Few years ago I had BMW 530D E60. Before we tuned it we measured on dyno to be 158kw. After they were finished with tuning it was doing 205kw and it was all done electronically without any hardware updates. I don't know what they did but after leaving tuning shop and trying to jump green light that was blinking the power change was VERY noticeable. It was a bit wet, I was doing like 40km/h and as soon as I floored it the wheels span. I remember after tuning if I was doing 100km/ha and floored for over-take the speed would just keep climbing at insane rate. Once was over taking 3 trucks at onnce and by the time it took me to overtake the last one I was doing 160km/ha. Before the tuning maximum top speed that I've reached was 235km/ha, after the tunning it was 260km/ha but that was the limit of the speedometer.
@BigUriel2 жыл бұрын
What they did was increase boost pressure and the amount of fuel injected, it's fairly straightforward. Most turbocharged cars can make some 20-30% more power with the stock components than they are programmed to do, because they are tuned for efficiency rather than maximum performance, plus safety margins.
@jonosterman28782 жыл бұрын
@@BigUriel that’s not entirely true. Usually the way you up the boost is by switching to e85, and because it runs cooler while maintaining a good octane number, you can increase boost by like 30-40% without doing anything else. But you can’t run e85 unless you have larger injectors and fuel pump, because the energy density of e85 is about 30% lower than pump gas, so you need to spray that much more fuel and run a different AfR. I did this to my LGT and went from 12 psi peak to 16.7psi peak, and gained about 35hp and 30lbft. But make sure you get a dyno tune by a pro. I just had Cameron Dawes help me with a tune I was doing myself, and because he didn’t do it all himself on a dyno, it wasn’t refined, and I ended up having to put my stock pump back in, and I should have adjusted the tune for that, but didn’t, and it ran lean for too long and I bent a valve and ruined a piston, and had to get a rebuild that cost $4k. So be careful with this shit. Don’t cut corners like I did.

Either the pump was already shit from the factory or the tune made it crack. My mechanic was not sure about it. Just bad luck probably. No problems since it got fixed. Had to change the front tyres and breaking pads after 30k kms but that was to be expected. Till the engine hits the right temperature I'll barely go above 2000 rpm. I always put 98 octan benzine in it and because of all the horror story s I regular check my oil level but so far around every 10k kms it needs to have a little bit. I think around 2L so far.

It depends on the OEM and how overbuilt they made their product. Modern Toyota trucks (and some of their cars) are a great example of being over engineered for long term reliability, and having a great starting point for mods. The Can. version of the Tacoma has the same frame strength as a Dodge/GMC/Ford 1/2ton, so it can take massive suspension, tire size, and engine upgrades without a problem.

Older cars are very bad in tuning. How to tune my 3l le baron from 1990. its not possible without doing way to much
@marcwolbert68286 жыл бұрын
OEMs don't tune for absolute max performance. They tune for best fuel economy, engine durability beyond a warranted mileage, and to meet EPA / CARB regulations. On boosted vehicles with minimal hardware mods, HUGE gains are possible with a tune. Gas and diesel, boosted 25-100+ more hp/ tq is a possibility.

I can confirm that an aftermarket ECU system can increase both performance and economy in a turbocharged car. My 2009 VW Tiguan 4motion TSI made 125kw (167hp) and 280Nm (207ft-lbs) from the factory. Last month I had it fitted with an APR ECU and air filter system for around $1,000AUD, and it now makes 175kw (235hp) and 340Nm (251ft-lbs), as well as a significantly better fuel economy. It has a slightly heavier duty clutch to handle the power increase, but it is well worth the money. It's my daily driver so I don't need huge power, but the car is more fun to drive, has better throttle response and better fuel economy. It's not a cheap mod, considering in a lot of cars you'll need a new clutch, and in some cases new injectors and fuel pumps, but if you find a system from a good brand that offers warranty and delivers proof, I'd say it's the best value for money mod there is.

