Maybe a gentle handwash and no blocking would allow the yarn to relax? Edit: further down the comments Tuba says she used a larger (yarn? and) hook for the video, so choose a hook that gives you the result you want, maybe. There are no hard and fast rules in crochet, it's a very flexible, adaptable craft; and best of all, the Crochet Police don't come round and inspect your work!

I always messure up a bassenet or crib and then by how many chains to multiple i know how many chains i need to start with. @@DutchieBudget just thought I'd help if I can! Other patterns I've seen that use this stitch use multiples of 2 when chaining. I 100% agree with not cutting your yarn especially if you're a beginner which this aims to be for. I'd say do however many stitches you need as a multiple of 2 (AKA 20, 40, 200 etc.) then add 2 for the beginning. Hope this helps!
