perhaps a dumb beginner question (in fact I just play a dobro and only aspire to being a beginner pedal player) but what happens if you use pedal C (4th string whole step) and the LKL (4th string half step) at the same time? 3 half steps? Broken string? Rift in the space time continuum?

Ha ha, not a dumb question. You can actually do that, but think of it this way: I usually raise the E to F# while having the E to F knee lever in. So, when I release the pedal, the note comes down to F. So, the higher pull actually, in a way, cancels the lower one, if that makes sense. It does depend on what the strings can take and the mechanics of the guitar, though. I think Paul Franklin's guitar can do things like that. I know he can raise his six string from G# to B. I’m having a bit of a setback, I play in an E7th tuning.. My open E to F# the lever which holds the F# doesn’t come back to open E all the way it stops short at F. Any suggestions why that may be? I oiled the rods I tighten the pull springs I loosen the pull springs I tuned one note then the pegs Changed strings I use plain instead of wound I’m not sure what to do next..

Hey, Michael, what brand of guitar are you playing? I would assume the fix might be (if it's coming back sharp) that you would need to lengthen the pull (the distance that it's traveling). Probably when you run the nylon nut in you're having to go too far to get up to the F#; so that is actually holding the finger. Sometimes you can get around this by tightening the return spring. Sorry, but without looking at it, it is kind of hard to diagnose. Maybe email us further about this or you might also be able to contact others on the pedal steel guitar forum that might be able to offer more assistance. Keep picking!
