I bought it because I heard that this device provides electric power like the roof lights, and it is useful for parking mode on dashcams. Even if the engine is off, the roof lights still have power, so they can stay on

I don't think that is true. The power will go out because the roof lights will also turn off at some point. Once the car turns off the roof lights, the dash cam will also turn off. On some vehicles, the power that goes to the rain sensor module or rearview mirror will stay on for a preset amount of time. Then power is cut and the dash cam turns off. For example, in the vehicle I tested the FitDVR on, the VIOFO dash cam stays on even after turning the vehicle off and taking the keys out. After a few minutes it powers down. If it doesn't do this, then the battery would eventually be drained from the cars own systems.

the fit dvr looks to be serving as a power hub tapped into a car's rain sensor module. however it does appear bulky or clunky from where it is being placed. a smaller, inline cable would make sense with some sort of splitter for the various devices you want to connect to it. but in the long run, it is not for many who need parking mode or other recording when the vehicle is off. this leads people to end up using a dash cam battery, preferably lifepo4 (lithium ion phosphate), which are expensive but lets you charge it when the car is running.

Yes, the FitDVR is a power hub as you mentioned. It is a bit bulky but not that bad considering it has the LCD readout. I suppose if you don't need a readout or want something smaller, a inline cable may suffice. Not sure if anyone makes one with 12V and 5V outputs, though I have seen ones with USB. I guess if you only need one, then getting the appropriate 12V or 5V cable would be good enough. People will always have to get what suits their situation the best. If people want parking mode, you don't necessarily need a dash cam battery. They could also hardwire their dash cam to their vehicles too. The car battery can run a dash cam and the hardwire kit will protect the battery from full discharge. If longer parking mode recording function is required, only then consider the dash cam battery.

I tried installing it and connected the cables, but that screen on the FitDVR does not turn on. Do you know what the issue could be?

Yeah it didn’t, I tried plugging my radar detector into the fit dvr and that didn’t power on either

That is very strange. How long did you wait after the vehicle was turned on? Do you know if the sensor module you tapped into is still powered? If so then there could be a connectivity issue to the FitDVR. The FitDVR should turn on once the vehicle is on. I would check all the connections and make sure all connectors are pushed in all the way. Did you select a FitDVR that supports your vehicle? If that still doesn't work, I would try contacting FitDVR support. I'm wondering if you may have a defective unit.

@@FrakkingCreationsYes it’s compatible with the vehicle. Made sure all the connectors were plugged in and it still didn’t power on. Do you happen to know any alternative brands to FitDVR?

Also, make sure the round connector to the FitDVR clicks when inserted. I've heard of Dongar but haven't used them before. They do not have the fancy LCD screen to show the voltages. Just a simple cable.

If your dash cam does not use more than 5V, 3A then based on the specifications of the FitDVR, it should work. Where did you get info on your dash cam needing 5V @ 3A? EDIT: I do find it strange that your dash cam uses that much. Most don't use that much. What brand and model do you have?

I tried installing this on my BMW i4 to power my 3-channel dashcam, however it only held power for 20mins then the dash cam turns off. I had to unplug and plug the usb C to get the power back. Also, if I use the car’s 12V outlet as the power source I encounter such no problems. Do you have any idea why this is happening?

Aside from checking with FitDVR support, here are some questions I have and points to consider: 1) Does the FitDVR turn off after 20 minutes too or is it only the dash cam? 2) Is it always 20 minutes that the dash cam turns off or it's random? 3) What brand and model dash cam are you using? 4) Are you using the supplied USB cable or your own? If using your own you have to make sure it is a Power only cable and not a data cable. I found that for one of my dash cams, when I used a data cable it powered up the dash cam but the dash cam went into data mode like when connected to a computer. If this was the case, maybe it went into sleep mode after 20 minutes. 5) You might have a defective FitDVR. Maybe FitDVR support has reports of the issue you are experiencing so contacting them about it could help resolve your issue faster.

Thanks for replying. 1) FitDVR stays on, only the dash cam turns off and on. 2) I noticed when I start driving the dash cam stays on for like 20-25mins, then turns off by itself. I have to unplug the USB C connector to activate it again, but sometimes it turns back on and off again. 3) I have the WOLFBOX i07 3-channel dash cam 4) Yes I used the cable connector (USB to USB-C that came with the FitDVR. 5) I actually returned the first FitDVR and received a new one. Still doing the same thing. But when I plug the dashcam straight to the 12V outlet it stays on the entire time.

The only other things I can think of at this time are: 1) is the dash cam drawing too much from the FitDVR? What is the current usage? 2) Is the FitDVR overheating? Did you install it on the windshield where it gets direct sunlight? If it overheats, maybe it cuts out.
