Turnips make the best gratin I have ever tasted. I could eat them just boiled with butter, salt and pepper. The top greens are tasty etc. etc. I love turnips :) Rutabaga tops are just as good, and most garden folks just throw them out...NOOOOO :) Actually this holds true to all brassicas...broccoli, cauliflower etc. Chicken pesto...what can I say...good.

Here in NZ the Māori (indigenous people) use watercress in their cooking. It grows wild and is plentiful with a smaller leaf and slightly different flavour here. It’s used widely in boil up which is traditional dish of pork bones watercress, potatoes and dumpling. Or in toroi which is a preserving dish made by cooking mussels and watercress left to ferment in class jars. So watercress cooked like this is familiar and delicious . Using it with basil is something I’ve not done and must try. Go great together I would think.

Gee Rick passed your site on to south African mates you now have a whole rugby team salivating
I have never eaten turnips, except pickled. That would be Scotlands neeps.I doubt you have much time to watch KZbin, but an American home cook, she is good called Mandy in the Making often does chicken pesto type dishes.I think most people really buy jar pesto,as it’s very popular here in the States. One of the reasons I make my own is because you get such big bunches when you buy it in the supermarket, and if you don’t process it you end up throwing it out.😊

That chicken in creamy pesto & Parmesan sauce looks delicious Rik, I’ve noticed that the chicken breasts you get are so much larger than are normally available here in the UK. Re the Swede/Turnip debate, when I was growing up in Scotland 🏴 in the 60’s we called the white fleshed variety swedes & the orange fleshed ones turnips - totally confusing I know!🙄 Also you are correct about turnips being grown purely to feed the sheep in winter, my Irish Dad came from a farming family going back a couple of generations, when my Mum used to make a big pot of mashed turnip (swede) he’d always recognise the smells coming from the kitchen when he got home from work & would shout out - “Don’t be giving me any of that sheeps food!” 😆 & he meant it! We kids all loved it, as did our Mum, but he would never have it on his plate, tbh I don’t think he’d ever actually tasted it … but he was adamant!🤨😠 Weird thing is my Mum was a traditional home cook & made huge pots of soup a couple of times a week in winter, & he’d quite happily enjoy a big plate of soup most days before his main course, obviously quite oblivious to the fact that hidden amongst the carrots, onions, leeks, potatoes, herbs & pulses etc was a big plump turnip, finely diced beyond recognition of course!🥣😋🤭😆😂 Thanks as always Rik & hope you have a great weekend. xx 👨🏼🍳👍👌💖
