Easy and cheap direct debits for bank switching and rewards

If you're a current account geek like me and love to take advantage of all the different switching offers and monthly rewards you could find yourself short of the direct debits required to claim the free cash.
Well in this video I'll share half a dozen easy extra direct debits you can add to your accounts. They're all cheap, and in fact they're either different ways of paying for things you already use, or ways to send money to yourself.

I highly recommend just setting up Charities with RSPCA And the Red Cross Do a direct debit with them £2 each a month £4 total Wait 2-5 days odd then it should show up in ur direct debits boxes and it’ll be an active direct debit in ur bank account. You can switch ur account get the incentive Quickly then cancel ur direct debit You can choose to cancel the direct debit Or allow the £4 to go through it’s only £4 one off if u wanna be nice give a little to charity.

The only one I would add is that you can add a direct debit to your oyster card so it will automatically top up your oyster card when goes below a certain number. This means that you do not have to keep manually topping up your oyster card.

Hey mate, thanks for the great videos! I'm actually having trouble doing this... a lot of the savings accounts like Chip and Moneybox don't allow dual citizens. I can do the credit card ones but I need a couple more! Please can you give extra ideas of direct debits?

Hi Andy, this video is really helpful! As I am working abroad and rent the property including bills, there doesn't have any opportunity for me to set direct debit to get the rewards from Barclays every month. As following the instruction, I set up a PayPal account to pay my phone bill every month (giffgaff). The other one I set the Barclays account to pay my Barclay cards monthly, just a bit confused that whether this will be count as a successful direct debit?

Some require a bill to be paid by direct debit and the old current account to be closed to get a switching bribe. If you pay a charity by payroll giving they lose money if you pay directly as it removes their benefits...

Hi Andy with the PayPal direct debit can you top PayPal up with different accounts monthly? So say a DD from Natwest for £2, £2 from Santander and the DD counting on all the accounts you do it for?

Hi Andy. I have one monthly direct debit set up (Nationwide) to pay the full balance of my credit card each month. Is it possible to reduce the figure taken from Nationwide by setting up additional monthly direct debits from other banks at a fixed amount (eg: Bank A at £100, Bank B at £100, Bank C at £100), in order to count as 3 additional DD's? Please don't say "I wish!"

How does this work? If I say pay a family member a direct debit every month and switch to Santander, if I set that direct debit up again does that count as one? Or does it have to be a new direct debit?

Park Christmas Savings allow you to set up payments via DD, but it's not a fast option, as you need to wait till the 1st day of next to month before it becomes active. Payments are taken on a monthly basis only. Shame, as I was hoping to use it for a switch , which requires 2 x active DDs this month.

For the banks offering a switch bonus provided there are active direct debits from the account you’re switching from, how long do these direct debits need to be running for? I can’t find anything explicitly stated on the T&Cs for any of these.

Great video thanks Andy, with the NationWide account you cannot have used a switching deal in the last year or so. Therefore how could you do a joint and invidivual switch over as the one that comes second would not comply with this rule? Thoughts?

I find fascinating we can switch bank accounts and get something in reward, or maybe open a new one just for the sake of getting something back. Unfortunately I found out this world too late (it was January 2020) and after that, all the interest rates dropped to nearly 0. Btw, there is always I question in my head that never found answer: am I allowed to open a bank account and then switch it to a different bank/building society to get the switch bonus? Never understood if it work only with your "main" account or any is fine

Yep, this will work! You could open up any old account to switch over. Some offers require you to switch direct debits so look out for those. A couple of accounts worth thinking about for this - Club Lloyds (get free cinema tickets and then switch) - TSB Spend and Save (get £30 cashback after about 4 months from Quidco)

They would be standing orders not direct debits

Hi Andy I really appreciate the videos thanks to you I have opened a Monzo account and now am thinking of switching to nation wide to claim their offer for 100 pound or 125 pound if youve been a customer with nationwide before. It says on the article that you can open a saving account with nation wide then wait a day and switch after to get the extra 25. So I plan on doing that. But I have a question for you and that's that if on my newly opened Monzo account I were to switch my direct debits from my original Barclays account to the Monzo would I then be able to do the switch from Monzo to nationwide to get the most of this deal without leaving Barclays because id rather lose Monzo and reopen than Barclays for simplicity. Is this a good idea or even possible? If I switch my direct debits to Monzo is there an amount of time that needs to have passed for this to work? Like maybe 1 direct debit payment would have had to have gone out of Monzo first I'm guessing ? Any advice thankyou

Hi Ricky. So Nationwide says you need to have paid out two Direct Debits before the switch, so you need to allow time for this to happen. If you do that to Monzo and switch, that'll work fine - though there might be restrictions on when you can reopen a Monzo account. I think it's 30 days.

Hi Andy. Can you tell me how do I create a direct debit for Paypal? (Do I firstly have to link my bank account to my PayPal account, and then secondly send money from my bank account into my PayPal account?) If I link my bank account to my PayPal account, am I creating a Direct Debit? (Is that right?) The reason, I ask is because PayPal no longer provides an option to add money into your PayPal account via Direct Debit anymore. (The option/feature in PayPal has been removed and is no longer available anymore.) How do I work around this?

As long as it has left in the last month before the switch I think it'll count. Longer than that and it might not... (but it might!)

I was looking at various ones one money saving expert the other day, pretty sure I recall you having to transfer the direct debits when you switch, i.e having them setup prior.

@@thedarkshogun88 I thought the same. I asked Santander on Twitter and they said it can be set up after your switch if you don't have 2 from the former bank whereas when some say otherwise. Ive just walked into the bank couple of mins ago and Santander customer service said that I either bring the 2 from the former bank or if 1 or none from the former, than within 90 days, I have to setup 2 direct debits within the new Santander account before they pay me the switch money benefit.

But either way, the prove will be after Ive switched, create the 2 DD and see if I get that switch money. Will let you know how it goes. Watch this space :)

I recently found you and am enjoying your videos. However this direct debit hoops banks want you to jump through seems like a bit of a faff. Is it all worth the time for £100 ISH per switch? I'd love to see a video of what you make on average from switching, cashback, credit cards etc over the course of a year. This would make it clear if switching etc is worth it or not.

You don't think a couple minutes work is worth £100? It's like equivalent to £600 per hour if it takes you 10 minutes and you get £100. Most people are earning like £10-15 per hour... Unless you're the CEO of Lloyd's Bank it's probably worth your time lol

You don't have to sacrifice monzo. Create another savings account In monzo and close that specific account. No need to close monzo on the whole I guess

Thank you sir. Very good information. I would suggest possibly wealthify. I have a virtually risk free investment of £50 cash back after one year. It is invest £50 and keep a ice £50 in at all times to get the bonus after one year so even if your profile loses the money so long as its above £50 after a year then the bonus is paid. It also let's a direct debit be set up. I don't know if it is doing this currently but it has come and gone more than once so may be available. In essence it is risk free but I invested slightly more and after 9 months I'm down about £6 mainly on the adventurous ethical plan, so it is a small loss but markets have been all over the place and in March hope to get the bonus. Obviously I don't want to get people risking the money but it's there just in case. I think they have refer a friend too with bonus for yourself and the friend. Direct debit from there will be useful though. That is just an FYI. Cheers

Yes this happened with me. It's because plum only supports the most popular banks and not new/unpopular banks. For example when I try switching to coop bank I think plum was not compatible
