THROTTLE ONLY BUTTON STUCK-REMOVAL-CAUSE Being new to boating- when my Throttle only button on my Quicksilver 3000 classic left me on the lake- I came to You Tube to learn what was the cause and cure. This video was a good start- and I'm going to tail end from this to try to help others with a similar problem . The Throttle only button is plastic and inexpensive- less than $10 (I paid $4.00 at a merc dealer) . It's function is to disengage the transmission. When you push the plastic button in, it's shaft pushes in on a spring loaded mechanism inside the control body. Note that the Throttle Only button has a recess slot that you can find, rotate it and pry out with a small screwdriver. It has a shaft about 3" long- That shaft engages a spring loaded mechanism inside the controller through a hole inside the throttle handle retaining nut (11/16" ) . If the Throttle only button and shaft is intact- -Mine was- the issue was inside the spring loaded assembly inside the controller mechanism. If one looks inside the controller handle- there is a 11/16 bolt with a hole through it that the throttle only button shaft pushes through- The mechanism inside is supposed to be springloaded- My throttle only button and shaft was intact- but the mechanism did not have much spring back when pushed in. Unfortunately, I went the entire route and disassembled the controller form the metal body, but I could have saved a lot of grief and hours of frustration in the reassembly- I should have simply assumed that the spring mechanism was perhaps dry and rusty - and sprayed large amounts of WD-40 through the shifter and the 11/16 bolt holt and then worked the shifter back and forth, periodically pushing in with a pencil to engage the spring loaded assembly. I took the long route - and disaassembled the mechanism from the housing-just 4 bolts hold it in place, label the 2 shafts- top and bottom. and take photos- step by step. When the mechanism lifts up - be cautious- there is a brass bushing about 1/4" in diameter that is at the bottom of the shift lever assembly- It rotates on some 4" spring steel shims in the body- and is a true SOB to get to reinstall . I would recommend to Not try this step- but 1st spend time spraying lube and trying to work through the handle to get the mechanism to engage- Move the shift lever- Remove the 11/16" bolt and push in with a pencil to see if the mechanism will spring back 3/8" Note- there is a small projection on the assembly that the Throttle-only button should wrap around - If the mechanism has any push-spring -back at all- it likely is seized up internally-continue to apply wd-40 and puch with the pencil to see 3/8" travel. If that does the trick, add 2-3-4-grease- push in with the pencil through the throttle handle, and repeat- -reassemble- install a new throttle only button and also coat with the lube internally . If that does not work-: My marine mechanic tells me that they will not try to get into the internals as parts are not available - but if you undo the 4 screws that hold the controller mechanism to the body, and undo the 2 cables (label the cables and the arms they are connected to - Top cable, bottom cable, The mechanism easily lifts out. The part of the mechanism that the throttle only button slides into has concealed parts- a shaft and a spring- that are retained by a clip- When I got the mechanism out, I did not take out the clip as there is a spring and bearings in the shaft- I pushed in lube with my finger and pushed in with a pencil until the mechanism traveled and sprang back freely- If there was no push back, I would have to assume the internal spring would have to be replaced. The retaining clip would have to be taken off- and I have no clue what would be inside other than a ball bearing on the shaft, a shaft extension, and a spring mechanism .potentially, a broken spring could be replaced inside the mechanism. Fortunately, my mechanism responded to the wd-40 and then the lube. BUT- When I went to reinstall in the housing, I found a 1/4" brass bushing and some 5 pieces of spring steel- about 3-1/2" x 3/16" laying in the housing. I hadn't noticed them when I removed the assembly from the housing- The reinstall became a real pain in the backside- The shift mechanism itself is one assembly that attaches to the housing with just 4 screws- Lube and grease and an easy reinstall- Under that mechanism are the 2 wires from the emergency stop- held in the housing inside - fits neatly inside 2 metal arms- route the wires through the notch in the housing. Reminder- take step by step photos as you go-and disassemble- The brass bushing will seat in the slot in the bottom of the slot in the controller assembly. This is easily overlooked- as it drops out on removal. (or did for me) i found it laying in the bottom of the housing. As the throttle arm gets rotated . this bushing rolls out of it's recess in the controller- It ends up that it is held in place- and rolls -as the shift lever rotates- on the 5 pieces of spring steel -shims? that keep the roller-bushing in contact with the shift lever mechanism These spring steel shims rest inside the metal housing body inside cast in flanges- . I have no idea what the factory reassembly suggests, but we tried for hours to get the assembly to reinstall, with no success. The shim plates -as I refer to them- need to install inside the flanges built into the housing-and they would easily roll and turn under the assembly. The bushing in the controller handle rides on these shim plates as the controller rotates forward and backward-but is kept retained in the handle assembly by these shim plates- We could not get them to install with the controller without them rolling over during reassembly- In the end, i drilled 2-3/16" holes in the outer side of the plastic assembly , and we installed the shims around the roller with a slight curvature- held in place by the holes i drilled with small nails keeping the shims bowed around the bushing and able to drop inside the housing brackets. . We tried a number of attempts before I drilled the holes to retain the shims with the curvature to drop into the housing brackets-and a lot of frustration in 90+ degree temps- Fortunately, my wife has the persistence to persevere.... Keil, wish I had read your comment first. After watching the video a second time, I see where he moved the shift lever forward. Wish he would have mentioned it in the video. . . . now have to buy a new one.

Andrew, your demo showed that you have problems trying to pop out the throttle-only button ... not until you move the shift lever forward are you able to remove this button. (it's recommended to move the shift lever all the way forward).

If you shift the handle all the way forward in gear you won't have to worry about breaking the button.

Can you please explain to me what a needle nose screwdriver is? And you mention an automotive boat clip? Is that a automotive clip or a boat clip? But it’s not actually a clip. It’s an 11/16 nut, is that correct?

Put the handle in forward throttle only mode BEFORE prying out the button. Otherwise, you will break the button and have to buy a new one.

What about putting the button back in? Should the handle still be forward? Mine still has all its teeth, but keeps falling out. When I push it back in, it just pops out on its own. I don’t know how to get it to stay in cause it’s not visibly broken. Thanks.

Turns out my 3000 isn't the same as thia one and I snapped the plastic rod that connects ro burron when I followed the instructions. I wish I had known they are all not the same

I must be doing something wrong because every time I’ve taken mine apart the darn thing breaks- either the tabs break off the end or the button breaks off of the shaft- EVERY DARN TIME 🤷🏼‍♂️
