Try removing the vacuum propane regulator and running a needle valve into the engine to control the mixture manually, that way you can test whether it is engine damage or just poor fuel regulation, you could grab an automotive lambda sensor (narrowband) and using only the 12v heater and a multimeter see what kind of mixture you are running. Quite a lot of these engines use valve overlap for exhaust valve cooling with petrol evap, and running them on propane without precision mixture control is going to be very tricky, as i have already said. An egt sensor is very cheap, you could tune it exclusively with this to aim for a richer than 14-1 mixture, you can also reduce valve temp by using a bubbler full of water on the intake or an ultrasonic fogger. I really wanted to get one of those i3 rex engines setup for something like this, its just perfect if you have space, the inverter can also be controlled with a hubener board from openinverter, so you can use regen to control the output voltage and current, regardless of rpm. What so special about the kia nero alternator ? A kubota diesel would be sweet, I want to do that some day. You could do with a flexi on the exhaust, its quite long to be completely solid the whole way, you could get a decent small bellows piece from some car with an egr on it.

Looking good so far. Maybe some heat wrap round the exhaust to to help it stop burning the wood at the bottom. Start it up! I want to hear it from the outside also.

That was black heat resistant paint which made it look like the wood was burned. I do have the heat wrap which I will add once I am happy with the design.
