This is a great teardown I recently change my trans fluid and filter and I found a tooth from the forward drum laying in the pan next to the magnet. The trans is still running good so I’m hoping it stays that way for a while. It was good to see where this tooth comes from.

My goodness, I never realized how many intricate parts were inside a transmission and how many, many interlocked levels of pieces with more pieces, revealing more pieces....holy ****, I was wanting to do a rebuild on my 96's E4OD myself, but now I'm beginning to understand why engine mechanics and transmission specialists are separate shops... Very intimidating stuff, and this gentleman makes it look way too easy. :/

I'm troubleshooting an intermittent upshifting (after 2nd gear) 1996 E40D so I appreciate this video Hiram. I recently found this info on the net & wanted to know if you can confirm it as being true: "To everyone that has a 90's or newer Ford with the E40D transmission. DO NOT Run your truck with the HAZARD lights on. By doing so will cook your transmission. The torque converter lock up solenoid is controlled by your brake lights. Every time they flash they switch the solenoid on/off. By doing that it ends up destroying your transmission!"

Plowing and pulling stumps are other reasons to use manual low. My company bought a brand new Ram 2500 for plowing and they smoked the trans within 2 years. I bought the old plow truck (1995 Bronco 5.8/E4OD) and luckily there's no problems with it yet, but I'll have to keep an eye on it.

Great Video! Just dropped my e4OD from my 93 deisel. It suddenly failed, all gears, Fwd&rev last year, I was Towing a decent loaded trailer, noticed abit of pulsation leaving job site up a small hill @ 10mph.. short while later, was peddal down trying to gain some speed for a bigger hill, near 45mph, heard a "plink" under truck and lost all drive, each fwd (1-2-D-N) and rev(R).. "park" locks rear wheels.. but no other.. dropped trans today.. and while turning small inner input shaft by hand, i get rotation at ouput shaft.. Makes me wonder? did i only toast the TC? fluid not burnt! hmmm? glad to see your vid as it gives a bit of caution, and confidence. Thank you friend! and i welcome thoughtfull input from you and your viewers.

Hiram, you were talking about burn outs that one should start in manual low and go up through the gears which got me to wondering if this trans is in a heavy-duty truck that is doing a lot of hard pulling, aka large loads on the trailer, that the driver might ought to go manually through the gears as well for the same reason. Would I be right?
@jacobhendrickson89355 жыл бұрын
I had no idea manual low was any different than drive from a direct standstill. Wish you could have shown what exactly is different. I do know I’ll never punch it from a stop In drive ever again. I have a 94 E150 5.8L E4 OD and had no idea how many parts there are in this transmission.. WOW

Great video,I was needing a little info. I just purchased 1996 motor home with a E4OD transmission. It has 41,000 miles on it. I changed the fluid and added a transmission fluid for high mileage vehicles with a seal conditioner. Everything look good inside with just normal wear particles on the magnet. It shifts great and no one has ever been in the transmission. Even though it shifts good would you advise pulling it out to have all the internal seals replaced because of it's age or keep running it until I run I have an issue.

do you have any tips for someone that has never rebuilt a transmission before but will be rebuilding an e4od? lost all forward gears in my 95 f150 this summer a few days after the transmission lost most of its fluid out in the bush, and I'm fairly certain it would've caused some irreparable damage so I'm going to be buying another transmission to rebuild. Are there any parts you'd recommend upgrading inside it?

Every once and a wile my e4od does not shift out of first. It may do this a bunch once it does then you might drive it for thousands of miles with no problem. 1-2 shift 10 -12 mph 2-3 20-25 mph 3-4 35 -45 depending on load. I've taken pan off checked all valves and cleaned changed pressure spring.It does have good pressure,and does not throw a code. Do you have any ideas ?Thanks Rick

Sup Hiram, I really like your videos they have gotten me a long ways. I'm still having trouble with mine though. I carried it to a trans mechanic after the rebuild he says it seems to be dragging when you let off the gas. I didnt put the triple spiral snap rings in and didn't update the bearings. I'm thinking it may be one of the snap rings some where has come off, but i'm not sure I was wondering if you can give me any ideas what im suppose to be looking for in this situation. 2 years and counting. It wouldn't be such a pressing issue getting mine fixed but my motor cycle was stolen and now I have nothing to drive at all. Hoping I don't have to go but so far back because most everything in the trans is new. I'm hoping I dont have to change the gaskets, but I guess ill know more when I get it back open again the second time.

