I'd rather have multiplayer games that are dedicated to being multiplayer, and singleplayer games dedicated to being singleplayer. Focus time and resources on the core experience. If a game can competently do both, then that's great. But let's please not go back to the days where every game was obligated to have both a singleplayer campaign, and a multiplayer mode. I “love” the Stans that will always jump in and defend the micro transaction by saying “but games are so expensive to make these days”. Not all games have to be these massive open world type games that take 5 years or more to make and still come up incomplete. These companies, EA for example, have plenty of single player games that wouldn’t take nearly as long to create but they count on kids that have no respect for money and use their or parent’s credit cards to waste thousands and thousands of dollars on something that doesn’t exist, on a game who’s serves will be shut off sooner then later. Stick with Indy devs that make games for the love of making games and give you a COMPLETE game that’s made with love and creativity instead of just cut and paste.

So I use some kind or other of "hang out software" and play stuff while I chat with my friends,or play stuff with my friends while we chat. Stuff like Monster Hunter is my ideal multiplayer experience, because I can play fully alone or have friends join in on the fun, I can allow or ban random players, I am in full control of how my online experience is going to be. They say it because it is what they want you to believe. It does not matter how bad they sound or how much you mock them. They will keep saying it until you too, are repeating. It is not just in the entertainment industry that you see these tactics used, it's everywhere. And you would be surprised how often it works. Especially with young kids who are exposed to things for the first time and tend to absorb and internalize them. When you package a 6-10 hour campaign with a robust MP, you make the value of the product very high to the buyer. MP only games aren’t worth the purchase because it is a roll of dice with respect to the community. We’ve seen too many of these games get stale or die due to lack of players. That is why having a strong campaign is so important.
@FerralVideo2 жыл бұрын
From an MP-focused perspective, a strong campaign also serves as an extended tutorial and practice opportunity, raising the ideal skill floor for new players joining. This makes the game more enjoyable for all. Newer players are going to be more competent in general, making them more likely to enjoy their first few forays into MP. All players are more likely to have team-mates who are more competent, making everyone more likely to enjoy a given round. And the veterans are more likely to have competent opponents, encouraging them to continue to develop their skill. And from a single player perspective, well, someone like me who doesn't play MP games is more likely to buy the game and enjoy the 6-hour campaign. And who knows, maybe once we've exhausted the SP content, we'll try out the MP? Wherein the above mentioned factors for "newer players" play in. Another benefit is to allow a more relaxed environment while still enjoying the game. A well designed multiplayer matchmaker will always give the player a robust challenge that they cannot reliably overcome. Yes, that's great for the competitive spirit, but what if I don't want a competitive spirit tonight? What if I just want to blow some heads off without getting sniped from across the map? The main flaw here is that single player AI opponents will never be as good as real human opponents, and SOME players will inevitably find themselves severely outclassed and lose interest in the MP after only one or two sessions.
@rylandrc2 жыл бұрын
To be fair, single player games can also be a roll of the die. It's just that when a game has both single and online multiplayer, you essentially get to roll two dice and play the better result.
@parawill70742 жыл бұрын
@@rylandrc - I would counter that by saying that MP games are roll of the dice in today's market. The SP experience is totally different and I think releasing a 6 hour or more campaign along with a couple of game modes for offline solo play and COOP would be fine as a standalone game that could do major business on it's own with fairly priced DLC in the future. Then you would release the competitive MP a few months or a year down the road.

Ea are not artists they are a corporation that sees only $$. They can't fathom how a games story can move someone or a soundtrack can influence a stories emotions felt. They have no initiative to make something that will be remembered(for good reasons). No desire for a game to be talked about no more than a year. No wish for their game to be fun before it profits. All they have done since the begining of their existence is slap their logo on the work of devs, monetize content that used to be or should be base content hindering the enjoyment and adding a single number to the next installment of a game that will be priced at 60$ for a reskin. It disgusts me how much power and influence they have over the quality of modern day games all because they were lucky to be around since near the begining of games and monopolize the industry. Aswell as biggybacking off what the original ea built for them to inherent without lifting a finger. The worst part is how disrespectful they are to the consumers. The ones who through our support r the reason they even are as successful as they were able to be. Sadly it's not even just ea but pretty much every company that built themselves a reputation. I just hope one day all these big triple a studios topple so we can make room for some smaller names that still have passion for their projects and get another decade of games.made with love.

