Thanks for the nice videos..i have a proken e39 98 metal sunroof.. searched alot to see how can i pop it out to restore broken pieces but all vudeos are for glass sunroof.. my headliner doesnt slide back by hand even after tilting fown the back of the metal sunroof..how to get sccess to repaire?? Ill be very gratrfull.

I just did my headliner too. I would find some quality headliner cloth (it has a foam backing on it) and complete replace the old one. Make sure you use permatex Headliner glue. It is made specifically for headliners. The problem with trying to salvage like you did is that you are gluing onto the old foam and not onto the headliner board. It will sag again soon. (I previously tried saving the edges of my headliner and a few months later it took a big dump and bubbled). Total cost ~$60

I got to the end of this amazing video tutorial, and found that you have a coupe. I have found someone with a coupe cassette for cheap, and I wonder if the parts are interchangeable between the two cassettes, since it would be better than buying each of the four or five broken pieces in my 92 325i sedan's cassette. Is it similar, or a different animal entirely?

Think they may be stuck? The roof does move all the way back nornall in open mode. Can the tilt arm sliders be serviced/oiled in the car and not take the whole assembly out?

Rebuilding a 96 328i, the sunroof panel had every part and cable broke so I have replaced all the parts but had no reference to set up. Can you tell me the initial location for the cable tabs. You stated the inner rail cable tab, driver side connect to the sliding rail extension which drives the inner panel. Is the inner panel insert in the all the way closed position during initial setup? What is the location of the outer rail cable tab? Is the right side lifting arm supposed to have a little play at the pivot? Right has play but left is held tight to the rail and cannot be pulled up at all.

i thought that i had to remove the whole cassette since the torx screws ar located exactly under the roof panel. thanks for your reply!

Not to bring this back from the dead but I had to remove my moonroof cassette this weekend on one of my 318tis. I swapped in the cassette from one of my other good working cars. The route cause of why mine stopped working was that when the headliner was redone the person used way too thick of material on the interior shuttle and also wrapped it completely around it. If you notice on a factory shuttle it is cut back about an inch on each side where the rails slide against it. On 318ti where the moonroof blew up there was way too much fabric I've discovered that bound it up. Luckily it looks like nothing but the bowden cables broke on this cassette. How do you remove the bowden cables?

I need to replace my base model 2006 CLS500 w219 sunroof,. the glass is broken. I saw a forum that says you don't have to remove the headliner and the other says you have to. I have a replacement. Do you have any idea? Thanks in advance.

hi bro, 1st of all thank you for the video! i have a tiny problem on my sunroof, i have the front piece of metal (the 1 that gets up like a spoiler when you open / slide the sunroof) rusted and in need of a change. i know i have to remove the whole cassette to detach that piece (2 left & 2 right visible torx), my issue is i found an e36 sedan (mine is compact) do you think it is compatible? measurements are the same but mine got holes along it and the 1 i saw is a 1 piece metal with no holes.

normaly open mode, there is no covering on the sunroof so maybe something is jammed in the back of the track. I will have to pull it apart, thankfully I now get to redo my headliner

probably the tilt arm sliders are broken maybe. the head liner should crack back about 1/4 way when the sunroof tilts normally. You have to remove the sunroof top and inspect the sliders from the top of the car.

When I replaced my lifters I must have moved the track (with the motor out) and now the motor stops in the wrong positions. Any tips on how to fix this? The sunroof is installed in the car and I really don't want to take it back out!

Normally or in tilt mode? Normally it should go full back. if not something is binding. Could be dirt in the track, or if the fabric is loose on the shuttle it could be that.

So, i have a 1998 328I and my sunroof seems to just have no power at all. the switch lights up and dims but no motor movement. ive checked the fuses and the windows work so i don't know where else to look. i know for a fact the motor is fine.

when you take the old headliner cloth off, you have to scrub away all the old foam with a wire brush so you get down to the bare headliner board. You already know how to remove the headliner so its easy (I took mine out in 12 minutes). When you reglue the headliner let it sit for 24hrs off the car to cure before you flip it upside down. Take your time and glue small 1.5 ft stripes at a time and it will come out with no wrinkles. Dont try to glue it all at one go.

yes they are all the same. You can check real OEM for part number though. good luck. I think you can replace this without removing the entire sunroof casette.

You can lift the top metal cover from the top of the car without having to take the headliner and entire cassette out of the car. I would do that and inspect the sliders.

confirm you dont have a bad switch. Swap the switch with another one if you can. Find one at a junk yard, ~$5.

Hmmm.....could be something binding on the rear stop or rear links. It's hard for me to say. Maybe the bowden cable has gone bad. Looks like someone is taking their sunroof off the car.

No, just retract the sun roof fully and replace it from the top of the car. You should have access. IIRC.
