I think the reason it doesn't sound like a typical AMT driver is that it crosses over at almost 7k. The brightness and resonances of AMTs are typically around 3k. So that is not in play. I have a full range speaker with a ribbon super tweeter crossed over at 14 khz. You can't tell it's a ribbon either.

14khz eh ? from your picture you're the wrong side of 50 like me. Have you ever tested your hearing ? all of my friends, even the ones in their 40's, not a one could hear over 12.5 or 13.5khz ! came as a shock to me but there you have it. (tested with a steady tone on an Akai sampler)

@@englishsteve1465 Well, I'm almost 50 myself, but I can still hear up to about 17.5KHz. When I was a kid and teen I could hear up to 27KHz! But I think it's only because I've always taken great care of my ears, always wearing earplugs during any live music events or concerts, (not too many of those either), and also during loud work like using a hammer drill or air compressor, etc. I am an audiophile myself, and I also design, repair, improve, and build speakers for a hobby, and I install home theater systems in high-end homes for a living, plus I enjoy listening to most all types of music, so I really appreciate my excellent hearing and I always will as long as I have it!

These (8.27" x 4.72" x 6.69") are slightly smaller than the Dali Menuets (9.8" x 5.9" x 9.0"), which also go down to 60 Hz. I have the SE version and run them with a REL T0 subwoofer. The Menuet SEs completely belie their size and their midrange and top-end extension is outstanding. I was lucky to get a brand new pair a few months ago for £999 (they're now £1499 in the UK and, the last time I looked, $1999 in the US) -- and hence, comparable in price to the Supermon minis. From your description, I suspect that the two speakers sound quite similar. I run my SE's in a 19' x 11'6" listening space. They're about 4'6" out from the wall across the short axis to one side of the room. I like them there rather than near to the wall for a similar reason to yours with the Supermon minis: Bass might decrease, but the imaging and clarity is amazing. Besides, the sub helps if I listen to anything particularly bassy. It'd be fascinating to hear your take on the Menuet SEs if you ever get a pair to listen to, and see how you think they compare with the Supermon minis. The British Audiophile (a KZbin reviewer), also interestingly drew parallels between the Menuet SE's and the BBC LS3a's and hinted they might be better. As regards stuff to listen to, if you aren't already familiar, I'd suggest: Bela Fleck and the Flecktones Pentatonix Naturally 7 Ruth Notman Bert Jansch Stephen Fearing Gangstagrass To mention just a few.

Have you ever come across the Townshend Glastonbury II speakers? A very similar concept (and similar looking) , but a much larger floorstander, weighing in at 40kg. I bought mine in 1989 and have heard nothing I prefer since, though it has to be said I stopped looking long ago. Like the Supermon the cabinet is a very rigid aluminium and steel construction, filled with plaster of paris. It has a leaf tweeter and a spun aluminium main driver (designed by the legendary Ted Jordan) operating from 25Hz to 14kHz, gently crossing over above 7.5kHz. The cone, coil and rod weigh just 11 grams. There's also a front loaded bass reflex port...no subwoofer required;) They're easily driven at 88db/metre, so my Musical Fidelity A370-2 is probably overkill! Max Townshend, the designer (he of the Rock turntable fame), died last Christmas. EDIT: The Mark Fenlon driver is so reminiscent of the Ted Jordan driver in my Glastonbury's (the flexible roll surround is identical) that I did some research; this is a quote from Mark Fenlon taken from HI-Fi Pig Magazine, "I worked with Doreen Bance (Bandor) and Ted Jordan (E.J. Jordan) on a project basis. E. J. Jordan was sold to a Swedish interest, giving me the “push” to go-it alone and make my own driver designs." The Pearl Acoustics Sibelius single driver speakers also use the Mark Fenlon (Markaudio) drive unit. See: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kIDRZoukpLNlp6s&ab_channel=PursuitPerfectSystem

Add a pair of fast, high frequency playing, subs and roll off the speakers at 120 to 180 hz sharply. Then they could play in a bigger room, have greater dynamic range, and play cleaner in the mids.

interesting speaker, but with full dsp control you can have those in large rooms. just up the highpass frequency. but you need dsp early in the chain so you can apply highpass to main speakers and preferably time delay to help your with subwoofer integration. i also recommend using dual stereo subwoofers and they should be able to play up to 200hz. this is a complete system, and no one reviews that only, seperate parts. but in the end that is what we end up with.

