Same here! My only grand parent was my Grammy. She taught me how to sew without a pattern and garden, even refinish furniture the summer I stayed with her as I was turning twelve that summer. All has come in handy and I’m going to be 67 in two days. At 18, I sewed my twin girls all their clothes without patterns, thanks to my Grammy. ❤

That looks so comfortable and what a great idea using gift wrap paper to create a pattern. I especially like the contrast piece, the stripes in opposite direction, at the neckline and sleeves. Those weights certainly speed up the cutting out process, without endless pinning! It looks lovely on you, blue is your colour!

Beautiful dresses. I don’t sew anymore but 35 years ago out of necessity I sewed t-shirts, pants, shorts and skirts for our two little girls from free knit fabric my mom gave me and I used clothing pieces that fit them to cut out my fabric pieces. I just needed to buy elastic and matching thread. And the most amazing thing was the clothes fit them and saved money we could not afford to spend at the time. That time in our lives was sometimes difficult but I look back on it fondly because we made do with what we had. Gifts were hand made too. All good memories.

This is THE BEST tutorial I’ve watched on this subject. Thank you for sharing. One of the things that makes it great is the combination between soft music and your spoken instructions. If the music is raucous or repetitive I want to turn the sound off. Usually this means I have to go back and forth so I can hear the instructions. Fading the music out while you’re speaking allows me to hear all of your words. As far as the actual instructions go, wow! They are simple yet complete. I think that anyone who has sewn anything could follow this tutorial, even a beginner.

I can't sew, but own 2 sewing machines (one is my mom's old machine, and one I bought in my 20s and never used; I'm 60 now). This is an awesome idea and I could even see me me hand stitching something like this just to sit around in during the summer. My mom used to do stuff like this, she and my grandmother with no pattern or using brown paper to make the pattern. You've brought back great memories and I think it's time to maybe pull at least one of those machines out and get started sewing. Love the dresses; especially the striped one.

I love it! I remember watching my grandma make a smocked dress this way (paperless) for my baby cousin back in the 60s and was amazed. I wish and way back when they still had home-ec that they had taught sewing a garment like this. Having a myriad of tissue paper pieces never made sense to me. But if we could've started likes you did, it would have clicked. Everyone learns differently 😁 so I give myself grace. I'm saving this for when I feel brave enough to try again 🫶🏼 God bless you as you have blessed us 🤍🕊️
