Since the radio has Bluetooth capability It should be fairly simple to add text messaging via radio to their app. Or data transmission in general.

I just picked up TIDRADIO UV 5R ( I think) It's like the Baefeng UV 5R.

Switching mode is essentially a factory reset, which wipes and re-writes the firmware. This is not something you should do often if you want to decrease the chances of turning your radio into a paper weight. PTT+# unlocks everything.

I noticed when switching modes you end up losing your programming information, and you will no longer see all the frequencies you previously programmed into the radio. So all you'll have to do is re-upload your code plug (programming information) from CHIRP, or Odmaster.

I'm completely new to radio. I'm getting one for a specific purpose that GMRS will work for, but I can see myself getting an amateur license. When I say new, I had to look up what a code plug is. I could buy the GMRS version of the radio, but my understanding is that it is only half as powerful, and nowhere have I been able to find out if the GMRS version can change bands the way the amateur version can. So, if I get this and switch it to GMRS only, you said I'd need to reinstall the code plug. Would that include the preprogrammed GMRS channels, and could I do that with the app?

I haven't experimented with the GMRS version, so I'm not sure if you can switch from GMRS to the amateur radio bands. I'm assuming you can't and that version is restricted to GMRS frequencies only, but I don't know for sure. If you go with the version that I demoed in the video, you can just run it in the GMRS mode if that's what you're looking to do. Regarding reinstalling the programming information (Code Plug), yes if you switch between modes then it erases the programming information you had saved and you'll need to reinstall your code plug. But, reinstalling it isn't that big of a deal because ideally you'll already have it saved on your phone or computer and all you need to do is transfer the data to the radio. You can either install the code plug with a software called CHIRP or with the Odmaster app.

I tried doing what you said to change from gmrs to ham or unlock, but I have a problem. When I change to ham, when I try to use odmaster it tells me I need to update firmware, and same with unlock and will only get channel 1on unlock, can't change to any other channel. Just wondering if you had the same problem and if you tried to use the app? Just bought this about a week ago.

I haven't run into that issue. I've successfully used both CHIRP and Odmaster to program the radio. You may want to see if there is an update for the Odmaster app and re-attempt to program it. If that doesn't work then see if CHIRP works. If neither work, then I would reach out to their support, and see if they can help troubleshoot.
