of competition, they have no business there. It is also a bit weird because they can’t relate to any of the others, if the group is suffering up a hill and they can just relax and stay in the group, they become outsiders anyway. And what about more powerful e-bikes that can do 100+ mph?

IMO ebikes are great for commuting, errands, transportation, and casual use. But I don't respect it and find it dishonorable when people use them for sport and competitiveness and for going fast among people working hard on standard bikes. Its super super lame. On any non race event though its kindof a grey area and I'd have a hard time banning them despite my feelings towards them.
@nickdalamagas3540

@daryl4841

@@nickdalamagas3540 Sounds good to me. Its a totally different sport as far as I'm concerned so to segregate them from standard bikes makes sense to me. I think unfortunately organizers of paid ride events may not exclude them because less money, which kind of makes me less likely to partake in those rides.

As long as the E bike stays with the pace line on a casual ride. TT bikes on a casual ride as long as they don't go arrow. Nobody showed up at the Newmarket Eagles group ride with a TT bike. That said the Eagles hold time trials during the week.

We rode together 5 years ago in a MEC Fondo and you came across as a bit of a jerk and even got in a yelling match with some of the ride leads. I've been watching your videos and it's seems you've gone through a lot of personal development since then which I respect even more than your fitness development. I hope we get to ride together sometime in the future when you're back in Canada!

I'm sure they still admire and respect your talent and speed even if their expressions say otherwise. With ebikers on the other hand there is nothing to look up to. A rower doesn't feel beaten or impressed if a motorized bass boat flies past him.

why the f..ck should you show up with an e-bike on a group ride?an e-bike is a perfect bike for people who get less mobile and i cheer to that, but for me they have no place in fast group rides. if the group is to fast for you on a regular bike then go and find a group who rides at you're pace.

Right the Ebikes wouldn’t even keep up since fast groups go for 40mph or more but her you can de restrict it
