Fascinating. But then I'm a very technical & detail-oriented man. I've never owned a BMW but recently I'm really warming toward late-90s E38 & E39 4.4L v8s. I mostly owned Mercedes cars in the '90s & '00s.

Looks very nice with or without the front plate & with silver lines instead of black. Its design is smooth forreal & with S65 rims its undefeated. A push start & M3 comp steering wheel & that thing is perfection. My question is which is better the black or silver grill? & is that a black grill with silver trim?

Hi! What wil happen if i'll put the sunroof in vent mod manually before installing the motor instead of cranking? Those railings kinda move quite easy by hand. Thanks!
@E39Source
@E39Source 4 күн бұрын
I'd have to check TIS to see if there is an installation position for the motor. It might be okay if you immediately follow the initialization procedure for the motor. There's also a chance that initializing the motor in the vent position over-stresses the vent guides which could cause damage.
@Alexander25C

@@E39Source Well i tried and it worked but intializing the motor didn't work. The sunroof didn't open completely, it tilted on the right side and it was a pain in the ass to unistall it. It messed up my entire work done today. Luckily it didn't break any plastics, but i'm worried about the noise made by that thing inside the casette that moves the rails. I hope that it didn't break or stretch. I decided to disassemble the entire casette. Can't find a new one Romania and i believe that it would cost 2.5-3k euro judging by the cost of spare parts. At that price it's not worth it. I paid 7k for the entire car in 2017 and invested another couple k in oem parts.

@@Alexander25C The sunroofs are a real pain unfortunately. I generally end up tearing them down almost completely and building it out on the shop floor.

@@E39Source Hi mate! Had to disasemble the whole thing today. After yesterday's failure, one of the rails was falling behind the second one. Now it looks ok. Have a question, did you calibrate the sunroof in the vent position or did you crank it back to closed? After 2 failures i'm kinda afraid to push the button.
@E39Source

@@Alexander25C I believe I calibrated it from the fully closed position.

When you hand thread those 3 screws into the latch, you didn't use a tap first, you literally just used a ratchet spanner or similar and drove them? Feels like it would be easier to do it on the workbench, then remove the bolts, then reinstall them on the cross member. I assume just using a drill driver to ram them in is a no-no. Seems odd not to just manufacture a thread on them.
@E39Source
@E39Source 5 күн бұрын
No tap is needed, the metal is soft. I installed them and then screwed the screws in on the vehicle just trying to keep them as straight as possible.

Don’t forget to remove the headlight washer covers before removing the bumper! Made this mistake and snapped one. Also gotta be careful if you have front parking sensors and pull the bumper off a little and then remove these.

Hello, I’ve got a question. After the whole work, is there needed to be coded something, if I done the similar rewire as you?
@E39Source
@E39Source 5 күн бұрын
Yes, coding of the LMA module is required. If the LMA is replaced, it must also have the VO written to it.

I’ve installed everything as you did. One headlight is fully working, but on the other headlight doesn’t work the angel eyes, I tried to put the other headlight which doesn’t work to the other side adapter, and it worked. So, is there a problem in wirings or it is like that because I haven’t coded them yet?

Hi Ryan, for my previous query, I read the subsequent comments and sort of got an idea of the cost of the repair. I have an ‘02 LMB that I would love for your shop to work on. I am the 2nd owner, acquired it in 2011 with 50k miles. It now has 63k miles. Drive it only in the summers here in Vancouver for obvious reasons. What it needs in repairs are missing pixels on the instrument cluster, driver’s seat “twist” and some weatherstripping refresh plus whatever mechanical service it requires at this mileage level. What I want on top of that is a BBK upgrade and a suspension linkage refresh. I installed PSS coil overs, a Corsa cat back exhaust and AFE cold air intake. How much time do you think will it take and what is your garage schedule these days? I am contemplating driving down there from Vancouver late spring/ early summer. Ordered a Bluebus from you a few years ago. Thanks for that.

I'm unable to share the specific investment that this client made in his M5, but our restoration services have spanned from ~$5,000-$70,000 over the past several years. No two cars are alike, and parts prices change by the hour.

If I get reincarnated as a car I want the family that owns this one (or Ryan) to buy me. Ryan, maybe I've missed it on your prior videos, but for those of us who have to live with a sunroof, how do you suggest we maintain them? I suppose they should be used periodically and lubed, but with what, how often and where?
@E39Source
@E39Source 7 күн бұрын
You know what- I've never lubed my sunroofs. I tried to use them at least a few times a year just to exercise the mechanism, but I imagine they'll all fail eventually. It's the plastic vent guides that usually go. They are replaceable, but it's a lot of work. A bit of grease in chain drive is probably a good idea to reduce strain on the motor. The motor has a plastic drive gear which commonly cracks.

I noticed a few things that are different on this car compared to my October of 97' 540i. My car has the later style center console, temperature control for the rear passengers, a storage cubby instead of the rear cup holders, wolf whistle instead of the chirp, no washer float level, and the cruise control is all on the steering wheel, meaning the 0 button becomes I/O. Likely all a combination of my car being an early 98MY, V8 car, different options, Canadian market, and maybe some retrofits. Makes me curious how many changes BMW made throughout the E39's production run.
@E39Source
@E39Source 7 күн бұрын
Thanks for the info here! I'm fascinated with all of these subtle changes too. It'd be pretty impossible to map every single change because of how many factors there are (production date, options, packages, country it was originally sold in, etc etc.

its possible to fix a 5 speed manual? how about a six speed manual transmission, is it also fixable?
@E39Source
@E39Source 7 күн бұрын
Anything is possible, but not per BMW TIS. ZF/Getrag parts are not sold separately when it comes to the gear set or integral internals. Usually the 'fix' involves removing heavily worn or failed parts and replacing them with used parts from donor transmissions.
@RPDBY
@RPDBY 6 күн бұрын
@E39Source it's very sad, because we will run out of used parts very soon... I have a 2000 540i with a manual, the third gear sometimes doesn't engage smoothly and makes a grinding noise, other times it's perfect. I've read that these gearboxes are not fixable, and i guess that's what people mean, ie can't make it like new with new parts
