Early Morning Grizzly and Wolves on a Carcass - Yellowstone National Park

This is a video from a hike that I did with my wife and a friend several years ago. I did some re-editing to get rid of video shake and improved sound quality. Things to note are, initially you will see wolves near the grizzly. So you can imagine the battle the grizzly must have had trying to keep the wolves away all night long. You will see how tired the grizzly is when the wolves leave (probably because of our presence) and how it lays on top of the carcass. The early morning sound of the coyote echoing is amazing. At one point you can hear what sounds like a dog barking, but this location is about 2 miles up the Bighorn trail on the highway 89 side so obviously there would be no dogs. I can only guess it was a wolf barking, although I have never heard a wolf bark like that before.

Yes. He is probably the same big black grizzly that was in the last short grizzly video I published. Both videos were on Bighorn Creek trail. Both of these were from about 10 years ago.

Wolves do bark, but very rarely. It is a sign of high stress or an alert to other pack members.

Yellowstone is our national treasure. I wouldn’t trade it for all the combined Crown Jewels of of every kingdom and empire that has ever existed.

Also, thank you for the footage without disturbing the bear. Too often I see people get way too close and disrespect them. You’re wonderful people.

I agree with the earlier comment…seeing where you and your wife are in comparison to the bear, and then you zoom in. Amazing! Was the bear guarding an elk carcass? I could not tell. Than you for, Stan, for another great video! Those coyote or wolf barks are so eerie! 😳

I would guess it was an elk carcass but I could never see what it was with all the sagebrush around it.

Excellent video. I loved seeing the wolves and think I hear a coyote in the background. How were the wolves behaving with your presence, did they just stare or run away? I only ask because I know they are used to spotting Scopes, but seeing someone walking around would be something they're not used to.

I’m surprised the grizzlies are still out…. I figured they would be tucked away for the winter…Ravens normally like to aggravate the grizzlies…

I believe Stan said this was from 10 years ago, also one of the Elk looks to be in velvet so it wouldn't be at this time of the year anyways.

I love these animals, the grizzly, the elk and the wolves, their all just so magical and majestic, hardy but, vulnerable, and very gorgeous! I feel so bad for the animal that lost its life, what a shame! Oh I know people say that's the circle of life, I value animals lives and I always will, I really hate to see bad things happen to animals, each animal is so mighty important!

I truly wouldn't been out there unless in a tundra vehicle up high. Where r u gonna run if big bear charges??
@StanMills
@StanMills Жыл бұрын
That is a one of the points I try to make in all the grizzly bear videos that I have out there. They are partly about how to behave in grizzly country so they don't charge you. I am not saying to anyone that they should do the same thing, it is just another approach or perspective to think about for hiking in areas that have a lot of amazing wildlife. Thanks for your comments.
