*Have I ever helped you make a purchasing decision or enlightened you on an awesome new game you enjoy?* Fan funding and sharing my videos among friends, greatly helps to support Boomstick Gaming. Thank YOU! To give some further review context, I played and beat EDF 5 just a few months ago and that was the first Earth Defense Force game I really dug into. The developer of Iron Rain was an entirely different team and I think they made some great improvements overall to the core gameplay and obviously the presentation. They plan on adding in more content after launch and I hope to see more enemy variety put into the game and possibly larger swarms of creatures (frame rate depending). I do however think this was an important step for the franchise and it seems to be taking the necessary steps to gain more mainstream appeal. EDF! Thanks for watching and reading! -Deadite

I see a lot of EDF "fans" complain about this game quite a bit. Many of them are 4.1 or 5 vets. I've played every single EDF title released here in the US on home consoles starting with 2017 on the 360 all the way up to Iron Rain on PS4 (yes, even Insect Armageddon which to me wasn't all that bad either) and all of them have their own sort of EDF flavor that can be enjoyed and cherished unless you're the type of person who doesn't like change. I feel like true EDF fans should be able to appreciate any of the EDF games on offer so long as the gameplay holds up well and I personally think Iron Rain does this just as well as 4.1 or 5 but for different reasons. Yes, it has less enemies, less weapons and a different weapon/upgrade progression system but the gameplay was tweaked to account for all this. I don't mind picking up gems, sometimes its better than struggling to find all the random green weapon boxes from the other games. Other times I wish I could just pick up crates, it depends on the level you're grinding in tbh. All in all, I really like Iron Rain and it makes a great accompanying title alongside 4.1 and 5 for those who like a new challenge in a mindless but exhilarating B-Movie monster franchise.

I am considering to take a shot at EDF franchise. My main concern about your review was the spoilers. I understand that it is probably more challenging to be spoilers free in a video format but in my opinion it is the most important thing when I am looking for a review. I mean, as a very experienced gamer, I usually don't even need reviews anymore, most of the time. And I found out that with the rise of internet, social medias and marketing(like trailers for exemple), the potential spoilers that goes along with it are one of the major threats to the user experience. Discovering key gaming moments by ourselves is extremely important when it comes to appreciation and quality of the experience. I subscribed to the channel for the very interesting tips and information about Apex Legends gameplay. Because like I said, for an experienced player, some random tier person advice or info has to be meaningful and efficient to be worth the time. Goodluck with your channel. I think I will give try that EDF Iron Rain. Or maybe EDF5 instead. Some of the cons are bothering me, like the content and potential regressions of the core gameplay.

@KSpartan5 жыл бұрын
@@Jake-kj6zr It took me a moment before I realize you're struggling with the notion of spoiler. It doesn't necessarily relate to "story". Wtf. The case of EDF is actually a good example when all is about content, both in equipment unlocks and bestiary.

