Good job. I changed a few starter motors -- not many, but enough to have learned that the locational requirements for starter motors on infernal combusion en-jines requires them to be out of reach, at the back and blocked by a wholebuncha other stuff, with at least one bolt impossible to turn with any wrench known to mortal man or woman. Now you're not a noob any more. You've joined the ranks of starter motor fixer haters. It's a big group. Way to go. Peace be on you.

I had this exact motor when I was a boat bum in the 80's on my Miura! I was a sailing boy, and new to, and terrified of, Donks. I was taught by a nice cruiser Pelican Pete (24' home built draft dodging square rigger) back in the 80's...I gave it the Jabsco impeller, clean air/fuel/water .....and I NEVER TOUCHED it in 8 years....and hand-cranked it all the time. I had a 2 blade old fashioned folding prop and could manage 3 knots tops with tailwind downhill! The day I sold this boat, (brilliant boats for aspirant boat-bums, land rover of the ocean) after 8 years and 1000's miles, it fired right up, and with a tear in my eye, I watched the Bukh sail away with my youth....I really love vicariously reliving my 20's through your excellent production. Thanks, sincerely.

I'm pretty sure you have a DV10. It has 1 cylinder and the air intake is on the front. The DV20 has air intake on the side and two cylinders. And these Grinde boats normally had the DV10 unless you have the Super Deluxe version somewhow :D This will also explain why your boat is kinda slow since it has around 8-10hp.

We had the 2cyl 20hp engine on my dad's boat. We used to try hand-cranking it just for fun. I could only get it to fire when it was already warmed up. When it was cold, we'd give up, haha. Even on the starter that thing was cold blooded. My dad used to joke it would be less effort to jump off the boat and push it along by swimming.
@williambunting8034 жыл бұрын
Fabulous resilience! You are very lucky to have a hand crankable engine. I had that on my first boat’s Lister 2 cylinder diesel and used it several times when the battery was too weak to crank the engine. Also performing the yacht yoga to squeeze into weird places means several weeks of after muscle pain for us older boaties. Well done on the starter motor repair, you did that like an expert, you even used all of the correct true tradie expletives!

Hi great job there , you can use a wire or a pair of pliers to short the solenoid to start an engine .. most sailors just replace a starter when the brushes wear , sailing off grid usually means delving into said starter , it’s a good idea to keep your brushes cleaned and never let them wear to the limit as it usually destroys the armature and commutator rendering the motor unserviceable.. a wholly deserved win on this repair , I’m an electrician with 25 years exp mostly marine any questions you have I would be happy to help

When I started working on motors and vehicles, we didn't have these neat smart phones with cameras so I came up with the bright idea of using a Polaroid camera just for the shop. Now I just use the heck out of my smart phones camera to do it. I had a truck with a starter that had wires almost impossible to gain access to without disassembling the right front swing arm, so after the first try, I went ahead and took it all apart and just lengthened the wires by making a longer main batt wire and used quick connects for the other wires and made it so all I have to do it simply pull the 2 bolts, drop the starter, and disconnect the wires while under the truck. Might be something to look into for your boat because I promise you, sometime in the future you will have to pull it again
