Part 1: Adding Bevels
Select Your Object:
Open your scene and select the object you want to bevel.
Add Bevel:
Go to the Modeling menu set.
Click on Edit Mesh -Bevel or use the shortcut Shift + Ctrl + B.
The object's edges will now have a bevel applied.
Adjust Bevel Attributes:
With the object still selected, open the Attribute Editor (Ctrl + A).
In the polyBevel tab, adjust these parameters:
Segments: Increase this to add more divisions to your bevel for smoother edges.
Fraction: Controls the width of the bevel.
Mitering: Choose between different miter types if your edges overlap.
You can also use the Bevel Tool Options window (Ctrl + Shift + B) to fine-tune your settings before applying.
Clean Up:
If needed, adjust the geometry manually using vertex or edge editing tools to refine the shape.
Part 2: UV Unwrapping
Open UV Editor:
Go to UV - UV Editor to open the UV Editor window.
Automatic UV Mapping:
Select your object and go to UV - Automatic. This will create a basic UV layout by projecting from multiple planes.
Planar, Cylindrical, or Spherical Mapping (Optional):
For more control, use UV -Planar, UV - Cylindrical, or UV - Spherical mapping depending on your object shape.
Unfold UVs:
With your UV shell selected, go to UV - Unfold. This will relax your UVs to minimize distortion.
Check the UV layout in the UV Editor to ensure it looks proportionate and doesn't overlap.
Layout UVs:
Go to UV - Layout to automatically arrange the UV shells within the 0 to 1 UV space.
Check for Distortions:
Apply a checker texture to your model (create a lambert material with a checker texture) to visualize any stretching or overlapping in the UVs.
Finalize:
Make any manual adjustments by moving, scaling, or rotating UV shells to optimize the layout.
Tips for Beginners:
Bevel Tool: Keep your segments low initially to maintain a manageable polycount.
UV Unwrapping: Avoid overlapping UVs for texture painting and shading.
Checker Texture: Use it as a guide to see how evenly your texture will be applied.
These steps should get you started with beveling and UV unwrapping in Maya. Let me know if you need more details on any specific part!
