Hey Jon, not sure if you remember me but I used to work at La Bicicletta in Toronto and helped you a number of times. I’m getting back into cycling after leaving the industry 6 years ago for a desk job. I randomly found your channel and I’m so impressed with the knowledge and the content you’re providing, it’s getting my stoked to get back on the bike again. All the best. Spencer

This was so helpful. I recently did this and wish I had this video to reference beforehand. The one thing I had an issue with was figuring out the which side of the inner chainring went out. I was installing all black FSA chain rings and there was no clear indication which side went out. I thought I reasoned my way through it but it I was wrong. When I put it all back together, having the wrong side of the inner chainring out made the whole inner chainring flex at the bolts. This resulted in massive chain noise. When I figured out what the problem was, I took it apart again and reversed the inner chainring. All was good after that. Just wanted to drop a note in case anyone else runs into this situation.

The problem with Shimano only offering 11-30 and 11-34 cassettes, is that I can not use the one size and the other even less. I hope they will release someting like 12-25.

Hi, not sure how you care about the paint job on your emonda, but every time when I work on my slr p1, I cover the drive-side chain stay with a cloth, cause I found the top coating quite ‘gentle’ and the chain easily scratches it. Perhaps, reapplying a more wider helicopter tape would be another option. Thanks for vlog, Jon! Bye ✌️

Interesting topic and good to hear you mention cadence. While people often ride with their cadence too low, I think there are two things that I don't hear being said. First, good cadence doesn't just happen, it requires training. Second, our most effective cadence can (and in my case does) vary with load: uphill my most effective cadence is much lower than 2% up or down. Not pro mechanic ... true, since you're not being paid. But pretty good none the less :-) Lots of little tips here, good work! Questions: I see you using a Shimano chain. I find they wear ok (on customer bikes) but there are lighter ones available. Do have a reason for using that chain? I didn't see you replacing the factory lube (I don't either). Many people have strong opinions one this. What are you thought?

I have always used the shamino chain because I have always thought the oem chain would work best. I have never relubed a factory chain

Unless you get the exact measurement for b tension you can never get the indexing right. You must use the Shimano guide or use a tool with exact spacing required. There is no eyeballing 12 speed, you have to follow directions, or you the changing under load which this group-set is suppose to accomplish flawlessly gearing it will feel like shit.

This might be a personal question but I notice you shake a lot. Are you healthy? The way I see your experiment trying a new gearing this must have cost about $600 or more. Most of us don't have or want to spend that kind of money. I understand the Pros being picky when they have a team budget supporting them. For 99% of us doing what you just did doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Such strange comments. He’s making content, for people to watch… it’s bike tv. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. He’s not forcing you to change anything, he’s showing what it involves. Maybe people want to watch a guy work on his bike or were considering doing the same? Regarding money, we’re you expecting “how to change your gearing for $99”? Yes rings and such cost money, big money for the newest which 12 speed is. Cycling at the high end is golf, you don’t need any of it. If you just want to bike,go do it with an old 9 speed. I’m still riding 10 for some reason but will switch if this supply chain ever gives me fair choice again.

I didn’t even notice the shaking, I had a physical last year and everything was perfect. I think its because its actually pretty stressful for me shooting a video like this while working on something, keeping a happy engaged attitude. Also, it might not seem like it, but I am really rushing and in my head not relaxed at all because I don’t want the video to be boring, add some coffee in and that’s what did it. Everyone gets to spend their money how they want to, you can change your gearing with ultegra for less that half the price.
@charlesmansplaining

@@jonmaloneycycling7593 Good to hear you're okay, I like the content. I only mentioned pricing because you didn't. I know some people feel the need to remind those that focus on price that it is their money and they should be able to spend it how they want, which is true but a lot of people get OCD over cycling and neglect to put money away for rainy days then you end up with a class of people the Politicians have use tax dollars to support. Sensible spending should always be a talking point of any video that shows dream builds. That's my opinion. I have a bike I've put $12,000 into building but I feel it was was kind of stupid to spend that much on a bike even though I can afford it. Which is another reason why I don't think I should spend any more to change it and just be happy with it the way it is.
