Easy DIY Custom Closet For Under $200 Bucks

If you’ve been following along on our little home reno journey then you know that the main level is done, the upstairs is done, and the 70's basement of my dreams is also officially done. So now I'm moving on to the parts of the house that no one really gets to see except for Ben and I. I'm starting with Ben's closet because he deserves it, but also because he has way more clothes than I do. Our closets are pretty small and the storage isn’t great in our little 1940's Cape Cod, so it was definitely time for an upgrade. We were shopping around for different prefab custom closet designs and they're pretty expensive for what they are so I felt like I could just do myself for way less money. Plus, I want want to show that it's pretty easy to do this yourself if you want to give your closet a little freshen up without a huge budget. A little backstory on me ... I’ve been living and working in NYC for the past twenty years, but in 2020 I decided to buy my first home in Milwaukee with my boo. That way he has a place to call home since he already lives here and I'll have a little escape to go to when I have downtime from work. I’m definitely not a carpenter by any means, but I do think I can accomplish what I have planned for this little house. I love the new closet design!! A big upgrade! I'm curious where you guys will keep the laundry hamper now that he is using the space differently? I'm having a debate rn about whether to keep mine in the closet or get a nicer/stylish hamper to keep in my room and free up more closet space.

thanks katie! good question. i bought a some storage bins and put one on the bottom shelf of the unit i built and one on each side, so ben has a few of them to put dirty laundry in. i like the idea of keeping laundry hidden for our house, but your thoughts on a cute hamper is a good option too! thanks for watching :)

HI, too bad u r not anywhere close to the tristate area. Btw, how wide and deep was this closet ? And how wide were the shelves in the middle. I have 3' x 8' small closet.

hey! that’s literally the exact same size closet i did this for. think the depth is around 2 feet, so i used 1x12 lumber for the built-in shelving unit. if you end up trying to do something similar, hit me up if you have any questions :) thanks so much for watching!