An online game will become dead years down the road when bulk of the players leave, or when they eventually have to shut down the servers. A single player game will retain the original experience no matter when you play it years later. This matters when you have a backlog of games to plough through. A model where you only own a key, a pass, if you will, to say that you have the mere access to the title, rather than a wholesale ownership of the thing you paid in full for.
@stripedrajang35712 жыл бұрын
Correct. But even in the 80's and 90's, videogame companies HATED the concept of gamers "owning" the game. They packaged the license in physical cartridges, and used the word "ownership" to make you "feel" like you own it, and in a way, the gamer did own it, but they didn't want you to know the truth that you didn't really own it, since there was still copyrights and trademarks attached to the physical product. Even now, the physical games you own are basically digital downloads disguised in a physical medium. They can sell you half the game in digital download in a physical copy, and then have you download the other half of the digital download once you attempt to boot up and play the game.

From a business standpoint, here’s the breakdown: Videogame pricing hasn’t really changed much in 20 years… but games are costing wayyyyyy more to make these days. So they have to make the money back somewhere How? “Living” games that rely on micro transactions and subscriptions (battlepasses, etc) to make more profit. A greedy company does one of two things: 1. Double or triple the price of the base game (which obviously wouldn’t work) 2. Add micro transactions and slowly recoup As a single-player gamer myself (and coming from that oldschool era), I haaaaate where gaming has gone. Absolutely hate it, and typically don’t interact with micro transactions very much. But I also get WHY games have become what they are to maximize profits The real problem: gamers support it. If we wouldn’t buy all the extra shit… it wouldn’t be here. But people do. So the problem starts with the developer… but also ends with consumer habits sadly It’ll never change, and will most likely get much worse :/

Videogame makes wayyyyy more money now than it 20-30 years ago and last I checked people working full time at these companies are still living in their cars and sharing apartments with 2-4 other people so there is no way the actual development cost is high for them not a chance , if anything it is marketing that is eating a bigger and bigger part of the a games budget these days and not actual development costs. Hell the "celling" for what a game can make with or without mtrx has NEVER been higher than it is now you just simply need to make a good game hell if you are spending millions and million on you GAME it might actually be very good in the end. Look at Minecraft never in my life have I seen a single ad for it and yet it is one of the most popular games in the world right now. As someone stubborn enough to even play some mmo's solo (the ones that work on my ancient pc or my switch) it does bother me when companies say stupid stuff like that. "Single player games have their place, I'm not suggesting we add death match to Mirror's Edge". ... Funny he should say that. 1.) Mirrors Edge is about the only compelling EA game I've ever played. Great story, great art, great gameplay... I liked it BECAUSE it wasn't a PVP monetized out the @$$ with microtransactions. 2.) Mirror's Edge ISNT a 25 hour fire once and forget game as he puts it. It's also the only EA game I return to and replay regularly, because it's fun, I love the story, and there's nothing else on the market quite like it. It's not the only game like that, I've probably sunk hundreds, if not thousands of hours into replaying the single player campaigns of the Halo series. If a single player experience is good, people return to it. ... He's just mad he can't charge me again and again for every playthrough of Mirror's Edge as an infinite revenue stream, god forbid he be satisfied with the fixed amount of money I paid for it. This is the real reason he wants to gaslight people into disliking single player games, and can anything that doesnt have microtransactions. And why do people accept that as even remotely acceptable logic? You can buy a movie on disk and rewatch it thousands of times. How would you feel if the movie industry tried to force you into pay per view for all content? I mean, people are already getting mad that streaming is slowly turning into cable 2.0 for similar reasons, when the allure of streaming in the first place was cutting the cable. 3.) In the same post, he literally says he has completely stopped greenlighting anything that isnt some form of live service with microtransactions. ... He might as well be literally saying Mirror's Edge no longer has a place in the gaming industry. Oh no, of course they wont mess up a legacy IP of the past... But what they wont do ever again from then on out is dare make the mistake of making a unique, engaging, fun single player experience for the meager cost of 60 dollars on release and nothing else, ever again. ... That kinda undermines the whole "Single player experiences have their place" comment. EA is stil basically the biggest games publisher in the industry. They effectively banned developing new single player games. And, most of the rest of the AAA gaming publishers have followed suite in an attempt to compete with EA, because EA basically controls the direction of the market. The result is a massive dirth of new single player games on the market, unless you want to look at indie devs. It's a bit disingenous to claim we dont like single player games when the stats are driven by a market that intentionally hasnt really given us good ones in a long time. You cant can games like the visceral Star Wars game, then claim nobody likes games like that because nobody is playing them. This guy's way of thinking is why I honestly wish governments would regulate games company revenue streams back into the stone age. I get the feeling that, without it, and with a few indie exceptions, I'll never see new games that bring back the feeling of getting a 20 dollar box game (or 60 today) for my console, putting it in for the first time, and replaying the crap out of a well crafted, unbuggy, well written single player campaign created with love from a dev team that wasnt forced by CEOs to cram in microtransactions, forced to crunch and sh!t it out by some arbitrary deadline, and finally fired after completing the project while some CEO walks away with their profits.
