I love the stories Drew Barrymore tells about this film, Steven Spielberg made sure that ET was always active when she was on set- making him appear real to her. Steven filled a father role that she never had, and this film started that. Some people were creeped out by this film, I find it heartwarming ❤

It was actually the puppeteer crew that notice she was talking to the prop during downtimes so they made sure that at least one of them was always free to animate it to some degree to maintain the connection she had. The end result was her emotional goodbye.

You cannot imagine the emotional trauma that an entire theater of children endured during a screening of this movie. My 2nd older sister cried herself into a bloody nose and then threw up on herself because of the blood. I was 4 and I only remembered all of the crying. And now I will only see E.T. as Wendy Williams. Best. Reaction. Ever. Jason, I'm sorry for your loss! Losing a co-pilot sucks, but you had more good times than the sadness, and that means that he loved you too.

Another masterpiece score from John Williams. My parents took me to see quite a few films as a kid, but what I remember most was my dad taking me to see _Star Wars_ and _E.T.,_ and the little "sniffs" I heard from him at the end of this. This film just blew everything else away that summer, and there was a major effort made to keep E.T.'s appearance a secret for as long as possible. But eventually, he was doing the "phone home" in commercials for AT&T.

It was the highest grossing movie of 1982, $792 million dollars ($1.2 Billion dollars today) against a $10 million dollar budget. Director Richard Attenborough, whom won for Best Director and Best Picture for Gandhi, said that it was one of the best movies ever made, and calls it his favorite Spielberg movie. 11 years later, Steven Spielberg and Richard Attenborough would team up for JURASSIC PARK.

In the part where Elliot lures E.T. with candy. Originally E.T. was supposed to eat M&M candy. But the whole thing was a massive missed opportunity for Mars Incorporated. Spielberg originally intended for that iconic moment to involve M&Ms. The only reason they never ended up in the movie was that Mars Incorporated, who own M&Ms, refused to give the filmmaker permission to use the multi-coloured chocolates. As a result, Spielberg chose Reese’s Pieces as a replacement. Hershey Foods, who own Reese’s Pieces, struck a deal to promote the movie, dedicating $1 million to advertising, all whilst Universal allowed them to feature the titular alien in their visual media. Earning close to $800 million at the box office from a budget of just $10.5 million, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial became a significant hit and, as a result, sales for Reese’s Pieces jumped 85% in the weeks following its release in June 1982. Remarkably, the film and candy are still inextricably linked, with the deal between the movie and the food company being one of the most successful examples of product placement in movie history. And personally I prefer Reese’s Pieces myself over M&Ms. They're quite tasty and one of my old time favorites. When I go to the movie theaters. Along with plain popcorn and coca-cola.😄

There's really no genre for this film. That's the remarkable thing about this film. It's just what I like to call pure cinema. It's why we go to the movies and love movies. It's why we love movies. Simply a masterpiece of a film. There's a reason why it is the hallmark film the 80s. When we watched it the theater the theater clapped and cheered and cried at the end like I've never seen (only Titanic and Top Gun: Maverick were similar). People just realized they saw something special.

I swear the score at times has similarities to the Star Wars score. Does anyone else hear it, too? Its a cool theory, but its more than likely the directors just giving a nod to each other. If im remembering correctly, they were good friends. The costume actually kinda confirms that its not canon. How would there be a yoda costume if he existed in the galaxy far far away?

A lot of movies in the 80s caused us major emotional damage. What was messed up is this, Poltergiest and The Thing came out while i was between 6 and 8 and my parents were neglectful enough that i watched ALL OF THEM. I didnt sleep for years. Also there is a movie out there, not sure if it holds up, but no one will remember it. I garuntee it fucked up people on that level. It was called Baby. About a dinosaur. Not sure if it holds up. For me its like Benji the Hunted. Never again. Their are tons of gems like this that did some damage or we would never forget. Star Man. Theres another one. Last Star Fighter was fun but had shit that scarred me for life. We also had tonics like Explorers. The Last Navigator. Then we get Howard The Duck and gen X are fucked for life. No going back after that. They made Robocop and Rambo toys. They knew are parents were too coked up to care. You know that episode of South Park where Butters gets hit in the eye with a throwing star? 80s ninja movies. THAT was our childhood. NINJA 3 the Revenge. So much WTF we end up dodging home made shuriken in the playground. My nose had been broken by 7th grade. Good times. Lol

We lived in a 3-story home in a decent neighborhood near Washington, DC...had one older sedan & bought a new VW bus, went on nice yearly vacations, etc. Daddy, as sole breadwinner, made $6,000/year!! Life was sooo different back then, people nowadays honestly can't even imagine it. *sighs* What's sad is that I raised my daughter as a single parent in the '80s and life was still so different from today's world!

