The white smoke on a cold start it just unburnt diesel. Since diesels run off compression, they need heat to burn the fuel completely. That’s why when it warms up the smoke goes away. It’s completely normal.

Lance Marshall glow plugs preheat each cylinder to help the engine start easier. Not sure if his tractor has them though. A lot of larger tractors and heavy equipment don’t have them

That same chain trick works well with just a hi-lift Jack if you don't have a tractor at your disposal. And if you have a fatter pole to pull, like a metal fencepost or old fashioned clothesline post, a couple wraps of chain around usually creates enough friction to pull the sucker straight up.

My sister here in WI has an outdoor wood furnace/boiler. In the summer, they still burn wood to heat water for their hot water heater, but like 10% of what they would in the winter. They really need a firewood processor because they go through 20 cords of wood per year.

What a slick tip for pulling rods. That's awesome! Also, yeah, the smoke is normal. I LOVE the smell of that sweet white belch of smoke... It lets me know it's time to have some fun on the tractor. It's almost as nice a smell as nitro solvent in gun cleaner...

I have a Woodland Mills 8" chipper that I love!!!!! It eats most anything and makes a huge pile of brush into a small pile of chips. You bring the chipper to the work instead of moving a pile of brush. Easier to move with your bucket. Woodland Mills has a very reasonable price point.

My 5055E starts exactly the same Josh, that three-cylinder Deere engine is a cold-blooded thing. The factory (made in India) battery was garbage, turfed it after the first winter and put the bigger Deere Strongbox battery in and its been much better. Can glow the engine for longer without the battery draining.

It's normal for a diesel engine to smoke like that. IT'S COLD! That's why it does it. Your tractor probably doesn't have a catalytic converter on it either. They help reduce smoke. I drove big trucks in the 70s and they always smoked like that when starting up in very cold weather. Also your diesel engine will warm up quicker when you start using the tractor rather than letting it idle. Diesels actually run cooler when idling versus a gas engine which gets hotter when idling. Let the engine run for a minute or so to get the oil circulating and then use it. It will warm up a lot faster than letting it sit idle. Reduces carbon buildup too.

Use your bucket or blade to smooth the muddy ruts NOW while they are still muddy. Leave the blade facing backwards and back up close to the muddy ruts (with blade up) lower blade and drive forward and this will clean it up a little. You then come back when its dryer (not to dry) and smooth it up properly. Hope i have explained that well.

Smoke is normal when it is cold. running the glow plugs a little longer might help it. It will get better in the summer too. It did sound like the battery might be low though. It might need a charge or need to be replaced. it could be that it has set a while so the battery went down too. I used to work on a sawmill that was run by diesel engine. It didn't have glow plugs so it would smoke much more than your tractor did unless we used either to start it.

Yah , unburnt fuel, there's no intake heater grid like on your dodge pickup to get warm air going in there so until the cylinders warm up doesn't burn all the fuel. If you get a block heater plugged in it will help that a lot. You can put it on a timer so your not running it all the time. Just set for a couple hours before you usually go out. And shuts off a if you don't go out that day.

The white smoke at start up on cold days is normal. Your tractor uses what is called a cold start advance. If you look at the left side of your engine you will see a 2 wire plug running from your fuel injection pump up to a sensor on the housing where your upper rad hose is. During a cold start the injector pump will recieve extra fuel to start faster and it also advances the timing. The smoke should clear within 30 sec or so.

Smoke is normal on a cold engine. I didn't like the sound of your starter or the engine on startup. Do you have winter weight oil in the engine? You would be wise to use stiction addative in all your diesels, especially in the winter. I found "Archoil" to be a superior stiction treatment and all my diesels start on all cylinders every time, even at "0" up here in the North East. Best cold start help I have found. I can't plug a block heater in where I park. Great videos, my friend, can't wait for more of the Willys. Positive ground 6 volt, not negative ground. It will turn over better and you may have to polorize the generator after the motor is running.

Why not build in the J hook onto the end of your ground rod? When you’re ready to pull it just hook a loader tooth under the J hook and pull it out. Don’t have to get off the tractor that way. When you’re ready to drive it back in the ground just start it by hand and then push it down with the loader. Thanks.

Great idea....lol..or I could just do it this way instead of spending an hour and $20 welding a hook to a copper ground rod...uh...wait a minute....copper....hmm ...braise? I think I'll take 10 seconds to get off the tractor brotha lol....I do use the bucket to press in ground rods from time to time though
