You're definitely not a hack! I've seen mechanics at dealerships do the same stuff you do! Thanks for what you do!

You gotta try an induction bolt heater on this exact same broken bolt situation. Or rusted exhaust / manifold bolts. GAME CHANGER!

Two things about that bracket, you can press that bearing out and buy a new one and install it very carefully, and if you don't want to do that just leave it be and still keep ac and go to electric fans, I ran I to thus issue finding one for my jeep, I ended up finding one, they are out there, buy a couple if you want, they dont go bad fast take a couple hundred thousand miles, I can assure you that, but the tips he's giving for these xjs are common issues and are not a end all be all if you get into these situations, thanks dex for your uploads..I watch them for entertainment but I've ran into every single problem you have also buildings xjs I've torn apart and put back together 3 xjs that's plenty, with basically oem.parts except lifts wheels and tires and exhaust, and xj with its oem parts are reliable and good, and the 4.0 is great the way it was made.

Omix-Ada 17104.83 is the part number for the bearing you can replace it with nothing but a bearing puller a ball joint press a socket and a hammer.

Weld a nut to the broke off bolts. The heat cycleling breaks down the aluminum oxidation and you screw it right out. No need to coil it
@papatomsthoughtsАй бұрын
I think he is showing DIY if you do not have a welder available. 😊😊😊
@cpthillbillyАй бұрын
What I read on heli-coils is that you screw it in until it is flush with the top of the threads. Then you use the same tool that you used to screw it in to break the tip off of the bottom. A small screw driver would work as well. They break off fairly easily. There's another type of thread repair that I like better than heli-coils, its called Timeserts or EZ Lok. You can back them out if something gets crazy and you gotta. FYI, the EZ LOKs come pre-loaded with red locktite on the threads.
@BrandonZ55XJАй бұрын
Should try welding a nut on it some time dex. And back the old bolt out. Would save time if it works for you. Usually with aluminum it heat cycles and loosens the bolts up.
@BrandonZ55XJАй бұрын
Or is this a video you are trying to get some advertising money from? For the helocoils
@djfaberАй бұрын
Yeah, I agree, weld a nut on it, it'll expand and shrink the bolt and it should come right out, Works even if they're busted off flush.
@luxstar4lifeАй бұрын
That never works on those brackets

I have a bad-azz flux core welder with adjustable arc-force. It can produce an arc that's hotter than the bowels of Hell. I use it to weld a washer onto broken bolts, then a nut onto the washer. It transfers so much heat so quickly, snapped bolts offer to unscrew themselves rather than face another blast of the hot stuff. Pretty much.

Cobalt drill bits are the ones I buy from harbor freight. They last long, stay sharp. Get a lot of different sizes in the pack. 60 bucks, but it's worth it I think.
@WalkeranzАй бұрын
If you totally screw it up, drill all the way through, extra long bolts with nuts at the bottom
@projectbumblejeep4190Ай бұрын
With as much thread as was on that bracket, I would soak the broken bolts with Deep Creep or PB Blaster for a while, then heat the bracket (MAP torch) then use good vice grips before resorting to drill and tap. But this works too.
@VC-TVАй бұрын
You had a good opportunity to just weld a nut onto both of those and get em out that way, i avoid helicoils as much as possible, would only use them in this case where you want to retain the oem bolts everything else i would just tap a new thread the next size up
@VC-TVАй бұрын
Steel bolts get stuck very easy in aluminum parts, even brand new you can tell thats its rough when mixing the two
@paulb8264Ай бұрын
In my opinion, skip the Heli-coils and get E-Z Loks instead. E-Z Loks are a proper thread insert that is a soild piece of metal, not some silly little spring thing you pray stays in.

So I have a 89 Comanche (bought it new an a 89 xj (going 250 miles to ge it) I know you said the you have converted r12 to r134a and the work fine. I converted the Comanche to 134a last year and it does work but not to well above 100 degrees. Jeep changed to a SD9 compressor which has 2 more cylinders than the SD7. My thought is to get a compressor and a SD9 mount probably hoses (maybe condenser also) to make the conversion. What I have not been able to find out is the hose fitting service fitting sizes. My question is what would I need since here in the southwest hot days over a 110 is not uncommon. The ex left with 15 years ago with the 96 which had 134a and workes really good. Thanks Dex your videos do teach old Dogs new tricks.

If your going to drill it try finding a chisel that's same ish width as the bolt diameter punch it with flat chisel 3 times in a circular pattern across the diameter were they intersect is the exact center center punch it there and drill personally I would start with welding a nut on it see if it will come out if that fails drill it one or two drill sizes smaller than the recommended drill size for the tap for the original hole say it's 3/8 16 that's 5/16 drill bit well drill it 17/64 then using picks and tiny chisels see if you pull what's left of the thread if u get it started usually get needle nose vise grips on it and work it out if all that fails drill it oversized for a thread insert

Hey Dex, is it possible to bypass this pulley altogether if you're running electric fans?
@freeidaho-videosАй бұрын
I like your videos and your matter-of-fact style. But with some penetrating oil, and heat, and a vise grip, the original broken bolts will come out. Might not even need the heat. When a bolt breaks off above the surface of the part it is big huge gift.

I had one broke off and tried to weld a nut on and I could never get the bolt out. I went full maniac and cut out the bolt then tried to tig weld back the boss. What a nightmare, it was the cheapest worst junk aluminum to weld. Ended up using some all thread after globbing on 10 pounds of filler.