There is a GREAT deal i refrained from showing in this. It is important to accurately convey the product for potential consumers however and each clip I did use was meticulously chosen.
@Jake-kj6zr5 жыл бұрын
@@KSpartan I mean I get what you're saying but I think you worded it wrong the definition is "a description of an important plot development in a television show, movie, or book which if previously known may reduce surprise or suspense for a first-time viewer or reader." I get you arent referring to plot and whatever but I think the confusion came from the misuse of the word.
@KSpartan5 жыл бұрын
@@Jake-kj6zr A misuse of the word, if you say so... Dude, I am French, even in our langage it is called a spoiler. It is like if you said urban dictionary is irrelevant, for example. We talk about a notion, not a word. It all about revealing something you are supposed to discover as a part of something you should be experiencing yourself(and while playing the game in this context). It is a part of the quality of the experience, and usually a big one in term of impact. In French it is about "gâcher"(to spoil) something, like in this context, some content or a surprise. Which is absolutely not exclusively referring to old medias plot reveals. You can apply it to everything. For example, a birthday cake, can be "spoiled", if it is falling on the floor, or if someone had a bite at it before reveal, or someone can spoil the reveal of the birthday party surprise. But there is no exactly French word for some spoiling a surprise for that last example. That is why the narrative english meaning of spoiler is convenient, especially in our modern times. Yes, because videogames are not even in your basic description. But you can't deny videogames is actually a big deal. It is an independent media by itself, with its own characteristics. And for videogames, the quality of the user experience can be ruined by a ton of factors. One of them is the spoilers, which in this case refer to any content the game has to offer for it's value, or for the money investment. To ruin, or to pillage is not exactly the same thing, but that is from where the word is coming from at the beginning, in Latin. It not easy for me to be perfectly clear and pertinent for obvious language reason. Spoiler, in it's narrative meaning is a modern notion, and potentially fluid. The example of videogames case is difficult to deny. Or you can tell us the more appropriate word. But what I was trying to do is to help. The KZbinr should be aware of that concern, which he is, like he said himsel. The consumer should be aware that the more spoiler he sees, the lower he will be thrilled by playing the game himself. In the end, the author of the review or the gamers in general can do whatever they want, assuming they can deal with the consequences. There is a big topic about the issue. Part of the marketing power is leeching more and more to the videogames content. In an attempt to make a trailer extra appealling, they actually spoil, or ruin the actual experience of experiencing the content(of the movie or videogame). And it is the same for Youtubing. Creators have a responsibility. And of course gamers too. The main issue is trailers, because it can be potentially imposed to the viewer andience. With Twitch or YT, you you know you will see shit. For the press or the reviewers, we know that it may reveal content. Then comes the ability to review, or to create some marketing that is not ruining the experience. The first Alien movie trailer is a famous example for when it's done right.

I decided to get this after watching your live stream on it. I'm about a third of the way through. The weapon variety just isn't there. It seems so lack luster with a small handful that are actually fun to use. I'd rather pick up weapon boxes with rng than spend currency on a weapon I will try out and hate. Had there been a greater variety to go through - it'd be better. Also the jet lifter is complete garbage. After playing wing diver in 5 (the movement for wing diver is amazing in that) - it doesn't make sense for this game to have that class feel like you're in space trying to swim through a huge body of water. Still enjoy the game but it definitely has big flaws. For anyone looking to get it - wait on a sale.
@BoomstickGaming5 жыл бұрын
i thought the same at 1st but the weapon progression is tied to doing ALL difficulties. So you will not get anywhere near close to all the best weapons if you just play through the campaign once on normal. You just experienced a small fraction of the basic weapons if you do so. That's what i meant in the review by "your mileage may drastically vary if you choose to stop after completing the campaign once". You do have a point but also purposely balanced that way.
@tooblind17315 жыл бұрын
@@BoomstickGaming Ah okay. I've beaten the game already on normal and little over half on hard. Roughly 15 hours or so. By that time in EDF 5 I'd have some really nifty things. Taking so long to actually get to the good stuff seems counter intuitive. It's not like this game is monster hunter where the core game play is enjoyable enough that mat grinding can be somewhat of an after thought. Appreciate the reply though. I will be sticking with this til I beat it all the way up to Disaster difficulty.

I don't understand what people are seeing in this. I'm getting annoyed and pissed playing this. There's an annoying grind just to grind. I have to grind materials and money to unlock the proper weapons I need to be able to progress because the difficulty spike gets absurd very quickly. This isn't fun, it's annoying. I have to grind to unlock weapons I just unlocked and buy health so I stop dying.
@BoomstickGaming5 жыл бұрын
If you find the difficulty to spike, the game actually probably wants you to take in a different class since many are geared towards excelling at certain types of missions. If that's not working, try doing mission 1 through whatever you can, on "Hard", to get some more money for HP and this will also unlock some higher rank weapons sooner.

In comparison to 5 or 4.1: the destruction in environments are flat hollow polygons breaking.. it looks pretty fake there is no detail inside the buildings, the environment is bland ultra crisp with no detail, no civilians ruining around, the animations are again stiff.. the Unreal engine is simply not a good fit for this sort of a game(or any game). Most of the charm is lost by forcefully trying to copy the original edf 3/4 voice work. The guns do work better but this is simply not an EDF game, its seems made for micro transactions which were removed at some point in development. Little to no effort was put into npc's clutter destructible cars or original b rated voice work. This seems to be the future for most games so perhaps calling this a 'good sequel" is warranted. Well its not a bad game its just not a EDF game.