Damn!! I have saved for a year and was going to buy the Buchardts. Now you mess me up with these Supermon minis. I want the sound signature you say they possess: smooth, holographic, super detailed, but most importantly realistic, the sense of the performer being in the room with you. Great for vocals and acoustic guitar. Also, I have a very small room, 12’ x12’. The trouble is I am worried because I don’t know this company. They told me they have a 15- day return policy with a 10% restock fee but I worry about them allowing any returns if I don’t love them. Also, I do like all kinds of music- can you tell me how they are with rock and roll? I understand they need a subwoofer. I wish I could hear them! Not sure what to do… JD

Some stuff from my current playlist: "K" by Cigarettes after Sex (nice and slow, kinda haunting); if you liked Dio, Pellek does some amazing vocal covers of the old metal stuff, He did cover "Holy Diver", but his other covers are VERY impressive (especially Iron Maiden) - do NOT listen on Focals lol; "GOAT" by Polyphia for some guitar trickery (no vocals); Armin van Buuren & Sharon den Adel "In And Out Of Love" (for female vocals, laid over classic 90-ies house); Christian Gray did fantastic covers of Elena Siegman's stuff ("115" and "Abracadavra" are amazing), "Echoes" by Pink Floyd (Medle album); "Faded" by Alan Walker but a piano cover by Toms Mucenieks. Some more pop stuff: "Common people" by Pulp; Halestorm - "Break In" (with Amy Lee); "Popular Monster" Falling in Reverse; "Throne" by Bring me the Horizon...just a few. Eclectic list, I know ;)

Have you experienced a number of towers or floorstanders as well? I'm about a year into the hobby but have quite a collection right now lol. I'm in a smallish room (10x14' imperial units) and am torn. I have a pair of subs I run with floorstander and bookshelf of various make and price and performance. I get the monitor + subs argument. But I also feel like there is a scale or sense of truncated sound sometimes with bookies. Even though my subs can play high (up to 120Hz, pair of rel t7x).. I seem to prefer a mid tower. I get how my subs only like to be in ONE place in the room or it's sorta disaster, and they wouldn't be the ideal placement for full range floorstanders, but I am still torn between the two setups. I do like how my monitors seem more intimate, but the towers seem to give grander presence (as they should, I suppose)

Being in a small room, I most definitely have prefered my more bass shy speakers combined with a sub, to something like the S400 - which are also great, but the other combo wins in the bass department every time. In the same room, but at my work desk, the KEF LSX paired horribly with the T/7i though 😱 I definitely want to try even smaller speakers with more subs 😍 Btw. these after taxes with a single T/9i would be double the price of the S400 over here.. 💸 Might be worth it though 😃 Fun/cute song: Keb’ mo’ - your love (Edited: un-spell-checked)

"Best midrange and high frequency for the price". Have you tried Closer Acoustics Ogy? They cost a bit less. They're the smallest speakers with a fullrange driver + 1/4 wave transmission line. The highs and mids are so goood. I can't stop listening to them.

Interesting mention of the LS3/5a. I'm not up for $10,000US for them, but might consider one of the modern remakes. I like that sound and am not a bass head. What would you identify as the top 3 strengths of the Mon or your Sonus Faber over the LS3/5a? Thanks for another excellent video. (Have you been to Texas, yet?)

Hey Jay. I like a little bit of everything: soft/yacht rock, contemporary Christian, r&b, and hip-hop. But I have a song for you that highlights female vocals and horns. "Waiting to Die" by Zero 7 featuring Sia. This is one of my favorites, particularly the chorus. Sia's voice is just beautiful, and the horns are wonderful, and sound real. Give it a listen and let me know what you think!

I think so. It's not too expensive (I was lucky enough to get my T0 mk II new on sale for £249 [$302] a while back). Especially in a NF setting, it should be fine. I like it because it has a high-level input via a (supplied) neutrik cable that you attach to your amp's speaker outputs, thus preserving the sound signature of your amp into the bass. Hence it doesn't draw attention to itself, seamlessly integrating into your system's sound.

Great review, thanks. But first, Korea is not a small country, Slovenia is 😂. I’d bet the vintage Bang & Olufsen CX 100 were the inspiration for these speakers. They also amaze and blow your sox off. Actually they outperform many hi-end speakers. And cost like 200 bucks used. Until audiophiles finally discover them.

Pepper Adams - album '10 To 4 At The 5 Spot' - song "'Tis". And the rest of them. Sarathy Korwar - album 'My East Is Your West' - song "Hajj" Monty Alexander - album 'Preception' - song - "Shaft" Thad Jones - album 'Mean What You Say' - song - All of them Buddy Rich - album 'The Argo, Verve, & Emarcy Small Group Sessions' - song "The Monster". (Maybe the most intense drum solo of all time. Sound quality is not great, musicianship is other worldly.) By the way, do those speakers come in a nice woodgrain like, maybe, rosewood or walnut? (Just kidding.)

For a compact speaker system they appear to hit all the marks. Using high end crossovers, like KLH, particularly on the Kendalls, makes for more finesse in the mid and high frequency. Now you mentioned several other speakers the “Minis” sound better than, but you did not mention the Kendalls, which you preferred over those you did. So at 2,000 grand, compared to 1500, which do you think is the better value!!??
@Jayiyagi
@Jayiyagi 2 жыл бұрын
great question. Given that the room is the same size; If imaging and sound staging is the goal, I'd pick the mini but if the full range-ish presentation was the goal (from bass to treble), the KLH is a better choice.
