Here's the story of the first Europeans to permanently settle in North America.

Each year, it picked up, with the English, Spanish, French, and soon Dutch setting up more and more colonies.
Three main groups came to settle in the colonies.
1. Economic immigrants, who were those looking for a better life. This group included the indentured servants, or people who paid for their passage to the New World by being forced to work for somebody for a certain number of years before getting their freedom. Most of the indentured servants were English farmers who had been pushed off their lands due to overcrowding. Up to ⅔ of European immigrants who came to the American colonies between the 1630s and the American Revolution were indentured servants.
2. Religious immigrants, who came to practice their religion freely. Included in this group were the famous Pilgrims who settled at Plymouth Colony.
3. Forced immigrants, who came over as slaves, mostly from Africa.
It was the English immigrants who dominated in what later became the United States of America, probably because they came to live in larger numbers during the 1600s. From about 1630 to 1640 alone, around 20,000 Puritans crossed the Atlantic to live in New England. Even today, people with English ancestry arguably make up the largest group of Americans, though it is hard to know for sure. 8 out of the 10 most common last names in the United States are of English or British Isles origin.

St.John's Newfoundland is one of the oldest settlements in North America .On 5 August 1583 Sir Humphrey Gilbert claimed the area as England's first overseas colony under Royal Charter of Queen Elizabeth I. Residency was seasonal for a few decades however so it can't claim to be the oldest city. The first European settlement was Hop, founded by Thorfin Karlsefni circa 1000 AD, also in Newfoundland although it's location has not yet been officially confirmed, Fellow Norseman Leif Ericson's settlement from around the same time was located at the tip of Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula near the present day town of L'anse aux Meadows.

@EdinburghFive 4 жыл бұрын
Although Sir Humphrey Gilbert claimed Newfoundland for England the area had been utilized by European fishermen for nearly one hundred years. The French had also claimed the eastern region of North America, including Newfoundland, even earlier. Jacques Cartier established a short lived settlement in Quebec 1530s.

It’s just sad hisssssyory is still being told. This isn’t correct cause it may have happen to European but Africa was among they first explores. Threw South America and Central America finally America. They found African culture in Ohio. Why do you think it’s rumor of lost city of gold around the grand canon. In old letter from English kings they speak about the gold in Africa being like dust in England. So it was everywhere in Africa. Tell the correct story you always have to proven you was in the beginning and they wasn’t. Now Columbus is still celebrated but never found America. Never sailed to America. He called everyone Indians cause he thought he was in the indies. So he could of called African Indians cause he was clueless where the he’ll he was.

Mr Beat could you explain when and maybe how all these different nationalities came to speak with the American accents we hear today. Why didn't they carry down there own native accents? Was it biological, environmental or interacial relationships that played a part in it? Many thanks.
@classicepisodesofcrimewatc9971
@classicepisodesofcrimewatc9971 2 жыл бұрын
Natural course of events. Old accents are lost, new accents form due to a diverse group of people speaking to and living amongst each other. But you used to be able to hear the accents much more in years gone by. Irish people in New York and Boston, Italians all over the North East, Ashkenazi Jews, Scotch Irish in the Deep South... And you can somewhat still hear the influence although it is much less noticeable in this globalised and extremely multicultural era

My paternal ancestor Kaspar immigrated from the Holy Roman Empire (Schleswig-Holstein) to 'New Holland' in 1648 with his wife as an indentured servant. He worked 7 years and then was given a title to land in what is now Albany NY. Using his skills acquired over the first several years in America, he started a farm. They came over, because there was no opportunity in Europe. The land was deforested and the earth was over-used. Over the years most of the large animals had been slaughtered for food. And the land had been over-used, with insufficient crop yields to adequately feed the population. They didn't come to conquer, they came to have a better life.

The Inuit people of the arctic are a relatively new group in the north. For example when the Norse settled in Greenland and Newfoundland they interacted with the Dorset people and Innu. The Thule people (Inuit) then invaded the North sometime after 1000 AD. Conflict with the Dorset maybe one reason why the Norse settlements failed.

In fact the tribes were pretty organized, they had a vast commercial system, they populated the whole continent and there werent any major conflicts except for a few little wars from time to time as for the gov they had one inside the tribes and the land always was full of ressources
@EdinburghFive
@EdinburghFive 4 жыл бұрын
Hi @@maxaudet5177 - The idea there weren't "any major conflicts" in the New World would not be the case. There were as you know some pretty major empires in the New World such as the Aztecs, Inca, and Cahokians. These did not come about without warfare. Also you should keep in mind that 'traditional' societies, which most of the tribes of the New World fall into, were in fact very violent. Each tribe had to protect their territory and resources from other tribes. Everyone who was not of your tribe and not known was suspect and you were prepared to fight and kill them. A matter of survival. Traditional societies are in fact much more violent than more complex societies.
