How many beginners have a planer?

You can make a project like this without a planer. You can sand the wood by hand. Or, if you want to go for a more rustic look, don't sand it at all. I've also seen people on KZbin build their own planer/surfacer and power it with a drill.

When you checked for square and it was slightly off how did you adjust it? It looks as if you said it needs to be adjusted and skipped ahead.

When you can the 45° angle on the end of the 2 boards, how far in did you measure or did you just wing it?
