I've worked four different construction sites on DTES from the last two years at Woodward's, Gore/Hastings; Cambie/Hastings & 138 E Hastings. I was living the area 37 years ago & fully entrenched in the lifestyle which was very different back then. No recycling, no street market, no dumpster diving, etc. Seriously changed but no hesitation to work or come down here but my personal promise is nothing after 5 pm if I can help it. There is still a human side to this area & I make sure weather working or meeting up with a friend for coffee I still exchange a hello & be respectful to the people who have no choice but to live here. One thing I noticed is that for the most part ppl are moving & going about their business, good or bad. The alleyway too has not got a lot of activity - and rain makes no difference, it's usually very active & bustling.

Most things about a good Canada are not true, Including clean cities - beaches, and forests. It's a big lie. The first time I arrived in Vancouver in 2018, I was shocked. As soon as I left the airport door, I saw tissue, disposable glasses, and other garbage left in the city. The further I went, the more I saw them. Before I moved to Canada, I lived in Georgia, Armenia, Turkey, Serbia, The United States, and for a short time in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Netherland, Germany, and England, but I have never seen the amount of garbage that people leave in different Canadian cities. Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and Quebec are no less than Vancouver. Canadian and Canada Governments don't care about this tragedy. I think everything that says about Canada as a clean and powerful culture is not true. You don't need to travel to Canada to see this. Just watch some videos about walking in downtown Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and Quebec. You will find the truth. Impossible for you to walk in a Canadian city and you don't see the dark side of that. Everywhere you will see garbage. You will never see this in Europe, Australia, the United States, Japan, and Korea. This amount of waste is not even seen in Malaysian, Indonesian, or Thailand cities. It is impossible for you to use public transport and not see a lot of garbage at stations or on the route. You will be surprised to find a lot of garbage even in the woods - by the rivers and on the beaches in Canada.

I have a strong dislike for addicts because they often steal from businesses including the one I work at. I dislike how people often place addicts into the same category as regular homeless people even though druggies are far worse and usually don't end up homeless due to lack of money, and are far more likely to be violent and commit crimes. I dislike how addicts make areas unlivable due to the unsanitary conditions they create, and the unnerving feeling I get around them due to them being unpredictable. Lastly, I dislike how people often overlook druggies' bad behaviour and turn a blind eye to their bad behaviour all while ignoring honest hard working people like me who are the real victims due to these druggies.
@Pedro-do-Canada2 жыл бұрын
Then what exactly do you propose, mr. Apples? That the people in charge start putting "these druggies" in a hole when they run out of prison cells? Cause, you know, that's literally something that happened around these parts not so long ago. There's only so much a government can do, and you can't force a person to go to rehab... "These druggies" aren't the ones making your life miserable, bud. You are not a victim of them. You're a victim of late stage capitalism (as 99% of us are). The issue is more complex than you think it is, and elaborating why you despise "these druggies" isn't helping anybody.

@@MyWalkAround That said, I'd say DTES (downtown east side) has a lot of misconceptions. It's not a very violent area, for the busy-ness, and police presence. Hastings might not be the scariest place in Canada, but it's gotta be the saddest. The whole area is like, sort of a win win though, making the best of a bad situation... This area needs a few more Safe Injection Sites and it will be alright.
@JunkBondTrader3 жыл бұрын
If only it were that easy! Vancouver probably has more services for addicts than almost anywhere in the world. This is a decades long problem, there is an injection site and clean supplies given. It's about keeping addicts safe, not cleaning up the streets. There would also be way too many addicts to accommodate and it's not like they wouldn't just go right back outside again once they're done shooting up, they can't just live inside of them. We'd need a whole block of injection sites to accommodate everyone, and real estate in Vancouver is second only to like London and Hong Kong. Virtually the only people that live in this area are addicts, homeless, mentally ill, or in recovery. That said, most addicts don't even go to the injection site, they just get their supplies from there. Older, more vulnerable people tend to shoot up at "insite". But most would rather shoot up outside and be out n about doing there thing rather then sitting in some clinic. They still wouldn't accommodate all the meth addicts who mostly smoke, and don't need a safe site as IV overdoses are very rare compared to H/fent. The crack addicts. The pills. The mentally ill. Then the cost of the injection sites, the nurses etc... The tens or hundreds of millions of dollar cost of purchasing a lot downtown where every inch is spoken for. The injection site down there isn't even at capacity, they'll probably build another if and when they need to. There is free rehab for any Canadian on income assistance, they just don't wanna get clean mostly. I was lucky enough to take advantage if the services to get off meth years back. Lucky me!

It's good to show this side of Canada- I live abroad and I feel people have zero clue just what reality can be in Canada- it's not a glorified safe country where everyone gets along... it has the good and bad coming in from the world and I believe it is because of our laws & regulations that while not be perfect are there and enforced. I challenge any Canadian that feels Canadian laws aren't up to world standards to go live abroad in a developing country and see just how good Canadians have it especially since we have the world living in one country.
@JunkBondTrader3 жыл бұрын
I LIKE our lax laws. We have laws that make sense, and are lax on enforcing ones that don't, like drugs. It's very easy to not get charged with drugs in Canada and the penalties are super light. Makes sense since the crime is victimless. You're right, is what I'm saying. I'm agreeing. People complain, and have never even stepped foot outside of Canada. I saw a dude above saying we're a third world country lol. I'd love to see him grow up in central south America or something. People don't realize how lucky we are. I don't ever worry about police, and I don't ever worry about crime.

Poverty united with compounding mental health concerns 😟 everyday life of what's supposed to be seen as drug addiction but through the eyes of the addict its another day in paradise otherwise known as reality. Where small doses of pain killing toxins are sought after to live another poor day in poverty.

A very different walking tour! Fascinating sure but.. Don't put yourself in danger though for the sake of a KZbin video..
@MyWalkAround5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dave! As far as danger, I agree you have to watch your surroundings but as you can see in the video, people pretty much keep to themselves and don't bother others that they don't know.

@@MyWalkAround Some guy only in shorts got bear mace in the face which put him in a fearful and chaotic state. His face was covered completely orange from the bear mace running around recklessly. 3 cops come surround him with weapons drawn. One of the weapon was a bean bag shotgun. So now he's freaking out even more cause he was innocent and seeing the weapons elevated his heart rate. He's still running around screaming "Why are you trying to kill me, your suppose to help me" without and words from the 3 cops there. One fired the bean bag shotgun hitting his back and he later died from a heart attack.

There are all sorts of housing, medical and social services available to the mentally ill and drug addicted people of Canada. The problem in treatment lies in the nature of individual rights and freedoms allowed to citizens under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the individuals will to seek this treatment. It can not be forced on them. Mentally ill and drug addicted people are not capable of summoning the discipline required to properly maintain a home, let alone maintaining a responsible administrative life of a normal citizen. They prefer the streets to the boring minutiae of institutional medical and psychiatric therapy combined with the rigors of daily domestic duties in the maintaining of a proper functioning dwelling.