30 years ago when we were low income, my mom was always telling me that most people are living the way we did and that we were doing just fine but somehow I always knew in the subconscious that someone doesn't like the fact that the masses could do just fine

Especially if you know how to fix up places. My parents bought a 100 year old house in a borderline neighborhood. One side of the tracks was really poor and suspect and the other was really rich. But the front door wasn't even attacked, there was a huge bee-hive in the house. It needed a new roof and plumbing issue. Kind of like the house from the Tom Hanks film The Money Pit but not nearly as nice. But they knew people that knew roofing etc.. and fixed it up themselves. Those houses don't exist anymore, at least in nice neighborhoods. The banks buy everything up making the housing prices rise.

Fun fact: in the 2011 comedy movie "Paul" (Seth Rogen, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost), the alien "Paul" consults with the real Steven Spielberg who was looking for advice on his new E.T. film. Great cameo (voice only).

This is, in my opinion, John Williams finest creation and that's some body of work to pick from ! The whole 'Adventures on Earth' suite from the beginning of the final escape and chase leading to that final rainbow stanza is PERFECT. It never, ever fails to reduce this 50+ year old guy to tears. Wonderful work from the Maestro of Maestros and he knew it because it was one of the rare occasions where Williams actually asked Spielberg to hear what he had composed without the footage. Why ? Because he couldn't match the visuals with the score as per usual but he knew he had something special. Spielberg agreed and once he'd heard it he took the movie back and re-edited the final scene to match the score. Henry Thomas nailed his performance. Do you know the story about his audition ? He wasn't the first choice, another kid was chosen but whilst he could act, after losing a game of Dungeons & Dragons being played on set during further casting he showed his real colours when he lost. He kicked off and became a real asshole of a kid and the casting director realised the real person behind the act wasn't the sweet innocent 9 year old they wanted and nobody liked him so they axed him. Word reached them about a young boy from Texas called Henry who seemed to be the real deal, a great kid who could also act. Due to time restraints after the first error of judgement with their initial choice for Eliot, Spielberg had him flown out to audition in front of him in person along with the Producers. He was given a general premise and asked to improvise - and it was filmed. You can view it on KZbin. Famously, at the end, with hardened Hollywood producers in tears, you can hear Spielberg tell him: "Ok Kid, you got the job..."

"He's a man from outer space and we're taking him to his spaceship." "Well, can't he just beam up?" "This is REALITY, Greg." Let's not be too hard on Keys (Peter Coyote). He does literally nothing wrong and shouldn't be considered a villain. He's just doing his job protecting us from free loading illegal extra-terrestrials and dolphins. Keys is a hero to the #HumanityFirst ideal. Fun Fact: Feature film debut of C. Thomas Howell and Erika Eleniak. Ford Galaxy Fact: Yes, that is the VOICE of Harrison Ford as the faceless teacher. Richard Swingler is the physical actor. Pinocchio's Revenge Fact: Most of the full-body puppetry was performed by a 2'10" tall stuntman, but the scenes in the kitchen were done using a 12-year-old boy who was born without legs but was an expert on walking on his hands. ER Medics Fact: The doctors and nurses who work on E.T. are all real emergency room technicians. They were told to treat E.T. the same way they would treat a real patient, so that their dialogue and actions would seem as real as possible. Reese's Legacy Fact: The filmmakers had requested that M&Ms be used to lure E.T., but The Mars company denied their request, fearing that E.T. was so ugly, he would frighten children. Reese's Pieces were used instead, and as a direct result, Reese's Pieces sales skyrocketed. Because of this, more and more companies began requesting that their products be used in movies and Reese's Pieces became a movie theater stable. However contrary to popular belief, this was not the birth of product placement.
