@@jacobzimmermann59 No argument with that! I have always maintained that lovers of jazz piano have been well served. I can't think of any other instrument that has spawned so much talent. I could go on about this subject at length but for now would just say that although he was better know as a vocalist Nat Cole was an excellent pianist. Oh, and what about Ray Bryant!?

@@kennethhodges3187 I can think of some phenomenal talent on other instruments too, like the trumpet (Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis...) or the guitar (Django Reinhardt, Joe Pass...). I've listened to Nat King Cole several times but for some reason I never felt any magic there. On the other hand, check out Stephane Grapelli. He's mostly known as a violin player, of course, but he also played the piano - and whether style-wise or technique-wise, he was like Art Tatum's twin brother.

@@jacobzimmermann59 I didn't mean to imply that musicians on other instruments were not of equal importance. It's just that there have been so many good piano players, hundreds in fact, so by sheer force of numbers they didn't all get their dues! You can in fact find a pianist of worth, for every letter in the alphabet! For the letter 'A' alone there is Don Abney, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Joe Albany, Monty Alexander, Albert Ammons, George Arvanitas, Marvin Ash, and Lynne Arriale. The list goes on...........

I believe this was in 1965 .. Earl would have been around 62. Thanks for posting. Was reading where he worked in gangster Al Capones's Grand Terrance Cafe for 12 years from age 25 to 37 ...later a young Charlie Parker and Dizzy came through his band ... what a story !!!!

Según Stuart Isacoff, Fatha Hines fue uno de los inflamables del piano. Sus improvisaciones lúcidas, tiernas, o feroces marcarían una época irrenunciable del jazz
