Thank you for the video. Do you think the original alternator need to be replaced even when it works fine at the moment? I have a 2006 BMW M5 V10- third gear engine malfunction and I think it might be the alternator that is part of this problem. Thank you. ISTA has a code 002788 and code 0027D0 DME: Fuel pressure, setpoint/actual-valve comparison at maximum pressure DME: Fuel-pressure control adaptation

So I love the E39 M5. Any experience or familiarity with the E39 platform and LS engines swaps? Equal amount of money after all said and done as an M5 or a complete money pit of an idea to try.

It's been done before, but it's never something I would ever attempt or recommend. Sure the LS is cheap and powerful, but that's not what the E39 M5 is about. I think the S62 makes the M5 an M5.

Quick question - Since all we're trying to resolve here is wind noise due to a deteriorating rubber seal, why cant we just scrap off the breaking down rubber seal and use some sort of black color vehicle-grade silicon / caulk to replace this rubber seal? i know it's not stock, but can save a ton of work
@E39Source
@E39Source 13 күн бұрын
That could definitely save a lot of effort, and I've seen it done before. But it's a 1/2 you-know-what solution to the problem; seal replacement is the proper factory solution. The primary concerns of a deteriorated seal are only cosmetic appearance and maybe some wind noise, so I figure folks who are concerned about this may be willing to put in the time to fix it right.
@mule666
@mule666 13 күн бұрын
Caulk can also deteriorate fast..ever try to remove caulk? Better keep it original
@blancA4blanc
@blancA4blanc 13 күн бұрын
@@mule666 I would assume car industry would have a proper caulk/ silicon that can withstand time and elements, wasn't talking about a 4$ tube from HD, but my bigger point is that in order to solve this specific functional problem (possible wind noise) it may be an easier and more applicable solution. coming from an engineering background, you always consider the possible risk vs. possible gain from something. Here, the procedure is so involving and so risky to so many parts (just imagine bending the inner / outer window trim pieces, not to talk about the brittle rear shades) for a gain that is questionable. i agree that for a 100% factory solution, this would be the way to go, but - 1. Would you even consider paying more for a car that has that addresses (vs a car that have its TCG and RB done, for instance?) 2. Would the gain (less wind noise) be worth the risk of hunting new window trim pieces? and to clarify - by any means, this has no intention to put Ryan's guides in any bad light. this whole discussion is thank to this wonderful how-to guides that E39Source are producing.

Ryan why 2 identical pumps for the windshield washer fluid… and what is the function of the pump in the engine?… thanks
@E39Source
@E39Source 13 күн бұрын
There are three pumps on North American-spec E39 M5s (which have the cold weather package). 1 under the hood in the small reservoir for intensive washing. This is the button at the end of the wiper stalk, you could put a more aggressive cleaning agent in there to really cut through bugs/grime. Then one in the primary reservoir for normal windshield washing. The last one is the largest one for the headlight washers.

Works the same in an E90 :) Thanks. I found out that a better way is to start by putting the seams together and then snake each side up the door frames. That way you can see where there is too much slack since the seal bulges. I also couldn't get the little plastic rivets out from the car frame with pliers without breaking them, so I looped steel wire through them (there was a hole in them that you can fit the wire through) and pulled on the wire with pliers. You could also use some type of hook tool.

Hello. I wanted to ask if it's possible to install a steering wheel with a dual-stage airbag on an old E39. I plan to install that steering wheel and am prepared to sacrifice the airbag functionality.
@E39Source
@E39Source 23 күн бұрын
The dual stage airbags came in from May, 1999. If your E39 is earlier than that, you'll need to replace the clock spring, signal stalks, airbag module, and possibly modify the wiring. I absolutely don't recommend disabling the airbag.

Hey Ryan - pinged you on BMW E60 M5 conversion video - so i take it you used a 6 spd E9x M3 S65 gearbox with with the FCP conversion kit for the M6. Q - aside from the longer drive shaft of the M5 and different software update for the M6, do you know if the 6 speed of an M5, linkages and all bits fit M6? Does year make a difference? Much appreciate your awesome content and feedback. cheers
@E39Source
@E39Source 23 күн бұрын
Hello! I no longer use the FCP conversion kit; I work out of my own custom parts list using multiple suppliers. The transmission, shifter linkage, and pedal hardware is all the same between the M5 and M6. The only differences are the interior trims/shift knob, driveshaft, and DME software version. No difference between model years on the M6.

Great video. Here’s a weird question for you, or anyone who might know. I’m mid way through doing the job on my 1998 E31 840Ci Sport. I have owned this car for nearly 20 years and it only has 27K miles on the clock. I’m pretty sure no one has been into this engine before. I have made a weird discovery! On every single one of my Oil Spray bars there is only ONE nut holding the down. On every single one this is the very FRONT nut. The other studs that the bars sit on have no nuts! So they can lift a bit with just your finger. I had figured this must be ‘normal’ and how they are meant to, given the above. However, I then saw in your video that your four spray bars have nuts on EVERY single threaded post holding the spray bars down. You have 16 nuts, whereas I only have 4…..I don’t think my engine has been opened before. I’m totally confused! Any ideas? TIA

@@E39SourceAh! I’ve now figured out what it was….It was ME! LOL I had inadvertently removed them myself as I was taking the covers off because it’s possible to remove them through the holes in cover once the top fixings and black rubber grommets are removed. I thought they were part of what was holding the cover on. DUH! Of course, now I realise that I didn’t need to and shouldn’t have removed them. I was so sure this engine has definitely never been opened. Thanks again. P.S now near the stage of seating the gaskets and covers again. Done a couple of dummy runs on one side without any sealant in the places you suggest to see how it sits. Unfortunately, it seems like another nightmare coming up because on the E31 there is zero visibility to those half-moons and can barely feel them with a hand! Each time so far I can feel they’re not right! 😠
