I feel like we dont talk about attenuators enough in our high gain community... I bought an Iron Man and i feel like im RE-discovering all my tube amps all over again as if they were new because i can bring those cooked tubes down to a humane level... And man those sounds are addicting... Super rad purchase. 🤘

My favorite way to use this is after a regular overdrive pedal, into a somewhat undergained amp. So SD-1 on normal settings -> Plumes middle switch with tone at about 2.5 to 3.5, level a little under half and the gain just on a little bit -> Plexi or something low gain. It is a secret weapon for me actually :D

Cool you're using the OD808 on the 5150 now. After I suggested it I don't think you liked it at first. I'm the Stealth 50 watt, I'm actually liking the Sd-1 now haha.. On the blue channel. On the red channel, I'm starting to like the OCD V 1.4 with the bass on the amp not higher than maybe 1 o'clock. On the blue channel though, the SD-1 easily wins. The OCD 1.4 has too much low end for the blue channel, but makes the red channel have a little more Fidelity, as long as the gain of the red channel isn't too high and you keep the bass close to noon. The SD-1 doesn't make the blue channel sound like a Marshall, but it brings the sound baked into the boosted Marshall tone we are used to back to the Stealth a little bit. I keep the volume and gain pointed right about where it says tone, and the tone kinda where you have it, but I have a totally different guitar and pickups. At that point it cuts a little less bass which works better for me. The only issue is it can be a bit noisy as you bring the gain up. The C6 mod on the sd1 also works pretty well.. It's subtle but it also adds a little noise. It makes the mid bump just slightly less and opens the top just a tad. When you first do the mod, you don't notice it a whole lot to be honest. But after a day of playing it and you switch it back to stock, you can make a better judgment. It's kind of like the trick Marty Friedman uses with the Maxon AF-9. The c6 mod doesn't sound like the af-9 of course, but the part that's similar is that when you first turn it on, you don't notice a difference, but after turning it off you do. I still have to install a switch for the mod to do a better AB though, because each sd-1 I have still sounds a little different. It's the easiest mod ever. You just unsolder capacitor c6. To put it on a switch, you just unsolder 1 leg and put a switch in between. I'm going to out the switch inside of the pedal for now, not to drill my pedal. Speaking of the AF-9 though, it's a crazy cool pedal for leads the way Marty uses it. You turn all the controls to zero and it adds a tiny envelope to the attack of your notes. It's really an auto wah, but with the controls down, one barely notices the tone, except that it adds this really cool dynamic to a leads that's addictive to play. I kicked out and got one for super cheap because it had sharpie marks on it, but I just used some alcohol and it came right off and now I have mint pedal! I also have the version with sliders. I'm not sure if the version with knobs works identically with everything at zero but maybe. Again, with these settings, it doesn't do a heavy auto wah sound. It's very subtle and mostly on the attack of the note... Almost like an extra dimension to your note dynamics. IIRC, the only control I might slightly raise is the sensitivity slider. I think the price went up a couple year ago because bass players realized that it works really well as a mutron-type pedal... Because expensive 3leaf pedals are always sold out due to purposefully limited production, it became an alternate pedal to try. Anyhow, I think Marty has a demo of it on YT. Sorry I went on a tangent.. I just remembered the AF-9 when talking about c6. 😂

I feel like you can't go wrong with any of the overdrives you have, it's just a different flavor. If people like to have their low mids, but also still have your typical tube screamer sound in front of the amp, nothing wrong with the plumes. If people prefer that tight low mids, your typical tube screamer will do the job. They're all roughly the same price. It's up to the player on what's right for them.

I’ve owned a Plumes for a few months now. It is versatile and good for the money no doubt but not my personal favorite when it comes to tight thrashy stuff which I typically play. In my experience the Maxon OD808 is the king for that application. And I gotta say the SD-1 sounded really good for that in this video. Idk why I haven’t gotten one of those yet. They’re so affordable but sound rad. Great video I love your content keep it up! 🤘

Well today I received an old friend. Back in the early 2000s I had a valvestate and a Boss Super OD. Been years. Got an all tube Marshall now. 50 bucks. The black box it showed up in looked worth that. Didn’t even set it. Just plugged it in. That sound and tone. And a bonus. Turn the clean on with the OD and some echo. Geezus. Euge we both know………

Hey Euge! Not sure where the unity position on the volube knob is on sd-1, but for Plumes it is a little below 12 o clock:)) The thing has a ton of volume and gain (and the tone knob is also pretty powerful heheh). So if you put the knobs regular tubescreamer style you are actually pushing the crap out of the preamp with the volume, hence the flub. I love my Plumes because it doesn't get the honk of the other tubescreamer style pedals, it boosts the higher mids, around 1k, still cuts through, bit sits better in the mix in my opinion. Love the channel!

Man, that V is sick! I totally agree, I’ve used an SD-1 for years. I kept trying different overdrives because I thought I’d find something better, I always end up coming back to an SD-1. I also got a Plumes because of all the hype when they came out. Now I run both on my board, they are so different it’s almost like having two rhythm or lead tones depending. The plumes also seems to make a lot more noise, I never run the output past half because otherwise it makes a shitload of noise. I think it has the most gain of any overdrive I’ve tried. Another cool one to check out if you haven’t is the Maxon OD808X, used to have one and I liked it a bit more than the plumes.

Yeah! 😎 Indeed. Yeah I used the 808x on one Shining album if I remember correct. It was the other guitarist Peter Huss’ od and we both ended up using that. But I think I also used an SD on that album like always 😎. I think the album was the IX.

I've done the SD-1 / 808 / Plumes shootout with my Marshall DSL20 and I ended up preferring the Plumes with it. I found the SD-1 too tight and aggressive for my taste with the DSL20. 808 was fine, but I get more clarity with the Plumes. I actually like the fact that the Plumes cuts less bass. It's exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a little tightening, but not SD-1 levels of right. Again, SD-1 is a beast, just makes my amp more aggressive then I usually like. I'm more of a heavy rock, punk player, and not nearly as much of a metal player as you, so it all makes sense. I can totally hear how the SD-1 is magic with your playing and the 800. Great video.
