M5 E60 after 03/2007 have 2 oil plugs, older ones only one. On the older ones you will not get all oil out. Its important that the car is totally level (not only on 2 jack stands) and the car has to run 1min bevor draining the oil out. During this time a pump will suck out the oil from the 2nd oil pan and pump it where you can release it. On newer cars after 03/2007 you have a second oil plug in the front of the car. Its in front of the steering rack, and both of them have to be removed for a proper oil change. Both screws need to be tightened with 25Nm. Oil filter drain plug 10Nm and the oilfilter itself 18Nm.

Beautiful car! That S85 (and S65) is a Rolex among engines-obsolete now by every metric, and yet built with such craft, and with such a beguiling character about the way it works, sounds, and does its job, that it is a breathtakingly beautiful work of engineering art.

Look up Troy jeup he fixes those cars for a living and get M5 shipped from Europe with issues.

Hello E39 Source, Thank you for a great video that includes torque specs for this oil change. No finishing my oil change on an 08 (2 pan plugs).....needed torque values. FYI: 2nd crush washer is for later models with 2nd drain plug at front of oil pan. Cheers! Mr. P
@vahanghazarian88736 ай бұрын
The second copper crush washer is for later models, that had TWO bolts on the oil pan. The oil pan on these engines had a baffle, to stop oil from splashing around during acceleration/deceleration, and cornering. The Baffle in the oil pan also stopped the oil from fully being drained during oil changes. Thus, during the later model years, they placed another oil plug. One on one side of the oil pan and the other, on the other side of the baffle wall.

Look at what Exotic Car Play Place has learned about oil viscosity in S-85 and S-65 engines. He has found that the 10w/60 is too heavy for these engines as the internal tolerances are much too tight. This is a major part of why the rodbearings and VANOS pumps fail. BMW also seems to have finally figured it out, since they are now using (if I remember correctly) 0w/40 oil in the F90 M5.

hey what's up? So I'm actually in the market for in e60 m5 but have concerns about the rod bearing issues. I don't want to buy one and then have to deal with a blown car lmao I'm only 19 and wont have money for an engine, but anyways if you could please tell me anything that would help it would be much appreciated! p.s I subbed
@E39Source7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the sub! On an E60, I would consider them a regular wearable part that needs to be serviced. I would recommend replacing them before 100k miles, and doing oil analysis tests at each oil change (7,500 miles). Otherwise, there is always a risk of failure. My dad is selling his 2006 E60 M5 currently. It has 83,000 miles and is located in San Diego. Please reference one of our videos from this past July where I do a full walk-around of the car.

@alexmartinez2806 жыл бұрын
Ali Awad E60 M5 was a $100k car new so parts and maintenance will reflect that. At your age you should be looking a cheaper, smaller and way less power to work on your driving skills and not using high power to actually allow you to hide bad skills and never improve. Many great BMW cars like 330i ZHP that would be fantastic for you. My first was e30 325 from 1989. I loved that car and learned how to really work on BMWs, also the price to maintain one properly. BMW must stay on maintenance schedule and are not drive until something breaks kind of cars. A cheap BMW price is almost never a good idea so try and by from an enthusiast or someone who provides a good service history.

Find one with low mileage and a superb maintenance history, If the car doesn't have oil changes on record less then 5K mile intervals don't buy it. Unless it has had it's rod bearing replaced at least once. I only bought mine because it had less then 50K miles and the carfax showed oil changes every 3K miles. I paid $17.5K US for mine,

I do not prefer Mann filters. My stepmothers E92 328i had straight 40 oil with the Mann filter and after 500 miles the O ring started leaking. Moly or Bosch is the way to go!

@E39Source6 жыл бұрын
Why would we do that?
@chadjones996 жыл бұрын
E39Source I hear it helps with the rod bearing issue in these cars. The 60 weight is not leaving the bearing race and heats up and starves the oil supply to the rod bearings ???
@E39Source6 жыл бұрын
That seems extremely light though, which could compromise the VANOS system. The rod bearing issue is an engine design failure, not a function of heavy oil. You're best to just replace the rod bearings every 75,000 miles.

@itshappening1006 жыл бұрын
they say 10w50 is better, although not officially recommended
@iPhoneAppReviewer6 жыл бұрын
Martin Zvarík 5w50 is the best. I’m pretty sure the whole reason for the notorious rod bearing failure is the fact that these cars were spec’d with such a thick oil. For example, the LS7 has a tighter rod bearing clearance than the S85 but yet there isn’t a rod bearing issue with those engines and they’re running much thinner oil.
