In this video we take a look at how I use a custom support plugin in Cura to allow me to place supports only where I need them. This is such an awesome plugin that is very handy for times when Cura is not able to create supports exactly how you want them. After you watch this video you will be off and creating custom supports of your own!

This is probably one of the most usefull videos. I never realized to go to the marketplace to look for add ons like this that are ultra helpful. Just an idea for ya, you should do a video dedicated to marketplace add-ons that are handy to have. I never would have known this existed and I'm sure theres alot of others who don't either. If theres any add-ons you advise I'd love to know about em. Great video man

You can also change the support angle. If you increase the angle closer to 90 degrees the support will only form under angles that are greater than that number. This custom support plug in is also a good tool to have for some situations

Thanks! I know this is a 3 year old video but this is what was pissing me off about Cura among many other things. I couldn't figure out how to do custom supports. I forget that stupid Cura doesn't include a lot of funtions I desire without installing plugins. I've been using idea maker for my Artillery Sidewinder X2's and the flashforge slicer for my adventurer 3C. BOTH slicer give the ability to place supports and make it SOOOOO EASY. I can't understand WHY Cura and a lot of other slicers can't be closer to how Idea Maker is. I'm only using Cura because Idea Maker doesn't have any profiles yet for Elegoo printers. I have the Elegoo Neptune Max 3 and having to use Cura or Prusa Slicer makes using the Neptune Max 3 a pain.

Muchas gracias.

Uh......the original setting this guy had was for support hangs of 45 degrees, that's why it took a million hours and 20 pounds of support. I use 70 at the lowest for overhang angle. Likely would have got literally the same exact result as the custom block setup.

This kinda ruins the overall look of the model though and this specific cube-placing method seems very case specific. You just added in a simple geometric shape that means the finished product is modified from the original look, and this is not ideal for other types of models. Why not add something closer to resin-branching supports that stray away from the model and can be easily removed, leaving the model as it looked digitally?

Is it possible to do this in reverse? 90% of the Cura generated supports, in my case, are needed. I would like to remove just one of them. In my case, creating 9 out of 10 is much more time consuming than just printing all 10 supports. Is there a way to use the recommended supports and just get rid of some of it?

My version of cura will not allow me to edit the created support block. That is, I can move it, but not make it longer/shorter in any direction. Additionally, when I slice it, the program adds its own supports on top of mine. This creates supports where I did not want them. I can block them, but how do I stop the program from adding more supports?

In my experience, PVA isn't all it's cracked up to be. I have an Ultimaker S3, the PVA keeps breaking at the feed causing the print to stop, and of course on reloading the PVA and restarting, the print, it gets destroyed (2+ Hours to do a 10 min print). The removal of PVA (i.e. "Water Soluble) takes longer than the print. Example: 1/2" square part that takes 22 minutes to print (with support, 11 minutes without) takes 20+ minutes to dissolve the PVA in an ultrasonic cleaner (longer if just sitting in warm water).

Even like this like you explained still not so comfortable, as you can definitely can not scale the support to an accurate size to avoid bonding with the piece or to be to small to support anything How ever in FlashForge slicer you generate to auto support and from there you can delete the part that dosent actually require support. Nice simple and can’t be easy enough that this While every other slicer requires a lot more 😢

So I print the little Groku statue that is on Thingverse and it had supports built in the gcode file. My brand new CR10 pro v2 ( my first 3d printer) printed what I assumed were the bases for the supports, but the somewhere during the print, the supports just turned to strings spewed out of the nozzle. Thankfully the small statue still printed fine without the aid of the supports, but I'm concerned for the nest time I actually need them. Any thoughts?
