While in a sailboat race with a Columbia 44, the block snapped off of the boom, while we were in first place. I used two blocks from the spinnaker and got it working again. We still won the race as we did it while underway and never stopped. I wish I had a video of it. I was the tactician and fore-deck man. Others on the boat ware starting to panic, I kept my cool, and the skipper never took his eyes off of the lay-line.

For a refrigeration! I use a 64qt Engel 12 self contained fridge, I only have 200w of solar and it powers it and all my electronics fine. I opted for it over a built in fridge for flexibilty as well. I enjoyed exploring that island today zone via your eyes. Thank you! Your traveler car was doomed to self destruct as it was an aluminum body with stainless hardware. You can see the corrosion on the top of the car body. This corrosion was also eating through the fasteners. A maintenance item I did on my boats was to disassemble such joints, where I could, and coat the hardware shanks and mating surfaces with RTV. High end running gear for ocean sailing is all stainless for this reason, also high dollars:(

I went down to my boat today to brings some parts to the mechanic who is replacing my diesel engine. Little did I know that he was on vacation this week. This engine swap has been going on since Apr of this year and is pretty depressing. Today was expecially depressing because when they called me and said the motor was finally in they also said they expected to get it started this week. With the mechanic on vacation that's just not going to happen. DEPRESSION!!!! Thanks god for your video today! You gave me a reason to smile and more importantly.....have HOPE! Thanks for that....really thank you! I wish I could afford to support you financially at this time because I get so much from your videos. great video, and nice fix, but as another "tack" on the same problem, I am an owner of a Duncanson 29'6" boat, with simmilar traveler design, mine has STOPPERS with spring loaded pins (they go in the holes in the traveler track), stopping motion either direction, the main sheet tacke is anchored to the moving car, that's it, no "adjusters" on the ends, so maybe just source some of these stoppers, fixes this issue quick, ( tip, all you need the line to do is pull from the windward side of the traveller, the rig load, + gravity of the tack you are on stops travel the other way :-) ) so if another emergency arises, just put the stoppers into play, from the outside in, they should fix any "trim" with the rig vs rudder angle, so all one has to do is anchor the block to the car. ( even a "boom preventer", or two! rigged from the toe-boards of the boat can fulfill this function) .

Your innovation, creativity and ability to manage stress suggests a great deal of self discipline and maturity. The rewards for all of this are great as the wonderful footage in this video reveals. I too hope this is the end of repairs. However, from what I've seen that cycle does not end---- boats are complicated and experience considerable wear and tear it seems. Thank you for another excellent video.

This is SO weird... I was re-watching The Americans (season 5) and saw that one of the main characters, Elizabeth Jennings was reading a book titled, "Space", by James Michener. I had never heard of James, but I like fiction, so I did a little research on him. Today, I started watching this video, your 30th release, and noticed you are (were) reading JAMES MICHENER's "Caribbean"! HOW strange is THAT? Here, I'd never heard of the guy and suddenly there's two references in two days! Bizarre. I thought I would share that with you. Maybe you'll never see this comment, but hopefully you do! Love your content. You are intelligent, resourceful, strong, brave, eloquent and funny. I'm going to binge-watch all your videos! I got hooked by watching the latest episode, "Nine days alone: Final push to Australia". You are awesome!

Well since you have a wooden noggin you’ll never sink, so that’s a plus. After all Safety First. My noggin is also wooden but I like to wear a life jacket on occasion anyway. Redundancy is key to survival out there. I have an old sextant I’d be happy to donate if i knew how to forward it to a future port of call. It came off a Maine maritime academy training ship apparently and I acquired it from one of its graduates long ago and now spends its days roasting in a blazing hot garage. It needs a worthy floating home. And that darn main sheet traveler system needs to be replaced. Just my opinion. Your positive approach to tackling the problem is inspiring though and the fix using available parts looks good. Nice job. Anyway, glad your ducking south out of hurricane alley. BTW your “killing it” with these fun high spirited solo sailor girl videos! Keep smiling and cheers to you.

you need to get yourself some threadlocking fluid and apply a drop or two on those screws that are susceptible to loose themselves. I have been using it on my motorcycle for years and works like charm. A small box of spare nuts and bolts is advisable, too.

Hi Holly. Lots of folks giving advice, and that's good. I'm going to express my concern on the worn traveler car itself. We see major corrosion on the aluminium frame, thus you are at risk of total failure at the worst time, the traveler exploding under load during a storm. Best to replace this, the car likely original. Enjoy the shows!

Just a suggestion. You might want to go through your boat and access its strengths and weaknesses. Then put together a kit of spares and tools needed to address any issues should they come up. I see people drive old cars without even a good spare tire. I put together a break down kit that goes in my trunk to cover the basics, like a tire repair kit, small air pump, bright flashlight, jumper cables, empty gas can that can be used for water or gas, spare bulbs, small first aid kit, and basic tools. I have done the same for my boats. That way should something occur, I have a much better chance of adjusting to the calamity.

Easy just take the roller off and put bolts up into the staple the other way is find a 2 inch pipe clamp to go into the end holes , then all can afix the the clamp hoop the track pulleys and the main will allways go to the top , wich if you think about it is better , use 3/8 clamp cauge 4 nuts 1 ontop and 1 under neath so it’s just a hoop simple that rope fix is just giving you 2 or 3 hundred pounds and will break
@omegamanprivate71325 жыл бұрын
Kolman offers good advice. I wonder if you can find a harbor freight or one of its rivals. Cheap bolts and tools. Consider a fuel stabilizer for your diesel. Consider carrying a big assisted opening folding knife. That way there will be a blood trail if someone abducts you. Have a noncreepy day.
