My Shih Tzu has pancreatitis and I have made her food since she was 8 weeks old. I use only chicken (breasts and thighs skinless cut into 2 inch pieces) because she can't have too much fat. I use 3 1/2 cups of water to simmer the chicken, carrots (I use regular carrots because the "baby" carrots are bleached), celery, sweet peas and Lima beans to season the water (she LOVES the creamy Lima beans). Once the chicken is cooked through, I take it out to cool, and take out the veggies and place them in ice water to stop the cooking and preserve as much vitamins as I can. I add 1 cup of brown rice and 1/3 cup of dried cranberries to the water. I process the chicken, then the veggies when cooled, and the rice is done in about 45 min. The rice is still soupy so I also add 2 pkgs of plain instant oatmeal. This is enough food for about 14 days, being fed 1/3 cup twice a day. Today she is 12 years old and still runs and jumps like a puppy! She had maintained her 14 lb weight all her life and the vet says to keep doing what we are doing because her yearly check ups have been perfect. Next time I am going to add eggs to her mixture as you suggested. Thanks for putting this video out there!

Yes he has. As I because to many dogs ESPECIALLY die at early ages now from messed up don't even know what's in some of dry foods. To the meal etc products by products crap? Lots have changed over the years. Also many of the bigger brands are stating changes to theirs as well. But 1st when I started my research Blue buffalo to the Hills Science which vets highly recommend to try and even Sale. Some bad batches of both of these we're killing dogs. I've yet to use either one. Causes cancer at early ages. Not cool. Yet seems many are trying to step up their game too.

Research what goes into. kibble and I' m sure you'll be horrified....absolutely disgusting. And the extreme high heat that they have to use causes cancer causing end products called A.G.E.'s. Don't remember right now what they stand for but you can research it. There are no good kibble or canned foods. The only healthy way to feed your dogs are raw or lightly cooked fresh whole foods - human grade and organic if you can especially with the blueberries, or other fruits and vegetables. Dogs don't have the digestive enzymes to digest vegetables and fruit. In the wild the fruit and vegetables they ate were already partially digested in the guts of their prey. But in the summer, wolves will eat some wild growing blueberries.

This looks really good! Glad the pups love it. In 2005, there were a lot of dogs that died from dog food made in China or with ingredients sourced from China. It prompted me to make their own food. Not only do they love it, I know exactly what ingredients are in their food. I usually just use one type of protein though per cooking and switch it up every week with a different protein. Sometimes I add chicken liver to the protein. For vegetables, I switch it around as well each week: green beans, carrots, zucchini, squash, pumpkin, chards, peas. For carbs, potatoes, sweet potatoes. I also make my own chicken broth. I used to buy them until I discovered it has onions/onions concentrate in it.

Good for you! Happy dogs! Yes you can use whatever store bought or homemade broth you want (or use just water). Some vets say tiny amounts of onion and garlic are actually beneficial. But online, you'll find conflicting info on any topic. In the final meals, the amount of onion is miniscule. My dog is 13 years old now. Never been sick or injured his whole life. Acts like a crazy puppy still. And still has sharp white teeth equal to a 3 or 4 year old dog. I also make homemade healthy treats (see my dog treat playlist).

Just wanted to add. Get those organ meats in there. Livers, tripe, kidneys, etc.. Also bones and calcium are important. My dog will eat half a raw chicken, or whole cornish hen, bones and all. Never feed cooked bones, only raw. If you don't want to feed bones, save all your egg shells. I just smash them up in my meals, but you can dry them and blend them up to a powder to add to the food.

