Nagas were free people until the British came and colonized them in 1878 after successfully suppressing the Angami uprising. Although, Naga-land was never fully conquered by the British (only 1/3 of Naga-land was colonized by the British). Bad things have happened, no doubt about that, mistakes have been made then and there. Some with justifications, many without I suppose. That's not my entire point.
