Andrew, I knew when you said a couple of years ago about the engine switch you had tested the Briggs engines to meet your quality standards, which are hands down top of the line, and knew Eastonmades reputation was on the line so to speak. I am glade to hear the great news on the 2 year report. Keep up the amazing work and great videos you keep putting out. 👍🏻👍🏻

If I'm not mistaken, Vanguard is a collaborative venture between Briggs & Diahatsu. Many, if not all components are made in Japan and only assembled in the US for last few years. Diahatsu is a subsidiary of Toyota. So, yeah, Vanguard isn't just a cheap disposable B&S engine you might see on a Walmart lawnmower. Vanguard is a very different animal. We run the EFI Vanguards on all of our commercial mowers & have had very few if any issues some of them approaching 1000 hours & some already over that.

My 12-22 with the Vanguard is very, very good. I had a 12.5HP Briggs I/C on my last splitter for 15 years, and it was still going strong when I sold it(with countless hours, I might add...) I like a Honda as well, but I'm no snob... I'll take what works.

Andrew! If you remember, I was a nah-sayer when I ordered my Axis. You made the decision to switch motors after I made my deposit but before it shipped. You talked me off the ledge and even got me in touch with another well known fella we won’t mention 🤣 that had nothing but good things to say about Briggs. I remember the conversation with you very well and along with a lot of other things you said, “Mike, you trust me with all the other components, TRUST me with this engine.” I did…and the darn thing works every time. I’ve had to change spark plugs and adjust the carburetor but that’s normal stuff. If you have any nah-sayers, feel free to have them reach out to me. It’s been a great motor.

My family have used Honda powered pumps on the fleet of water trucks back the the G42&65 honda flat head days in the 70s. Started having problems with new gx390's and not being able to get bits and feel there quality has been slipping with a few total duds so ended up going with 18hp V twin vanguards and have just ordered the first 14hp single from vanguard to see how that one goes. Have been very happy with Vanguard and good to knock Honda off there high horse of not giving a crap about there customers anymore. They used to my uncle said but not in my time

As with everything you do Andrew you only have the customers best interests in mind. My old splitter had a Honda engine on it and it worked fine. My Ultra has the Briggs engine and it works just as fine. The difference being if you had have stuck with Honda and not made the switch I would probably still be waiting for my splitter and your business would not be doing as well. Two thumbs up to you. I've had a 5-11 on order since last June and I'm looking forward to picking it up this summer. Since your name goes on every machine, I'm confident I'll be getting a great unit! I'm surprised Honda doesn't try harder given that you're ordering hundreds of engines and only growing, but I'm not worried at all about a Vanguard.

My only hesitation is that I had a bad experience once with a Briggs on a 5000 watt generator. The generator was out of warranty but I was willing to pay to have it fixed. Unfortunately the local Briggs repair shop couldn’t figure it out and it became a brick. It was about 5 years old. You pointed out the difference between the economy line and the commercial line of engine which makes sense. Funny though how one bad experience can turn you off. I’ll keep my fingers crossed if I decide to move forward. Thanks for posting

I’m a Honda guy also and my dad is too. That being said I like Briggs also. Had 2 now on salt spreaders and they fire up in -25 like it’s summer. In -40 sometimes I put a heat gun on the cylinder for a few mins and it will fire up also. I know my friends Honda generators won’t fire up in -25 to easy if at all lots of times. When I got my fist sander I wish it had a Honda and now if I had to order another sander tomorrow and choose between Honda and Briggs I would go for the Briggs because I think they are better for cold weather starting and I’ve never had a issue. I let them sit outside from spring to fall and leave the gas inside the Carb and they fire up every fall perfectly for the last 12 years. Hard to beat that

So far, there are no issues with the Briggs on the Axis what so ever. I probably would have gone with the Honda if I had the choice at the time, but 2 seasons in, I would say it's a flip of a coin. I bought a Snapper push mower years ago that has a high-end Briggs on it. I'm really impressed with that engine. Runs nicer than the comparable Honda I had. Sold the Honda kept the Snapper. Briggs makes different price range of engines. The problem with that is you're always judged by the lesser line of product and you do have to figure in operator issues as well. The general public is really hard on stuff with little consideration for maintenance. Most everyone purchasing one of your splitters has made a substantial investment that is going to be cared for. It makes a difference.

We have an old splitter with an ic Briggs it has like 10 million hrs on it. Still runs well. Definitely not a Honda or vanguard though. Daddy has a 35hp and a 40hp on a couple commercial mowers and has had no issues at all. He alway said you can’t beat a Honda but a vanguard surely give them a good run for their money.

In my opinion, there is a bigger difference in quality in the Briggs family of engines from grade to grade than the other brands. My last consumer grade Briggs was acting very odd at times. Seemed like it wanted to try running backwards when pulling it over. That alone soured me on the Briggs brand. Had a Briggs Intek V-twin lawn tractor and it was flawless. No idea why there is such a disparity in quality in the Briggs brand compared to others. When I got my other brand splitter it was because they had a Honda engine and you had switched to Briggs. That and their proximity to where I live made the buying decision. Now that you've had time with Briggs on your machines, I feel way different about the Briggs Vanguard.

Andrew, I fully understand and support your decision to go with Briggs. I own Honda and prefer to stay with one brand and the same model. My question is why can't you do both brands of engines? Yes, I understand that would cause a longer wait for a Honda. Also, what is wrong with your Honda Canadian supplier? Can't you contact someone higher in Honda? This doesn't seem to be as big of a problem here in the states. I feel I'm not being told everything.