I have a 1990 E-150 w/ an E4OD. I get first second and reverse but does not shift into 3rd or 4th with overdrive light on or off. I checked and added more fluid as it was low and had a leak from the previous owner i bought it off of. I've changed the filter and pan gasket. It has a trans cooler at the bottom of the radiator. I want to install an independent trans cooler and put new lines. But what could be causing this issue? I replaced the VSS in the tailshaft because it was broken in two pieces. checked the wiring to the MPS, solenoid pack, and VSS. No damage to the wiring. Anyway i can test the solenoid pack before replacing? Thanks in advanced to anyone's insight!!

I hear ya on whole bullet-proof transmission thing. Several years ago, there was a new car dealership a couple of towns over from where I work that had a transmission rebuilder working for them, and they were offering LIFETIME warranties on transmissions that he rebuilt. Mind you, this was for ANY transmission, not just the transmissions that their particular manufacturer had in their vehicles. Needless to say, they got that a** beat financially pretty quick and quit that deal soon after.

FOUND THE PROBLEM AND I WILL SHARE MY RESULTS! e40d transmission in a 94 3/4 ton pickup. It turned out to be the "transmission rage sensor", also known as the "Neutral Safety Switch". Now I bought a $69 dollar one over the $112 somewhere around price. But I didn't put it on because it would require me to change the wiring to fit the new and cheap versions. So I just cleaned up my stock ones and threw them back together. Turns out, you can get a good amount of gunk in those plugins, especially with an old truck like mine. It makes it lose connective strength. It doesn't shift out of drive and into neutral anymore and hasn't for the past two months. DON'T BUY ANOTHER NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH JUST YET, TRY THIS: Unplug, clean terminals, plug back in, and take it for a test run. I know this is lengthy but please read it. I need suggestions and help. @Automatic Transmission and @Public I need your help with something Automatic Transmission. I have an E40D transmission with a little problem. Whether it be you that guides me to the solution or someone else, I need to get through this. I own a 94' f250 2wd with a 460 big block that has the E40D 4 speed in it. Now to get down to the problem I'm having right off hand. I believe one of my solenoids are bad. Specifically the overdrive solenoid. I'm not locked out of a gear, I have them all. But at any speed it can let out of the gear and go into a neutral state, depending on if I have my foot to the floor it'll rev. It's just temporarily directing the fluid somewhere else and not putting pressure where it needs to go. It's not a slip, it'll do it anywhere around highway speeds. I've done a DIY fluid change last Saturday and haven't experienced the problem yet until today while I was towing. Before I changed the fluid (got 8 quarts in out of 15.7, which is about half) I would experience this problem about 3-16 times a day. Have only experienced it 6 times since the change and I'm hoping it's because of towing a 16 ft trailer of firewood, making it work harder. I'm hoping that it's stuck and that the new fluid will clean it out and make it go back to normal. The other possibilities are that it could be bad, or the computer isn't operating right. I'll tell you why I think that last part is an option as well. I haven't experienced this problem at all until a 30 A fuse blew out in my engine bay. I have 12 side step running board lights in all and it's connected to a hot wire and a switch in the middle. It's spliced into the trailer break's hot wire. I'm wondering if driving my vehicle with the burned fuse did something to the computer which effects the solenoids. I've heard of burned fuses causing major problems before. My friend's truck would run but wouldn't move, they had the engine torn down and rebuilt, and it turned out to be a fuse.

so it would not be easy to convert to manual overdrive through mechanical linkages, but maybe an electric override...
