UMX ASK-21 horizon Hobby Sailplane with added EDF 30mm

The glider is 57 grams without the lipo. The factory lipo is 4 grams. So you have a weight gain of 27 grams. The edf I am using is 13grams, lipo is 13grams, 5 amp eflite esc is 8grams and my foam pod is 1 gram. Subtract 2 grams for their servo for the release and I am at 90 grams. Just 2grams over you and I may be able to trim some more weight by reducing wire lengths and maybe remove some foam. Its a fun plane but I love how it looks with the edf pod on top. Orion, Your mig 15 is using a servo/reciever brick that has a built in 5 amp ESC. So to use your motor your going to have to use a seperate 5 amp ESC if your going to use the brick in the ASK-21. Unplug the servo that is buing used by the release pin in your glider and convert your new esc to the same style plug the release pin servo is using.

johnjay1980, Yep just like a normal reciever you can power the reciever thru a channel port. So by using a ESC w/ a BEC you can run larger batteries to run larger motors!

You can cut the plug off that servo and solder it to the esc. Then you will now be powering the ASK-21 from/thru the new ESC, so you won't be using the existing battery port any longer. Plug you Mig-15 2S battery into the 5 amp ESC power wires. I believe if I remember right the release pin servo is programmed as the Gear switch, so you will have to use a programmable radio to mix the gear channel to the throttle channel.

The Mig 15 board does not have the on board linear servos that the one I ordered does. I fear that reflashing the board for the ASK-21 may remove the throttle function, though I will try it and see. Right now, reprogramming the board for dual aileron setup may mean that the as3x will only work on one of the aileron servos but that is OK, it will still do the job.

Actually, I just found that I can get down to 82 grams if I use a board from the Carbon cub. It has the Brushless setup and the linear servos on the same board. There is a way to program it to use dual aileron servos.

What did you use for an external shroud,It looks a soda bottle,but what brand and size??????

Thank you for the help with this. I have a DX7 so mixing will be no trouble. Right now my edf and pod ad 14 grams to the plane. How heavy is yours with your modifications?

The way I see it - E-Flite should just make another Version of the UMX ASK-21 with onboard EDF, Call it "UMX ASK-21EDF". It would sell like crazy !!!

I have this glider but the zip start flights are way too short I really want to power it up with a pod. Any hepl will be greatly appreciated. Jack P.

Do you have any details on how you hooked up the motor? I have a defunked Mig 15 and I would like to put the edf on one of my ASK-21s. Would like to keep everything as stock as possible. Is is possible to use the current board that's in the plane?

What happenened to the board out of the Mig? But be careful to double check the AS3X gyro system so it works correctly with the glider after installation. But with a special cord availible from Horizon you can reflash the carbon cub or mig board to the preset ASK 21 data.

OK, so the lipo will now plug into the esc which means I can remove the battery power leads from the ASK-21 brick and use them for the esc...Right? How much overall weight did you add to the ASK-21?

Use which ever end your battery already has on it, your choice. Weight? I did't weigh it before but it did't make a it a problem, but with the battery it now weighs 88 grams