My dogs were an absolute mess with what the vets all said was just how they'd be forever so he prescribed apoquel, which destroys their immune system longterm. I wouldn't accept that this was the situation because every dog I've had, over time, got like this. Scratching constantly, smells ears that would really bother them, gunky eyes, bad odor, etc. The vets all said after doing allergy tests that they're basically allergic to almost everything. Well, im aware that literally anything eaten causes an inflammatory response. What's important is "how much" of a response. After reading up on apoquel and how devastating it is long-term, and watching them suffer anyways after awhile, I HAD to figure this out. So I've been cooking fresh foods just as you do, and really making sure they were provided adequate micro and macronutrients. This seemed to help a great deal. I weaned them off of the apoquel but also knew there was something im missing that has to be the root cause. I needed to assess, "Why can't they properly process food and not have it attack them in every way?" And "What could affect it all?" Then it all started to click when I ran out of bottled water for myself and went to take a drink from the tap. It smelled like chlorine and chemicals. I have city water and its treated heavily. I did some KZbin research and an expert in the field of water treatment said that no matter what, if you are smelling the chemicals in your water, they are most likely overtreating your water, because it has too high of bacteria! 😲💡Them treating the water, was also killing the good bacteria in their guts and intestines! It would be like taking prednisone forever! I immediately shut it down as a drinking source, started providing good clean, lightly mineralized water and got them started on a broad spectrum of pre & probiotics. Its only been a month so far but they are but they are both doing soo much better that its incredible! I can't wait to see in a few months after their gut biome is abundantly thriving! Im sorry to end this on a sad note but the message is too important. My mother lived in this house. For years and years, she had inflammatory issues that wrecked her health and no doctors could figure it out. Also, her immune system was shot. The only thing that helped, was when I got her on a ketogenic diet, and only because it was all super low inflammatory foods. She got blood tests and somehow now showed zero markers for both autoimmune diseases, rheumatory arthritis, and lupus. Over a few months time, magically two clean blood tests! She was becoming healthier and more energetic than any of us had seen in probably 15-20 years! But still her immune system was bad. I think I know why now. 😔 She contracted covid last year alongside my father. He got better, and she got pneumonia and was hospitalized. She fought hard for 5 weeks but it was so hard on her, and after a few egregious errors by the hospital as well, she passed away. Even in poor health, she loved these dogs and tried for a long time to make them better but nobody could ever figure it out, just like her health. You'd sometimes see her sitting with them crying quietly over feeling helpess for them. If she could see them now, she would be bawling with joy, and I can't help but wonder, if I could have figured this out sooner and maybe gotten her stomach healthy as well, maybe she'd be here to. Moral of the story, if your pets or even family members are dealing with inflammatory issues, allergies of any kind, or immune system problems in general, go to the gut. That good bacteria keeps us alive and healthy in every way. If it dies, so do we. And if you drink city water that's chemically treated, remember this and take action. Especially if you can smell or taste it. Best wishes to you all. Take care.

I thought cooking their meats canceled the nutrients... That's what my dog trainer told me. I feed my dog raw meat as it represents their environment in the wilderness and makes sense that it would be less nutritious. As for veggies we peel it and give her the shredding from carrots, sweet potatoes and other veggies including left overs. For breakfast we give her a raw egg with the smashed shell for calcium and a little fruit and for dinner raw meat and veggies. She is now 7 and slowing down so I've been questioning the dry dog food I add to her meals. I'm looking for another option or to remove it all together. Thanks for your video.

People often get a lot of bad / mis information online. I actually feed my dog raw meat and bones as well. As for cooking, the loss of nutrients depends how it is cooked, for how long, etc... By cooking in liquid/water, it ensures the temperature never gets over 212 degrees. Whereas cooking meat on a hot 500 degree cast iron pan or grill would be different. That being said, humans survive on mostly all cooked food. The nutrients are not like just gone... Think of how healthy we think a quality broth or bone broth is. That is cooked for sometimes more than a day. Yet we get all those nutrients from it. Raw dog foods also need to be frozen, then thawed before feeding. Kind of how all sushi (at least in the USA) is never 'fresh'. It is required by law to be frozen at a certain temperature for a certain amount of time before being thawed and served. This is to kill off potential bad things in the meat. And you know what freezing does? It also destroys nutrients. The basic point is, almost everything is better than burnt to a crisp kibble. For sure give some homemade meals a try! Ditch the kibble! My dog is 12 years old now, never been sick or injured his whole life, and still acts like a puppy.