Just one thing - Upping the boost on a turbo car is definitely a way you can get an easy 25-30 HP out of modern car. Will it be completely safe and reliable? Depends on the car, but most "stage 1" tunes are still fairly conservative, just not as conservative as what was put out by the manufacturer. My Mini runs around 12 pounds of boost, 14 overboost for 10 seconds if I pin the throttle. A tune can up that to around 18-19 without the need for any supporting mods, and the gains are there.

no no no it`s totally different. For overclocking u just increase the clock speed and pray for nothing goes wrong. For tuning, it`s a function of multiple variables, and more fuel or air doesn't always mean more power. It`s much more complex.
@venox9685 жыл бұрын
@@jeffma7202 Obviously you don't know much about PC overclocking. It's very similar in context you're playing with a lot of variables and try to tweak things to have best performance on lowest power consumption possible. There's a lot to balance and you need to do a lot of tests to see system stability. Like variable voltage range, variable frequency range, FSB multiplier, adjusting cooling fans curves, ram timings, ram voltage etc.
@jeffma72025 жыл бұрын
sry I'm an electrical engineer and I`ve worked in FSAE club in engine mapping. What you said is partially correct, yet all those variables are directly correlated with [clock speed] and are [INDEPENDENT]. for CPU and RAM [Voltage], they increase as a [function of frequency] that relates to the MOSFET characteristic, in a simple way, increase Vgs provides a higher i/V ratio for Mosfet, resulting a less wait time needed between clk cycle. Cooling are just [More is better], or using a simple proportional conrtol to keep under a temperature. Motherboards normally provides efficient built-in tools for overclock safety as well. For ENGINE, it`s totally different. Desired throttle have a positive and relatively linear correlation with the torque output. Tunable input includes (intake opening, fuel injection, and ignition timing) These variables influences each other, while they are mapped onto a graph of (throttle position, RPM, and oxygen sensor) chart.(simpler ecu use 2 instead). Here you get a fuction of 6 dimensions, and adjusting any point on the map would influence its neighboring points, and poor tuning may result in engine stocking at the certain scenario, either due to too lean or rich, or poor timing. Cooling on the engine are more curcial than CPU. Engine operation is directly correlated with the temperature, much more than CPU does, and relates to the whole mapping. I still know far too little about IC engine but hope this would help.

I had two 15s in the trunk with a trapezoidal enclosure facing outwards, and Sony Xplod head units. I had a flip out 7-inch in the dash which fit almost perfectly in contrast to the 10in speakers in the headrests that required all new headrests that were twice as big and comically huge, running from under the seat power supplies that I had routed through the Upholstery and coming out the bottom. Had spent quite some time deciding whether or not to install vertical lift or Lambo style doors along with neon but hit a snag when it unfortunately stopped running because of electrical failure, which became mechanical when the engine block was found to be cracked and leaking on the alternator. God I miss that car but now I'm a Honda boy with an accord that unfortunately has been rear-ended for a fourth time... now I've given up trying to fix it, with the quarter panel caved in and devise some kind of wide body and go to the VIP route like I wanted when I first got it.

So basically any time you add a mod like headers, an new exhaust you’ll need to tune the car?
@saifkoko6 жыл бұрын
yes to get the peak performance from the hardware you upgraded
@RoninDusette6 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. It depends on how restrictive your exhaust is. On, say, an Integra Type-R, they are already running a factory tuned, race-inspired 2.5 inch exhaust all of the way back with headers from the factory. Changing it will make it sound different, and without going full resonator and cat delete will likely not give you much, even with a tune. BUT, say you have, idunno, a brand new turbocharged Hyundai... Those come with at least 2 or 3 cats; one in the downpipe, one mid chassis, and likely another (depending on the company). Removing those restrictions (which are VERY restrictive), and dumping a tune into that.... yeah. You will absolutely notice a difference. Results will vary, but you need to be able to move a lot of air to make use of it. Internal combustion engines are, for lack of a better term, big ass air pumps. They just use explosions to do it, and then connect the bottom of the pump to the wheels through a transmission that "transmits the power to them. (I know it sounds silly, but that is pretty much what a 4-cycle engine does). The bigger the bang, the bigger the gain. You just have to find the sweet spot for what you have. If you are already running a high-compression engine (if it says premium only on your fuel cover and you are not boosted, like a Corvette or Civic Type-R or whatever), then you will see good gains the more you let air/fuel flow in, blow up as powerful as it can, and move it out as quickly as you can, you will boogie. That is why most people do IHE; you are opening up the engine to let it do it's thing. Hence the reason you can get 50HP out of an intake manifold/TB and exhaust on an old 5.0. They were just restricted from the factory. With a turbocharger, you can force more air in, and therefore see bigger gains over just taking in whatever air at whatever height above sea level you are at.. :)
