I like that Haraldson outright stated he had nothing but respect for Ragnar, but he feared that if he ever showed it the people would turn on him. It made him a very interesting antagonist.

yes alot of people miss that. also haraldsson was true to the gods and a badass until the end.. his days were past him and he didnt have to accept ragnars demand for single combat, but did, either he won and regained his former glory and retained power through the display or he would die a legend.

Haraldson also created an enemy where none necessarily was. He was paranoid ever since his sons were murdered and he began to see anyone who so much as questioned him as a potential traitor.

@Laurbster he was never able to find out, and the show forgot about it. By the rules of the Thing, Ragnar was within his rights to question the decision. The Thing was an open council which allowed the members of the community to bring grievances and be heard. Ragnar didn't start directly challenging Haraldsen until Haraldsen began targeting Ragnar.

Anyone who had sailed east back then never returned and it was also very difficult to stay on course as for any reason such as a storm would knock them off course, couldnt use the stars as it might be cloudy skies, harraldson didnt want to risk it and never thought of the shadow trick ragnar did and the glass to find the sun when its cloudy, he also couldnt let ragnar be the one in charge of raiding as his men would easily turn on him for showing he respected ragnar and his decisions

No. Ragnar was in a depression, near death, and trying to "seduce" Lagertha It's normal to say things who are incorrect, because you mean it during this part of your life, but not during 99% part of your past life. He was happy with Lagertha and Bjorn at the Farm, but he was also very happy to bring food and gold to his people. He made them a remarkable people in history. Look how much Kattegat is big since Ragnar went from farmer into king, thanks to him. This kind of things make him happy. And as he said once to Bjorn "unhappiness is more common than happiness" and to Ivar "happiness is nothing". Because he knows it's better for his people to bring a fertile soil, than to stay a farmer. The whole humanity progressed because they prefer to sacrifice for their child, than to prioritize their own happiness.

The entire premise that the Nordic people didn’t know about the Island of Great Britain was the dumbest part of season one, I mean they had traders that went there for hundreds of years and was conquered by the Saxons, a related people earlier in history, you can see it from the coast of France FFS!

Yes, but knowledge was with few people. If you stare at the sea you will be staring in a direction towards a country/city. And you have that huge sea to deal with and no tools to direct you. Nordic were aware there where something west of them, but not quite where it was, how much time it took plus tides, storms and night voyages would make the expedition risky and costly. They could go south down the coast of continental Europe and the England but that takes much more time and you have to deal 1st with people that know you and are better prepared to fight you. The saxons who conquered Great Britain would probably had no trouble dealing with the vikings, they were very similar. But after several centuries they became more peaceful and civilised and forgot their fighting brutal traditions

Ain't it ironic how the series started out with a paranoid viking leader who would threaten anyone who questioned him and ended with a paranoid viking leader who would threaten and kill anyone who questioned him, only the Latter was the son of Ragnar, the same man who killed the first Leader,Haraldson should've made friends with Ragnar, even put him up to be next in line to lead, too bad he was busy chasing Old Glories and making enemies out of men he said he respected. I know it's loosely based on Real Events but had Haraldson befriended the Lothbroks, believing in Ragnars tenacity and easing Rollos ambition by marrying his daughter to him he coulda avoided alot of trouble. Oh well 🤷‍♂️ it show business