When it’s done cooking, I scoop out the amount I’ll need to feed my dogs. I evenly spread that amount directly onto a clean cookie sheet and I set it aside to cool. It’s usually cool within 10 mins. It’s better than waiting 2 hours for a big pot of food to cool.

Fyi... Recipe for amazing dog treats... Pre-heat oven to 370° One cup, almond flour One cup, oatmeal flour One cup, mixed seed flour (flax, sunflower, walnut) One cup of broth (your choice)... Two eggs (whole, shells blended in blender) One heaping cup of peanut butter or half and half cashew butter. Mix together all dry ingredients, slowly adding in wet ingredients until a soft dough forms... Cut dough in four quarters keeping three quarters in bowl with damped cloth over... Roll out each quarter in long logs until desired width is obtained which would consist of bite sized chunks! Cut each treat into About 1 inch long for larger dogs and shorter for smaller dogs! Using a sharp knife cutting sections intil log is all cut, then placing on a cookie sheet and continuing this process until all the dough is used up. Bake each batch until lightly browned and very crispy. *I also make variations of this recipe, replacing the nut butter with small chunks of meat (diced small), and a can of tuna, with bacon fat... As well as liver cooked, diced small making a gravy from the drippings and adding this to the treat recipe. As long as the ratio of meat and flavorings are more than the dough this is a *hit*... healthy, wholesome, and dogs love these treats even as meal suppliments. Add some pumpkin to this and you have a complete meal! However these require refrigeration. Enjoy and have fun exparimenting...

a friend of mine is in malamute/husky rescue, she cooks for all her dogs. I have a teeny tiny miniature doxie, she's never gotten more than about 5-7 lbs. I have a lab mix who is closer to 90lbs. I am unsure how much to feed them, if I were to cook for them. Do you have a rule of thumb to follow? They are not very active. He's about 14 and she's about 8. Thanks.

The general rule for homemade dog food is to feed 2 to 4 percent of the dogs body weight per day. Depends on age, breed, activity level, etc.. 3% is a good starting point. So, a 50lb dog would need about 1.5lbs of food per day.

I don't give any supplements, just a well rounded diet. I make homemade cooked food a little different each time. This ensures a variety of ingredients and nutrients. Great recipe, but why use pork, as some dogs don't have the enzyme needed to digest it, and get really ill from even a small amount of pork. Also, I'd suggest making your own broth from scratch; all store-bought broth has sodium in it to preserve it at room temperature. Some has more, some has less, but all have it. If you make your own in a huge stock pot, you can freeze the excess and have completely sodium-free food. Otherwise, great vid!

General rule for home cooked dog food is 2 to 5 percent of dogs body weight per day; depending on age, breed, activity level, etc. 3% is a good starting point. As for what dogs need, you will find all types of people giving all types of random advice. I just feed a well rounded diet. I feed homemade food like this (made slightly different every time to get different nutrients), raw meat and bones, and I make homemade dehydrated muscle and organ meat jerky for treats. Once or twice a month I give a can of high quality wet dog food, just to make sure my dog gets all the added vitamins and minerals, etc. in case I missed something in his diet. But really, people way over think dog food. Get some meat and healthy for dog veggies, and you are pretty much good to go. Use some fish from time to time as well.

Hi no disrepect to anyone here, but should the gogs not have raw veggies. I give raw veggies, as she loves chewing food. I do boil chicken for her. But do not normally give her any cooked veggies. Also we do not normally feed our food as it contains salt and some sort of tasty bits like chillies, onion, garlic etc. We are getting off kibble, that is what the breeder gave. We continued for a while with mixture of fresh meat and veggies eggs, coconut oil, oats, salmon oil. We are gradually getting away from kibble. She is nine months, so by the time she is 11 months, she will hardly have any kibble. She does not seem to mind, as not fussy eater. Just loves all foods. Bur keeping them healthy is our job.
