It's not a matter of finding an easier way for me. It's more finding a way I can understand and actually do. I wanted to knit for years and just couldn't wrap my mind around how to do it. One day I found a KZbin video on Eastern European knitting and the light bulb in my mind went on. It works for me even though I have been criticized in knitting groups for knitting "backwards". The criticism stopped when they saw the beautiful sweaters I made. Find a way that works for you.

In embroidery I’d recommend a clean back to avoid any long threads that could show in the front of the piece. I also believe that the neatness comes with practice and that no one should fret about it too much and just have fun

In the Netherlands there is a saying: if things don’t go the way they should, then it has to be the way it goes. And I practice this very often 😅 Who cares about the way, it is the result that counts. I love that👍

Couldn’t agree more, if the “rule” or “practice” is stifling or stopping your creativity then think again do it your own way ,,refine if you must latter, being mindful of not creating another rule or practice that might once again be blocking the creative you.

Thank you for this. Starting a new hobby can be so exciting and intimidating all at once. There are the dos and don’ts but nobody speaks of the « why nots ». A shortcut here and there can be very gratifying in getting to the fun parts. With experience and practice, most find their way to the « right » way eventually, but giving oneself permission to « cheat » builds the confidence to persevere. This is one of my favourite videos from you. VERY inspiring. Tfs.

Thanks Kelly. After 2 failed attempts to warp my inkle loom and a mishap after weaving 1 inch of 3rd and successful warp. (now in the bin) I have decided to warp with a thicker cotton thread and variegated thread instead of a pattern, just to start weaving something.

Thank you so much for this video. I have always been able to find another way to get something done. Having said that, I need to find a different way to do Baltic Weaving. Some of it makes no sense to me but I really want to make it work. That part about not worrying about what the back looks like. Does it apply to Baltic Weaving? I bought the Next Steps in Weaving book.

Weaving is really quite different to embroidery as far as the back is concerned. There are some types of weaving where you may have things like long floats on the back and you would rather they not be seen. But, in general, the back of the weaving should look pretty neat and will often look either the same as the front or have a slightly different pattern. Usually, if everything is looking good at the front of your weaving, it will at the back too.

Love this blog. I too can not draw but can paint extremely well. For years I felt that I was cheating by doing a transfer, but I'm finally over it also. My work using transfer as a basis has far exceeded my expectations and I've been thrilled with the end results. I was just looking at ordering some water color pencils, what brand are you using? Thanks as always for all you do and share. Robyn

I am a relatively new weaver ( 1 year) and a slightly more seasoned watercolorist (5 years). I learned both from watching you-tube ☺️. I never liked the drawing process, so I actually use a projector to project a digital image on the wall, which allows me to make the painting any size I want. I find that I “draw” better with a paint brush by painting shapes and shadows once the outline is on the paper. Tracing is definitely NOT cheating! FYI, Another easier way to transfer a drawing is using graphite (not carbon) paper.

I have one like that too. When I wanted to weave a simple checkered band I ended up making separate string heddles attached to hand-sized dowels, like in krokbragd weaving. Worked a treat.

It's only cheating if you copy someone else's art and sell it claiming it is a design by you by signing it. Using a tracing from a photo is another story. Anyone tracing a photo can be using said photo from a spot where many have taken the same photo. It's nature's artwork and free to all who photograph it. To trace the basics of a photo or unsigned picture is not cheating because you still have to be able to color it in and make something of it. Many of us have trouble with proportions and depth in doing a painting. That comes with practice. In my opinion, landscapes are the easiest while people and animals are harder. I used to do painting of pets that the owners had lost. It's difficult because you don't see their faces like the owners do and it's difficult to capture that. Never mastered a specific human. They are the most difficult for me because I can't get the spark the other people recognize in that person because I don't know them personally. Whatever the question with that Kelly, it's only cheating if you take someone else's artwork and claim it as your work. I always give the artist credit if I use their work for a project. I don't like it when my work is claimed by someone else. I can't imagine with all that is said, that you would do that anyway. That is totally not you. I can tell by your videos that you are a fair and honest person. By the way, thanks for sharing your knowledge. I very much appreciate it.

It's a shame to keep that "needle book" in a box somewhere. Don't let "them" (the ones who said it wasn't good enough because it had a messy back) win. Show them your piece is just as beautiful and worthy to be used. ... Why don't you turn it into a pouch or zippered bag instead. Maybe a crossbody cellphone wallet, something for your phone, and some cash or card for that quick dash to the grocery for a quart of milk. Or a zippered pouch to organize the small bits and bobs that always find their way to the bottom of your purse. Show "them" that they aren't going to ruin your beautiful project. Then do a short video so we can see how you didn't let them win!💖🌞🌵😷
