Happy National Egg Cream day (March 15th)!!! The timing couldn't have worked out better as I had this in the works and actually was able to put this together for this special day.
In this simple and short video we will make an authentic Chocolate Egg Cream with 3 ingredients that everyone should have access to no matter where they are. So you can enjoy this classic favorite beverage of New York anywhere in the world.
The ingredients you’ll need are:
• Milk (whole milk is recommended as it will give you that thick white foam on the top of your egg cream after mixing the ingredients together.) - If you want a healthier version, you can use a milk alternative. I have used soy milk with great results. Results meaning a thick head that hold the straw up, like you see at the end of the video. Use the same proportions of the ingredients as shown below.
• Soda water or seltzer. I use the soda water I make with my Sodastream.
• Chocolate syrup (Fox’s U-bet chocolate syrup seems to be the most recommended for the most authentic flavor, but if you can’t find it near you, I think any other chocolate sauce will do.)
NOTE: All of these ingredients should be chilled as cold as possible so that the soda will produce more fizz, which is an important part of this drink. You should even put the glass in the freezer for 30 minutes or more before making this.
Growing up in NY during the 80s I used to see egg creams sold at a lot of different shops.
A friend worked at a magazine/candy shop and used to make me one on occasion, so it’s something I enjoyed on occasion growing up.
Sadly, these days, it seems the numbers of places offering egg creams have dropped quite a bit in New York, so it would be rarer to find it elsewhere in the US, which is a shame because it is a tasty drink. Come on... a chocolate soda!!! you can’t go wrong. Despite being named “Egg Cream” there aren’t any eggs or cream used in the drink and in this video you’ll learn to make a classic NY chocolate egg cream with the 3 simple ingredients.
One thing to keep in mind for this recipe so that you can successfully make this in any size glass or cup is that for this recipe you’ll look at the ingredients as 1/5ths, so fill 1/5th of the cup with chocolate syrup, 2/5ths with milk and the remaining 2/5ths with the soda water. Fill your glass up accordingly, well maybe fill up to almost the top of the glass so it doesn't spill out, but chances are, as you stir/chop the drink, it will foam up a bit, that's normal. If you want more chocolate, swap out portions of the chocolate and the milk, so make it 2/5ths chocolate syrup with 1/5th milk but keep it at 2/5ths soda water/seltzer.
